Supermax: No, we’re not ready, President Obama
President Obama left the impression yesterday that Supermax prisons are ready, willing, and able to house Gitmo detainees.
Supermax officials in Colorado say otherwise:
Moving any large number of terror detainees from Guantanamo Bay to Colorado’s Supermax would require either shuffling current residents out of the Florence prison or expanding its capacity and resolving a long-running battle over adequate prison staffing.
As President Barack Obama and congressional leaders point toward the Colorado federal prison as a possible new home for some of the detainees, one big problem is the bed-space crunch.
Supermax’s approximately 480 concrete cells already are jammed with the likes of Oklahoma City bombing co-conspirator Terry Nichols, Atlanta Olympics bomber Eric Rudolph and other notorious domestic criminals. There also are 33 international terrorists, including Sept. 11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui, 1993 World Trade Center bombing mastermind Ramzi Yousef and failed airline shoe bomber Richard Reid.
Only one bed was not filled Thursday at Supermax, U.S. Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Tracy Billingsley said.
So getting any more than a handful of detainees from Guantanamo to Florence would require considerable logistical maneuvers to clear room or an even longer-term solution through prison expansion.
The first step, according to the head of the union representing correctional officers, would be to increase staffing at Supermax.
“There’s a whole contingent of issues that have to be well thought out before we ever agreed to bring inmates of that caliber into our system,” said Bryan Lowry, president of the National Council of Prison Locals, which represents federal correctional officers.
Not to mention that jihadi virus problem.

The Chosen One never lets the facts get in the way of his ideas!
I still like the idea of sending the fanatics to live with Jugears in the White House. There are already guards, and besides, Obama’s mother-in-law could set them straight in no time. He wants them here? Let him live with them. Idiot.
Oh but I am sure there are other super max prisons who would be delighted to have these lovely individuals. sarc/
How long does Obama think it will be before the ACLU files a suit claiming cruel and unusual punishment due to overcorwding?
Obama is just about at the point in his job when he typically starts campaignng for higher office. I bet he dreams of the days when he could unleash his rhetorical flourishes on the nation without having to think through the consequences or actually implement policies that will protect our country. I get the feeling that he really stepped in it when he promised to close Gitmo. Yesterdays domestic jail grown terrorists are going to put a damper on the idea of housing the terrorists in US jails.
Now everybody repeat after me: “Let Sheik Mohammed go, or we blow up another school bus!”
Hasn’t it occured to Chauncey that the issue isn’t with finding someplace secure enough, or releasing “safe people?”
The issue is, and I’ll type this slowly so that liberals can follow along:
HAVING POLITICAL PRISONERS WITH EXTREMELY DANGEROUS “ASSOCIATES” IN A KNOWN POSITION SURROUNDED BY US CITIZENS IS INSANE.
What a complete and total fool this man is. An imbecile.
Nobody cares how these scum are treated. Nobody cares whether they get good food or not.
But we *do* care about not having a hostage situation outside of (insert your favorite prison here) involving our loved ones.
*cough*
The Titanic didn’t sink as fast as most of Odopey’s ideas. I truly believe a Freshman in High School could do a better job.
Yet again, another well thought out plan.
It’s too bad we have a president who is stuck in a perpetual state of campaign mode.
Has anyone asked our gitmo guest if they want to move to a max prison? If it were me I would vote to stay on the island over a cold, concrete prison in the US.
“Do you want a terrorist in your state?” Republicans continue to look for points by appealing to the worst instincts of Americans. In this case, the NIMBY (not in my back yard) fears of bad guys in the same state. These people do not have super-powers. They are not going to escape a normal prison.
This problem of Obama’s own making will be as difficult and contentious an issue as where to store nuclear waste. Come to think about it some of those old arguments would work again. These guys are radioactive and nobody wants them in their state, district, or territory.
You know where there’s plenty of beds available for the detainees to use?
Gitmo.
Now if it were just TEH ONE and MichelleO, maybe. But it won’t be good for Michelle’s kids : )
No terrorist here…any where within our borders to spread radical islam and jihadism within the USA.
Worse than a virus – it’s a plague.
Drug cartels pulled off a pretty daring jailbreak in Mexico 50 something escaped. can it happen here? maybe.
But thats not the issue, converting other prisoners even if the are seperated will happen, period.
Face it lgm, Odopey hasn’t a clue, go drink some more Kook-aid and take you place back at the end of the line in the Cult of Obama. shoo!
Um, Barry….being President doesn’t mean that voicing your wishes will make them come true, so stop making promises that others have to keep. And when you get mad at those who aren’t able to keep your promises, stay away from the Gulag approach. It’ll give you a bad (or worse) name.
OK, YOU take them.
Even for a Statist slave, this is a stupid remark. Self-preservation is NOT one of our “worst instincts”, though Statists…who fundamentally HATE our nation and its people…see it otherwise.
Really? What are you using for proof?
They certainly don’t have super-powers, just the normal set of intelligence, incentive, and implacable hatred for our culture that we have seen EVIDENCED time and again.
Are they more likely to escape or infect a prison population in Super Max or GITMO? Even you are not so stupid that you don’t know the answer to that question.
Am I missing something? One bed = more staffing…but again, I’m no expert on correction facility overcrowding solutions.
Two things. First, I am glad to see that you finally admit that the left feels that National Security is “the worst instincts of Americans” and secondly, it was not just Republicans that voted down the funding to close Gitmo.
I still think one of the more remote Alleutian Islands would be a good place.
Of course it could. Prison guards and personel can be bribed.
Hmmm, out here in KaliforniaSSR, Governator Ahnold needs money fast. Could make a deal with the drug cartel for a buy back of some of those 40,000 (some of whom probably have ties to the cartels) he claims he’ll have to release due to budget mismanagement, for a negotiated settlement : )
I was thinking about the Artic ice caps. We could send them there and let them monitor the so-called global warming problem.
Elected Dimocrats see this as a radioactive issue.
They are right, and their interest (their “worst instincts”) in keeping their asps in their seats will over-ride BIG BRO’s self-righteous BS.
Nah, they’d be a blight on the environment. Maybe we could encourage Fwance to reactivate Devil’s Island.
If BIG BRO had a brain…instead of a hyper-inflated ego…he would have backed off his drive to close GITMO, blamed the Congress, and moved on.
That he has not shows that he is dancing to the Soros grind organ.
Short ropes and long drops would solve the problem quickly.
So Duh One spouted out some feel-good statement before thinking it through. I think my 6 year old autistic son has better sense.
But, oh well, lets see what kind of solutions we have. Drop to prisoners off on an unused oil drilling platform. Have a couple of armed helicopters and gun boats patrol around it. Maybe fly over a couple times a week and drop them some ham sandwiches.
Or take an old, unused ship and anchor it a few miles off shore. Disable the engine, and have helicopters and boats patrol around it.
Do I need to do ALL of your thinking, BO!?!?
On cue, LGM supports anything Obama says by posting:
But they do have followers already living in or w/ access to this country. And once they able to reach proximity with their imprisoned detainee compatriots, whose to say what sort of actions or protests these people may take out on the people who live and raise their families in the communities where these prisons are located. The idea of bringing these terrorists on our shores is unsettling to say the least.
As long as they have empathetic followers on the outside, they do not need to escape.
Let’s say we house these guys in a Supermax awaiting trial or tribunal. What do we do with any of them that are acquitted?
Yes, you’re missing something:
‘Nuff said?
Oh, and they aren’t going to fly airplanes filled with passengers into icons of American economic and military power, paralyze the nation for weeks, and change Americans’ life-style forever…
that’s just silly…
I mean, who can believe that.
It’s a shame the drugs Obama did/does destroyed his brain, I’m surprised he can still read.
Ragspierre said (#18):
No, its irrational fear of very unlikely events. You’re more likely to be killed by a meteor than by some loser possible terrorist wannabe incarcerated in a high security prison in your state.
What will happen if these terrorist are brought to the main land US? The lawyers and the ACLU would have a field day. You think the country is broke now, wait until they start suing us. Must be another Obama campaign pay off.
and lgm still misses the point, like a meteor whizzing ten feet over his head, him blind to it all.
AND HE SUPPOSEDLY HAS STUDENTS? AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHH,
May God help them.
As a general rule, prison guards are stretched too thin, poorly paid, do awful work with awful people, on the low end of the intelligence scale, and prone to corruption themselves.
Additionally, Federal guards have NO security that comes close to that of the GITMO military personnel. They have families nearby, they are just people in the community, and they have NO way of maintaining anonymity.
I listened to a Super Max guard yesterday, who spoke of the legal requirement that even vicious drug cartel members were allowed to gather, caucus, and conduct business. They are PROVIDED laptops and email accounts to “assist in their defense”.
This is an idiot proposal, and it needs to be STOPPED.
Of course the ACLU would sue and people like LGM will back them. After all LGM has already claimed the FBI used entrapment to “persuade” these guys to try Jihad.
Ahh. Yes, well there ya go. One Bed = More Staff. That’s a thinking man’s solution.
A stupid, unsupported…and unsupportable…naked assertion.
I’m not worried about a “terrorist wannabe” who IS incarcerated. I’m concerned about MAINSTREAMING KNOWN TERRORISTS into a penal system.
IF you had a brain in your head…and any love of your country…you would be as well.
But…
LGM, your side is missing the issue: It’s not so much that the detainees may escape, it’s that they will spread their messages of hate throughout the prison system, making it impossible for the guards to maintain constant control, and that freed Islamic converts may decide to stage retaliatory strikes against the civilian populations where these federal prisons are located.
At least on Gitmo there was little chance of the detainees gaining converts/adherents and making contact with outside compatriots legally living in and moving about the US mainland.
There is NO legal mandate to do what BIG BRO wants to do.
There is NO historical precedent for what BIG BRO wants to do.
PERIOD.
Would we have DREAMED of mainstreaming dedicated Nazis into our prison population during WWII? Hell NO!
How about doctrinaire Chinese Communists during the Korean War?
I believe it may even be against the Geneva Conventions…
Depends on the jurisdiction. Based only on my own experience, you’re full of ..it.
We both live in Texas. I know what I’m talking about.
What experience do you have?
That’s why I said it depends on jurisdiction. I happen to have two in my family in another state, dork.
Good job Barack. Why lead when you can just pander to The Lunatic Left.
LGM, have you sent a thank you note yet to President Bush and VP Cheney for nailing those four NYC terrorists that targeted your place of worship?
God Bless Dick Cheney!
OK, are you telling me that what I said generally applies DOES NOT apply because you have better, smarter relatives that are the exceptions?
Come on…
prison guards are stretched too thin T or F
poorly paid T or F
do awful work with awful people T or F
AS A GENERAL RULE on the low end of the intelligence scale T or F
prone to corruption themselves T or F
I have a brother who has been an MP, prison guard, and cop.
I have had clients, relatives of clients, and people with whom I have worked who were incarcerated in both Texas and Federal pens.
I could make the same kind of sweeping generalization about lawyers – generally of rather average or less intelligence, sleeping through college on a lib arts major and pot, far more prone to corruption than the average American and therefore prone to enter politics, and worst, of the opinion that they’re smarter than anybody else. But I don’t, because as with all sweeping generalities, it’s full of crap. I know that prisons in Texas are similar to what you describe, and also that at least some of them are operated by private contractors with relatively low standards. That doesn’t apply everywhere. You tried to slip through a slur that you expected everybody to agree with and got called out. Leave it at that. We agree on virtually everything else.
No slur intended. At all. I don’t know your people. I apologize for seeming to assail them.
My brother, BTW, was not a guard in Texas, but a Rocky Mountain state. My experience of both state and federal prisons is consistent.
The larger point was that we have the GITMO detainees under guard by people who are picked for that duty, and protected by the military in doing it.
The people guarding the TERRORISTS at GITMO are NOT the same caliber of personnel as are your…even Super Max…typical prison guards.
Those prison administrators sound like they are as smart as you people.
Can’t figure basic logistics out.
How come we were able to keep all previous terror suspects in prison (those world trade idiots, Tim McVeigh, etc) but now you people are afraid?
The larger points, one of which doesn’t seem to get much exposure, are that (1) they aren’t in a position to aid in recruiting American citizens as they would be onshore, and (2) they can be plausibly considered not to have access to the rights of an American citizen (or resident alien), such as habeas corpus, etc., which will more than likely accrue to them the moment they set foot on mainland US soil. I simply don’t believe that Obama and his minions haven’t taken that into account. And I don’t see where they would have any alternative to releasing them within the US if they were unable to give them “fair” trials and no other country would take them. But then I’m not a lawyer.
So, we know that the following does NOT apply to you: rather average or less intelligence, sleeping through college on a lib arts major and pot, far more prone to corruption than the average American and therefore prone to enter politics, and worst, of the opinion that they’re smarter than anybody else.
You are not a lawyer, but your insights are correct. Congratulations on both.
I could have phrased that better. What I meant was, I don’t know if there are other means or grounds to hold them.
Aren’t we in danger here of letting the left frame the argument once again and then we debate not only the wrong issue but because of the framing, we have lost the argument from the beginning?
Is the argument about these detainees OR is the argument better framed IF we move it to how Obama is more concerned to payback his supporters than he is with OUR security?
Isn’t that part of what Cheney got to yesterday? The “frame the issue correctly BEFORE we argue the issue” speech?
You’re more like to die from a coconut falling on your head that being struck by lightning. Why don’t you come down here to South Florida and hold a golf club in the air during a thunderstorm?
txvet2;
No, I was wondering if you were a disgruntled former client…!!!
txvet2’s instincts…along with a lot of others here…are right on point.
By bringing these TERRORISTS on to US soil, we literally would open a Pandora’s Box of consequences…intended or not.
GITMO, as this plays out, will be seen as a really good decision, weighing all the factors.
Closing it will, as I said, be a radioactive issue that can only hurt BIG BRO.
OK Trolls, here is the real issue. It isn’t about being “scared” of what these Prisoners of War may do. It is about not bringing a Prisoner of War on to US Soil so they may be afforded rights only due those of us on US Soil. One of these guys asks for asylum and a Carter appointee judge may very well release him. If this happens, I want to make sure the former Prisoner of War arrives at your next barbeque and teaches at your kid’s school. However, I am certain that, being mindless DemoCommies, you only eat tofu – must be tough to keep on the grill.
Prisoners of War get released when the war is over. When Al Quaeda sues for peace, lays down arms and chooses to engage the west via diplomacy, then we can discuss a prisoner release. Otherwise, by international law and our own magnanimity, we keep them in conditions much more favorable than the basics required by the Geneva Convention.
Ole Blue Lips is having trouble keeping up his deal with the far left because of the constant hypocracy of the same people who control him. You Dems screwed up big time when you let this guy get nominated over Hillary. She may be a screeching Liberal but at least she isn’t completely controlled by a group of ultra-left wing screaming Commies. She would have controlled them. That’s why the DNC cut her out. Good for you. You bought a marionette.
Missed you the last few days CiE…
Yep, had my knee checked out by a real doctor. Looks like a little arthroscopic nip and tuck for me this summer.
She’s an Alinsky acolyte, just as Obama is. The screeching might be a little harder on the ear, but there isn’t a dime’s worth of difference between them on anything that matters, although I have to admit that she would probably have been a little slower in trying to nationalize everything, if only for political reasons.
Did you miss the part about Supermax being FULL? Simple logistics, my a$$. Fear has nothing to do with it. Try a running cost/benefit and risk analyses on the idea. It’s stupid. It’s expensive. It gives sympathizers a target-rich environment. I don’t want to see some guard’s wife being decapitated on television.
If you truly loved your country, you’d pull your head out of your fourth point of contact.
Hope is not a plan; not all change is good. WE are the civilian national security force! They might have to change the name to STUPIDMAX. The resistance is here; the resistance is now. RESIST!!!!!!!!
ECS
That’s the way I see it too. She would have been the lesser of two evils but – I have to admit – it is fun watching Blue Lips try and get Pelosi off his back. I’m pretty sure she had her name tattooed somewhere on him. Really don’t want to speculate further on that – just had dinner.
Speaking of the prison being full – I was, at one time, in a management position over a group of detention facilities. One of the top things you just can’t do in a Federal Prison is overcrowd it. Once you are out of beds, that’s it. Done. No temporary beds allowed either.
The prisoner can sue you to the end of the Earth for putting them in an overcrowding situation and, as you aren’t supposed to do it, you aren’t protected from civil claims by “color of law” and the lawsuit hits you personally.
So, with only one bed open, they can/will only take 1 prisoner. No ifs ands or buts. Only building new facilities will take the burden and the Senate chose not to spend that money. So, for the short term, the case is closed.
Blue Lips can keep his word to his Commie owners by closing Gitmo and sending the Prisoners of War to another foreign facility say.. Diego Garcia or Johnson Island. There, keep them under the same rules and await Al Qaida’s capitualtion. Maybe he can rename Guantanamo to “Liberal Man Made Disaster Haven”. Doesn’t have the same ring..
Or steal Rush’s idea and rename it Club Gitmo, and market it as a resort. For sure they’re living better there than they were in the war zones.
I was there in the ’90’s when the Democrats used it as a camp for Haitian refugees that they didn’t want landing in the USA. It was a dump – from the pictures I have seen, it has really been upgraded.
I guess to Liberals, poor Haitians looking for a better life deserve less than terrorists who want to destroy our entire way of life.
How about Club Mecca…?
They don’t have the spice of being at war with our culture. Jihadiis are SO much cooler…
Oh, and did you mention… They’re black.
Ragspierre said (#40):
Good.
What’s the difference? They’re in jail. They don’t have superpowers.
Recent deaths by meteor in USA: ZERO.
Recent deaths of prison guards (just to name a few):
Columbus Ohio April 29, 2009
Tennessee March 10,2009
Chino, Ca. Jan 10, 2005
Baltimore Feb 29, 2008
Atwater, Ca. May 22, 2009.
and the list goes on and on.
They have friends, supporters and sympathizers on the outside who want them out. Who’s to say what they’ll do, once the detainees are brought into the country.
Apparently, THE ONE’s “false choice” will be taken from him by his own Dimocrat buds…
Yes, you’ve said that. Repeatedly.
I wasn’t bright the first time.
What they WILL have if brought here is a VASTLY greater power to do evil here…
against this nation…
that you so obviously hate.
Question for lgm…
is GITMO just another jail?
I wonder how many letters made it out of GITMO…???
But THE ONE says we will be safer with the KNOWN TERRORISTS on our soil, in our penal system.
When were German or Japanese POWs housed in the penal system during WWII again…?
One last time. In summary:
1) These are not criminals. They are irregular enemy combatants who, under the Geneva Convention, could be executed out of hand.
2) We don’t want them in the country, because people like you would want to extend them full citizen’s rights the moment their toes touched ground, which leads to:
3) We aren’t afraid of them breaking out of prison. We’re afraid you idiots will decide you can’t try them or deport them and put them on the street.
4) We don’t want them in our prisons in any event, because we already have enough Muslim/terrorist recruiters there now. At Gitmo, they can only recruit each other, which is an exercise in futility even for a fanatic.
I say, let’s release them from Gitmo…Kick ‘em out of their cells and point toward the beach. 10 minutes to leave or, we start shooting. The simple ideas are often the best ones.
After all, when you leave jail, you don’t get transportation home…
What the hay, just give em NFL uniforms and a 16 game schedule vs the afc central division. Better let them play the cowboys so they might have a chance in one game w/o being taken off the field in body bags.
“
Most thinking people look before they leap. But the Left never thinks things out. They only consider “intentions” when making decisions; they don’t care about results. This spares them the inevitable brain-freeze they would get by trying to think things out ahead of time.
Joe Biden compared the closing of Gitmo to “opening Pandora’s Box.” When biden said, “We don’t know what’s inside the box,” he was admitting that Obama’s decision to close Gitmo was not “well thought out” and there is no plan in place. For once Biden said something I agree with 100%.
They could save a ton of money AND keep us safe by “fixing” Gitmo to their liking. They could change the name of the prison like they did at Abu Ghraib, invite the world to come see, and soon all would be forgotten. The name “Hotel California” might be a fitting name. They would probably even have boat people showing up asking for asylum.
But that would not be enough for Obama. He’s the new Pharaoh in town, and all monuments build by Bush must be torn down and erased from history. That’s the real reason for closing Gitmo – to build Obama’s legacy. Never mind any unintended consequences that might pop up along the way.
I guess you didn’t hear Obama. Most of these terrorists will be given lawyers and trials. Unless they plan to build Federal Court Houses inside prisons, these inmates will get to travel back and forth between prison and town all during the trial and many appeals. No one has ever escaped from a courtroom, right?
As I said in a previous post, the Left never thinks things out.
BO will make us buy Alcatraz from Ahnie.
I like the Alcatraz idea; right with Nancy Pelosi. But as long as congressmen know that re-elections are coming, they won’t support any move to anywhere in their own states, or anywhere nearby, for that matter. How about buying Pitcairn Island? No other land around for hundreds of miles and easily guarded…offshore.
lol, Gray, why! why! why! move them at all? the reasons Odopey has been spewing are L.A.M.E. but, hey consider the source, his Puppet masters.
I’m good with closing Gitmo. Just lock all of the doors and deploy our troops elsewhere. Without the care of our military, they would starve to death in a few weeks. I know this sounds inhumane, but it is one of the two methods of execution deemed acceptable by the left. They were cheering when Terry Schiavo slowly starved to death. The other method would be through having the brain sucked out.
I have an idea:
Any nonuniformed combatants captured in the battlefield get summarily executed. That would be pretty much all of them at Gitmo.
Bada bing, bada boom, Gitmo can be closed. The troops can go elsewhere. America can stop worrying about where to house these little b-tards. And most importantly: Al Gore will be happy that these wastes of flesh will no longer be using carbon which apparently causes global warming.
You’re welcome, President Obama. Please give me $800,000,000 for my brill idea.
The ONLY reason I can think of for allowing the 3 water-boardees alive is IF they are still expected to provide useful information.
Beyond that, they should be fed to the sharks off Cuba, who are used to eating people much better than these terrorists. It might be a deterrent to future shark attacks…
Odopey: “I will Close Gitmo!”
Odopey: “I need 80 million dollars”
Congress: “what for”????
Odopey: uh, er, um, hmmmmmm.
asking for 80 million bones and not have a plan? unreal.
I’m surprised he can dress himself.
Ditto!
That kind of describes what used to be known as the ‘Penalty Box’ in the Persian Gulf. Ships would get busted for smuggling (or other inconsistencies) and they would be made to anchor there. And then the crew would sit on the ships(dhows) into eternity.
The dhows were rust-buckets, and they could always get a new Bangledeshi crew at 3 cents an hour wages, so the owners didnt care about them or about saving the crew.
So guess who got to deliver food and medical supplies to those crews into eternity also?
