Tax cheat Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is a laughingstock in Congress. A permanent punchline on late-night TV. And he’s a joke in China, too:
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday reassured the Chinese government that its huge holdings of dollar assets are safe and reaffirmed his faith in a strong U.S. currency.
A major goal of Geithner’s maiden visit to China as Treasury chief is to allay concerns that Washington’s bulging budget deficit and ultra-loose monetary policy will fan inflation, undermining both the dollar and U.S. bonds.
China is the biggest foreign owner of U.S. Treasury bonds. U.S. data shows that it held $768 billion in Treasuries as of March, but some analysts believe China’s total U.S. dollar-denominated investments could be twice as high.
“Chinese assets are very safe,” Geithner said in response to a question after a speech at Peking University, where he studied Chinese as a student in the 1980s.
His answer drew loud laughter from his student audience, reflecting scepticism in China about the wisdom of a developing country accumulating a vast stockpile of foreign reserves instead of spending the money to raise living standards at home.
Last week, I recommended these baby kneepads for Geithner as he grovels to the Commie regime to keep America afloat.
Looks like he needs a Thudguard helmet as well.

Finding yourself in the position of having to send relays of high-ranking American government officials to suck up to the Chinese creates a strict-liability case that when it comes to standing up for America, you’ve really screwed the pooch.
He should’ve taken Nobel-prize winning economist Paul Krugman on his stand-up comedy tour with him to help reassure them that “when it comes to inflation, the only thing we have to fear is inflation fear itself“.
Another good laughline is “there’s no hint of inflationary pressures in the economy right now. Consumer prices are lower now than they were a year ago”. The main reason Geithner is on an emergency trip to China is because the Treasury yield curve steepened sharply last Wednesday after the completion of the 7-year auction despite the Feds efforts to contain the impact of the various Treasury auctions.
It was strongly suspected that China was selling its longer maturities in the open market after having bought the shorter maturities at auction. China is also suspected of hedging its longer bonds as well.
China had also been caught buying the gold the IMF countries were selling to contain gold prices in hopes of protecting their currencies. China is also hoarding copper, steel and other commodities for industrial reasons as well as a hedge against the dollar which is again in steep decline.
It is no laughing matter that a creditor country with a per capita income of $2,000 has a debtor country with a per capita income of over $43,000 over a barrel. Our world economic power has been greatly diminished.
If we don’t stop printing money to finance our government’s efforts to borrow its way out of debt, we will eventually become a third-world economy.

And, in other news today, Geithner told GM investors, “Your assets are safe in the hands of the Union.” When asked if by “Union” he meant the Country or the UAW, he said “yes” and declined any futher comment.

The Bush budget would not have had 1 trillion deficits for the next 10 years bumping our debt burdens into the 80% range. Just because he spent more than fiscal conservatives liked, and rang up deficits (due to the lowest tax burdens since the 1950s) does not mean it was anywhere near the level the Obama administration is planning to spend and run up deficits. That’s the issue.
That’s why the Chinese and everyone else is laughing. The Obama administration has no answer, they just keep pimping more government spending programs and “we’ll tax the rich”.
The fools who believed that Bush was fiscally irresponsible will eventually see that it was peanuts (or more accurately..wrong) compared to the alternative we have now. Brace yourself.

In all likelihood, the only thing our “representatives” are not lying about is giving a bunch of “troubled assets” (In the form of real estate and mortgages if I am not mistaken?) to the Chinese to secure those loans and keep whatever money they can coming in.
