Obama’s computer security police

By Michelle Malkin  •  May 29, 2009 11:52 AM

So, the president is going to tell us who his computer security czar soon.

Let’s hope it’s not the same person who ran the Obama campaign’s grossly insecure online credit card donation operations.

And why not? Seems to me he’d be an ideal fit for this administration. Just what a South Side Chicago Pol would want.

And, what’s with this “czar” business? Doesn’t that bring up images of a regime overthrown by those whom our “progressive” leaders idolize? Seems to me “Commisar” would be more appropriate to this outfit.

It’ll be someone like Kevin Mitnick:

Kevin Mitnick: A self-proclaimed “hacker poster boy,” Mitnick went through a highly publicized pursuit by authorities. His mischief was hyped by the media but his actual offenses may be less notable than his notoriety suggests. The Department of Justice describes him as “the most wanted computer criminal in United States history.” His exploits were detailed in two movies: Freedom Downtime and Takedown.

Mitnick had a bit of hacking experience before committing the offenses that made him famous. He started out exploiting the Los Angeles bus punch card system to get free rides. Then, like Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, dabbled in phone phreaking. Although there were numerous offenses, Mitnick was ultimately convicted for breaking into the Digital Equipment Corporation’s computer network and stealing software.

Mitnick’s mischief got serious when he went on a two and a half year “coast-to-coast hacking spree.” The CNN article, “Legendary computer hacker released from prison,” explains that “he hacked into computers, stole corporate secrets, scrambled phone networks and broke into the national defense warning system.” He then hacked into computer expert and fellow hacker Tsutomu Shimomura’s home computer, which led to his undoing.

Today, Mitnick has been able to move past his role as a black hat hacker and become a productive member of society. He served five years, about 8 months of it in solitary confinement, and is now a computer security consultant, author and speaker.

Just think of the fun this guy will have with the power of the One behind him!

Maybe we could arrange for Barney Frank to “stand behind him” to “look over his shoulder” and keep him honest. LOL….

    2 reasons: control and control.

The first one is about centralizing as much authority in the executive branch (away from congress, the private sector and the judiciary) as possible.

The second one is about Obama’s personal control. Notice, too, that he has appointed special envoys to areas where the state department already has under secretaries with authority. It’s exactly the same thing. Obama doesn’t want the authority in the traditional institutions, even if they theoretically work for him. He wants individuals answerable to him personally, not members of institutions with careers to think of.

    It’s all about power.

Exactly! That’s why Obama is appointing so many czars. The czar does the dirty work and Obama keeps his hands clean. But, if anything goes wrong, all they have to do is “shoot” the czar and throw him under the bus, and Obama emerges unsullied.

It also helps when Obama can appoint anyone he wants to be czar without going through a confirmation process involving nasty Senate hearings. It’s an end around the constitution because a “czar” doesn’t need legislative consent.
