White House pushing to gag stimulus critics

Caution: Obama gangland tactics at work.

In keeping with his past campaign tactics to shut critics up through brute force, the White House appears to be taking steps to crack down on critics of the trillion-dollar porkulus law.

Is anyone surprised? Mark Tapscott at the Examiner reports:

A new White House policy on permissible lobbying on economic recovery and stimulus project has taken a decidedly anti-First Amendment turn. It’s a classic illustration of Big Government trying to control every aspect of a particular activity and in the process running up against civil liberty.

Check out this passage from a post on the White House blog by Norm Eisen, Special Counsel to the President on Ethics and Government Reform (emphasis added):

“First, we will expand the restriction on oral communications to cover all persons, not just federally registered lobbyists. For the first time, we will reach contacts not only by registered lobbyists but also by unregistered ones, as well as anyone else exerting influence on the process. We concluded this was necessary under the unique circumstances of the stimulus program.

Writes Tapscott:

The key passage is the reference to expanding regulation from registered lobbyists to “anyone else exerting influence on the process. We concluded this was necessary under the unique circumstances of the stimulus program.”

This is the Camel’s nose under the tent…

    It does not sound quite grammatically correct. If the word “reach” were replaced by “restrict” it would make more sense.

    Moreover, is this addressing White House and Administration employees, or people who are asking questions, and lobbying? And, is the BLOG post a response to a specific question? What is that question?

    Since there is not a link, I will have to find it and attempt to post it here so that we will all have a better understanding of what was said.

    Corporatism is a feature of fascist economics. BIG business and BIG labor have historically be HAPPY to join in the game, because government power exempts them from the normal forces of market competition.

    Cherry picking notwithstanding, we are all better served in reading and completely understanding everything said in it’s entirety.

    The BLOG is mischaracterized when it is suggested that it calls for ‘gagging’. The BLOG says that not only will registered lobbyists have requirements to submit communications in writing, but that every one will be required to submit communications in writing. Why? So that those communications can be posted on the internet.

    No one is being gagged. Registered Lobbyist and (now) others will still be able to communicate with Agencies in regard to Recovery Act Funds. Everyone will just have to do it writing.

    I suppose this is part of the attempt of the Obama Administration to become more transparent. We will see if it works.

    Respectfully, I have to disagree. Some lobbyists are experts in a field of science or technology. They serve a VERY useful purpose in trying to educate legislators, who tend to be ignorant of science, business, economics, etc., etc., etc.

    The NRA, for instance, is a decidedly lobbying organization. THEY actually read bills, and find the hidden pearls of abuse DESIGNED to be obscured in many bills.

    Rags, Yes, they can serve a useful purpose. However, even with the NRA, that purpose is to prevent the power of the government from hurting their clients, the gun owners of America. The power of the government makes these lobbyists necessary, even the “good” lobbyists.

    Also, the lobbyists that are the experts are there to shape laws, either for their clients or to hurt their client’s enemies. (The government can always call on the experts to give information in committees.)

    It all gets back to the size and power of the government. It is too big, too intrusive. Unfortunately, we all know the direction it is going.

    We may be speaking past each other, though. As long as the government exists in its present form, lobbyists will exist, and “good” lobbyist will be necessary.

    It all gets back to the size and power of the government. It is too big, too intrusive. Unfortunately, we all know the direction it is going.

    Emphatically, I agree.

    As I have said here before, as well, it also leads…inevitably…to a Balkinization of the American people. Federalism allows for the expression of the people in the states, which might be at polar opposites, without imposing the expression of one view or another on the entire nation. Statism forces us all into a blood-struggle for all the marbles.

    Concentrated power is the reason for so many of the structural problems I have alluded to so many times before…problems that cannot be remedied by an election of new blood into the same system.

    If we feed new meat into the machine, it will simply grind it up, as we have seen over the decades now.

    The 1A, or anything in the Constitution, doesn’t “grant” or give anyone any rights. It protects rights granted by God. All our Constitutional rights existed before it was written.
    Government officials are our employees, not our masters. Does the phrase “public servant” ring a bell? Their sole legitimate function is to protect rights as codified in the Constitution.
    Government officials are restricted by the Constitution, not the people.

    Let me take it a bit further. I interpret this to mean (1) anyone turning stimulus money down or (2) anyone, being unable to turn stimulus money down, taking stimulus money and wanting to give it back or (3) anyone taking stimulus money and, being unable to give it back, saying they wish they had never taken it. That’s how I interpret it, these being “unique circumstances” and all.

    That is why it is so incredibly important that ACORN be exposed in all its corruption! This must not be allowed to continue!!     McCain might have been marginally better-not a lot. McCain too believed in restricting free speech, Reasonable restricting on the Second Amendment, he was all for big government with big spending–but perhaps with some more efficiency. He most certainly would have picked a Sonia Sotomayor type for the Supreme Court-Gang of Fourteen ring a bell?

    Sad to say but for the last number of years we have been give the choice between a pig in a poke and a poke in the eye. Time will tell, or not, but I believe that if Johnny Mac had of won the cause of Conservatism would be set back further. Many of us in Arizona are one shoting our political time and contributions in trying to deny old Mac the nomination for re-election in 2010. If he gets it I plan to sit on my checkbook and vote.

    Quite a flap over a silly comment using Hussein’s middle name. That IS Obama’s middle name…right? So using it is somehow BAD? I don’t get it! If Barack Hussein Obama is ashamed of his middle name, maybe he should change it. Anyway, I don’t care much for O’Reilly, and he is definitely getting too big for his britches. I probably will continue watching his show, though, because it can be very interesting at times. And, I’m not one of the Nielsen family that affects his ratings. I just wish someone could take him down a notch without destroying him. He needs a reality check.
