Sharia Watch: Facebook = haram!

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 22, 2009 03:03 PM

Indonesian Muslim clerics frown on social networking. Using YouTube for jihad recruitment: Good. Using Facebook and Friendster to chat with friends: Bad!

Indonesian Islamic clerics warned Muslims on Friday not to use popular Internet networking sites like Facebook for flirting or gossiping.

A non-binding resolution issued after a meeting of hundreds of Islamic scholars from Java and Bali islands warns that using sites like Facebook can lead to pornography and “obscenity.”

“We forbid the use of Facebook, Friendster and other social networking sites unless they are being used to foster Islamic teaching,” a spokesman for the clerics, Abdul Muid Shohib, said.

“So spreading ill words about others, gossiping and other things that go against religious teaching on social networking sites in the virtual world are forbidden according to Islamic law.”

Facebook is hugely popular in the world’s most populous Muslim country, and while rulings from Islamic clerics are influential they are rarely followed to the letter.

Indonesia ranks fifth behind the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy and France in terms of Facebook use, according to Internet tracking website Alexa.com.

    No, but I admit it does make them seem a bit controlling. However, they are not nearly as controlling as the Global Warming fascists on the Left (like lgm) who want to regulate and control every aspect of our lives outside of the bedroom and even the very air we breathe.

    For the most part, these Islamic clerics control illiterate and “ignorant of the world” people, which makes it easier for them to seek and gain power. When these people are raised from birth to hate, they go along with whatever the clerics want. Reminds me of some liberals. Curiosity usually wins out in the end, and kids will be kids…regardless of what part of the world they come from. What is happening in Islam is what happened in Christianity a thousand years ago; church of power hungry priests, versus king/queen domination.

    It does if they behead anyone that doesn’t convert to Islam. It does if they stone women to death for being raped. It does if they blow up pizza parlors full of Jewish children. Hope that clears it up for ya.

    Sorry LGM, but that’s not exactly a winning analogy: My chem-anatomy prof and his RN wife lived on campus w/ their four kids and never even owned a television set (they were Christians from the upper Mid-West and did not like the stupefying influence of TV on kids) and not only did all four of their kids receive their baccalaureate degrees years early, they each graduated medical school at the top of their respective classes and are today very successful physicians.

    If by “controlling” you mean good, responsible parents, then yes.

    Because today far too many parents don’t set parameters and boundaries for their children. Everything is yes, yes, yes (lest we harm their “self-esteem”) and most parents are more interested in being friends than raising responsible, productive citizens.

    Of course, the disconnect for lgm comes in not being able to tell the difference between Orthodox Jewish parents who set parameters for upbringing within their own homes and the millions of Muslims who are going to wage jihad on a public scale against their non-Muslim neighbors and subjugate them to shari’a law. I don’t fear the Torah as much as we should fear the Koran.

    But, then again, I’m able to distinguish between Abrahamic religions. Liberals are intellectually incapable of doing so.

    Once again slowly for those who barely can read the lines, let alone what’s between them: MM has her little hissyfits over such tiny issues that sometimes you catch her screeching about something she would defend if good Judeo-Christians did it. Whoa. Way to backpedal, lgm. That’s not what you said previously and that’s not what the Islamic clerics meant. In fact, you knocked Orthodox Jewish parents as Islamofacists for doing what parents are supposed to be doing. So nice try, but you’re true intentions were revealed in your first post.

    This isn’t about parents making those decisions – this is about clerics and, eventually, Islamic theocracies, limiting basic access to the Internet – something they would do here and anywhere else PC liberals like you continue to draw specious equations between Islam (an inherently violent religion) and Christianity/Judaism (non-violent religions). In Saudi Arabia, Valentine’s gifts are verboten and special “morality” police crack down on inappropriate behavior in public – two small things that would never happen in modern-day America with its Judeo-Christian heritage and Christian identity (contrary to what Barack Obama says).

    But if I recall correctly, you’re also a big fan of Harold Koh’s nomination. So I say, in the interest of fairness, we let the international law of Islamic nations dictate our Internet and television usage, as well as American laws on gay marriage and abortion. Seeing as you can’t tell the difference between what Islamic states are doing and what responsible parents do – of their own free will – in their own homes.

    To finish from yesterday, before an important fax came off, the couple of whom I was speaking forbid television in their homes not solely out of a healthy concern to eliminate its often negative influences on children, but because they wanted their kids to develop an affinity for learning and reading.

    What’s being done in Indonesian is completely different and totally offensive: they are denying their children access to the non-Muslim world, via F/B & the I-net, in order to further inculcate their children in Sharia Law, filling them with unchallenged prejudices and misconceptions that instill life-long distrust and resentment of Judeo-Christians and Western democracy.

    It’s instilling hate and by eliminating access to the outside world, there’s little chance of it being counteracted.

    Once again slowly for those who barely can read the lines, let alone what’s between them:

    Excuse me? I fail to see where anyone replying on this thread mistook the article’s point in the least.

    You know, as reading instruction is a major component of my certification in K-12 special ed, allow me to offer you some research backed tips on improving reading comprehension:
    1.) as you read, imagine the text as spoken dialog, assigning the words to a speaker(s);
    2.) close your eyes and visualize the action of the more confusing elements of text you just read, and explain its meaning to a neighbor;
    3.) use meta-cognitive techniques like Post-Its to make yourself aware of confusing text elements, such new terms or concepts, and have a dictionary nearby or ask a knowledgeable neighbor explain it to you;
    4.) ask an adult or neighbor to read confusing text elements aloud to you, then explain to him or her what you believe the text means;
    5.) for more assistance, see the PBS Website “Reading Rockets” for a bounty of comprehension tips and advice.

    “…good Judeo-Christians did it.”

    It’s not Christian bashing per se, but the condescending manner in which you refer to Judeo-Christians as “good” does seem to hint at mockery that comes close to being offensive.

    This is one of those times. Regulating your kids’ access to the internet is not Islomafascism, it’s common sense.
