Lefty blogs punked by Mancow “torture” stunt(?); Updated

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 29, 2009 01:34 PM

Last week, liberal blogs went ga-ga over radio talk show host Mancow’s waterboarding stunt.

Matthew Yglesias wet his pants. He featured Mancow’s photo and the blaring headline: “Conservative Radio Host Has Himself Waterboard to Prove It’s Not Torture, Realizes He Was Wrong.”

MSNBC and HuffPo
embraced him. Ezra Klein at the Washington Post piled on. So did Jonathan Chait: “I think the torture debate would be mighty different if more of the conservatives who scoff at waterboarding would try the same thing.”

And Think Progress. And Andrew Sullivan.

And on and on and on.

Now, there’s a paper trail that suggests the glaringly obvious — that it was all an elaborate hoax, reportedly orchestrated with the help of Jerry Springer’s publicist.

Time for B.S. detector tune-ups, people. Next time, libs, don’t be so eager to hype a veteran radio entertainer crying “torture.”

You’re the ones who end up all wet.

***

Linda Shafran, publicist for Mancow and Springer among other celebs, e-mails the following statement:

BORED BLOGGERS ARE ALL WET
By Mancow Muller May 29, 2008

I am not a magician. Many news cameras were there!

Obviously, it was on the radio and I wasn’t in prison. I’m also not a radicalized Muslim terrorist. But it was not a hoax! I repeat: NOT A HOAX.

We kept telling management, the insurance companies, and the local Chicago cops we weren’t really going to do it – until we did. Otherwise, they weren’t gonna let us do it! We got a U.S. Marine that told us he had studied how to do it and he volunteered to waterboard me in return for a mention of his charity.

I was on a decline and I was waterboarded. Was I in chains? No. Does that make it less real? I am failing to get the point attempted by my detractors. We never claimed it was an exact recreation.

The CIA technique is exactly what we did:

1. Keep the chest elevated above the head and neck to keep the lungs “above the waterline.”
2. Incline the head, both to keep the throat open and to present the nostrils for easier filling.
3. Force the mouth open so that water can be poured into both the nose and mouth.
Sorry, I thought for years it wasn’t torture and now I do. The video is there for all to see.

The left has taken my message and distorted it as well. Would I wanterboard to save my daughters (or any American children)? Yes!

The three terrorists that were waterboarded at Guantanamo were done so by military professionals. And it was done to save lives with America’s best interests at heart. Mine was a silly radio time filler in comparison. Its apples & hand grenades!

It would be insane to equate what I did with anything that happens in prison. I am simply a free man in a radio studio that always tries to get inside the big issues. This is an ugly issue with no easy answers. But I now see it’s easier for some to dismiss me than to do any real soul searching on this very heady issue.

    Stupid paragraph.

You probably don’t think that a life prison sentence is torture, but you would probably admit to being the Queen of England in order to get released.

What exactly is stupid about the paragraph? Please, deconstruct it and explain in detail? Fine. I know. It is easier to hurl epiteths than to explain your position. Typical liberal tactics.

If you want to know what I think, please ask me and I’ll tell you. You don’t have to speculate.

And, just to reaffirm my position, if waterboarded, I would admit to being the Queen of England to get it to stop. Yes, I would lie to stop it.

Would you lie, to stop being waterboarded? Are you the person we all trust to under go waterboarding, and then say it is nothing more than uncomfortable? Mancow called it torture. What will you call it? And, when you do, be specific, describe your feelings and thoughts.

The question, of course, is why do you think your definition of torture has any relevance?

Because, I was asked if specific activities were torture, or not. I suggested that I simply be asked what my definition of torture was so that the number of questions be minimized.

I still have yet to be asked what my definition of torture is, so it certainly has no relevance to others, because they do not want to know. They would rather make assumptions.

Certainly it doesn’t agree with the legal definition, and therefore is of no consequence (except to you, of course).

Corkie, can you imagine if Bush had come out and said that he decided to end torture (EIT) in an exec order, but left the decision that if it needed to be used later he could and it was only completely up to him?

I read the Huff&Puff site on the Mancow thing. The headline was Conservative Radio host admits waterboarding is torture. There were over 1,000 comments all from lefties who were praising Mancow for becoming enlightened and saying Cheney and Hannity were next. I got a good chuckle when I looked Mancow up, a DJ who does a show like a morning drive. The left will mislead every chance they get. Fox news now more than doubles all the other media combined. Hopefully Americans are waking up to the lies and misrepresentations they are fed daily. I pray now that Americans will all stand up and say, no more propaganda, enough!!

No, I would guess that more than likely you consider yourself a “moderate”.

    Nope.

And, this is a clear example of being in-direct. Why guess, when you can ask? It is passive aggressive.

I will grant you this, I only said what I am not, and could have said, what I was. Though, I was responding to an assertion, or suggestion.

I am sure it is important for some people to know whether another person is left, right, or moderate. I prefer to be called consistent. When I post it is to more fully understand and appreciate the consistentcy, or inconsistentcy of what is being said.

Go back and re-read my original post on this thread. I seek to more fully understand whether there is ‘punking’ or ‘hoaxing’ going on. I offered a suggestion to resolve the question. The suggestion is neither left, right, or moderate. It is a question that seeks the truth. It is a question that looks to provide and deliver . . . consistentcy.

Would another person feel the same way Mancow did? Get a volunteer. Someone we trust. From there I was taken to task, by tangents, alternate theories, off hand comments, and perjoratives.

I do my best to respectfully address as many comments that I can, and I do it it consistently. There are those that just want to attack and avoid my original post. Infer, assume and take things out of context.

When I agree with someone, I say so, even if it is the smallest of items. Go ahead and look through this thread and note how many times anyone has said, ‘Yeah, though on the larger issue we have differences of opinion, but on that one thing you said, I agree with that.’ What it is, is simple, and that is to acknowledge sometimes when it needs to be. Say you agree, when you do. It does diminish anyone.

You made an oops, and acknowledged it. I acknowledged that and thanked you for your honesty. What is exactly wrong with that exchange?

Ask me a question. Quote me. And, I will respond respectfully. Answer my questions, when I quote you (global) and you earn my respect and a fuller appreciation of your position. What is exactly wrong with that?

I always thought that the sort of activity such as jamming sharp, flat objects into one’s fingernails, or suspending people and beating them with rods, or attaching electrodes to someone’s most sensitive areas was regarded as torture–you know, the sort of things that shock most of us by merely describing the barbarism that people will do to crush the bodies and wills of others.

Have any of you liberals who whine for the “rights” of these insane jihadists ever read about the REAL torture done against Americans by the Japanese during World War II? Or how about what the North Vietnamese did to our downed pilots? If you ever read accounts of what they went through, you’d see this in a FAR different light. It’s apples & oranges…

Moreover, having read all the Geneva Conventions, I know they don’t apply to terrorists. At all. Period. The General is WRONG. Read them yourselves, moonbats.

    Petraeus has said that:

    1. Gitmo and other PAST stuff has been bad PR

    2. Because of ONE (above) he supports “responsibly” closing GITMO, which is a good trick, and something Bush has been trying

    3. WE NEED TO STOP LOOKING IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR.

BTW – you’re wrong about the rape thing. Male-on-male rape was/is an acceptable part of aggressive tribal warfare in that part of the world: it is/was seen as the ultimate defeat of an enemy – humiliation through the exertion of dominance and denial of the enemy’s status as a man. In other words, somewhat better than the NYTimes and Washington Post. Drudge, you would know if you ever went there, compiles and reprints articles primarily from mainstream media. His accuracy depends on theirs. Now would you care to deal with the substance? No, thought not.

I am confounded by the impulse of the statists, who manifestly despise our nation, that has them militating for treatment of terrorists or their supporters that is not afforded American criminals in our own police stations or prisons.

Frankly, when people are openly working to destroy my very culture, my impulse is simply to destroy them until they change their minds. NO terrorist has any rights under any convention or law of which I know, though we have extended them many that none of us would be afforded.

It also clearly states that the individual does not breathe any water into the lungs – a claim that could not be made by the method employed on the DJ.
