Tim Geithner is a joke in China, too

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 1, 2009 03:07 PM

Tax cheat Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is a laughingstock in Congress. A permanent punchline on late-night TV. And he’s a joke in China, too:

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday reassured the Chinese government that its huge holdings of dollar assets are safe and reaffirmed his faith in a strong U.S. currency.

A major goal of Geithner’s maiden visit to China as Treasury chief is to allay concerns that Washington’s bulging budget deficit and ultra-loose monetary policy will fan inflation, undermining both the dollar and U.S. bonds.

China is the biggest foreign owner of U.S. Treasury bonds. U.S. data shows that it held $768 billion in Treasuries as of March, but some analysts believe China’s total U.S. dollar-denominated investments could be twice as high.

“Chinese assets are very safe,” Geithner said in response to a question after a speech at Peking University, where he studied Chinese as a student in the 1980s.

His answer drew loud laughter from his student audience, reflecting scepticism in China about the wisdom of a developing country accumulating a vast stockpile of foreign reserves instead of spending the money to raise living standards at home.

Last week, I recommended these baby kneepads for Geithner as he grovels to the Commie regime to keep America afloat.

Looks like he needs a Thudguard helmet as well.

How do you say “snort-worthy” in Mandarin?

Seventeen of 23 Chinese economists polled in connection with Geithner’s visit said holdings of Treasuries are a “great risk” for the nation’s economy, according to a Chinese state media report yesterday. Still, the majority argued against quickly cutting them, the Beijing-based Global Times reported.

Geithner, 47, needs to show how the U.S. can prevent the value of China’s investment from being eroded by a weaker dollar or by the inflation that might be stoked by the stimulus money being pumped into the U.S. economy, according to Yu.

It will be helpful if Geithner can show us some arithmetic,” he said.

“No one is going to be more concerned about future deficits than we are,” Geithner told reporters.

The main reason Geithner is on an emergency trip to China is because the Treasury yield curve steepened sharply last Wednesday after the completion of the 7-year auction despite the Feds efforts to contain the impact of the various Treasury auctions.

It was strongly suspected that China was selling its longer maturities in the open market after having bought the shorter maturities at auction. China is also suspected of hedging its longer bonds as well.

China had also been caught buying the gold the IMF countries were selling to contain gold prices in hopes of protecting their currencies. China is also hoarding copper, steel and other commodities for industrial reasons as well as a hedge against the dollar which is again in steep decline.

It is no laughing matter that a creditor country with a per capita income of $2,000 has a debtor country with a per capita income of over $43,000 over a barrel. Our world economic power has been greatly diminished.

If we don’t stop printing money to finance our government’s efforts to borrow its way out of debt, we will eventually become a third-world economy.

ANOTHER comedian hits the Obama Comedy Tour stage…

WASHINGTON — It is not every 31-year-old who, in a first government job, finds himself dismantling General Motors and rewriting the rules of American capitalism.

But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry.

Nor, for that matter, had he given much thought to what ailed an industry that had been in decline ever since he was born. A bit laconic and looking every bit the just-out-of-graduate-school student adjusting to life in the West Wing — “he’s got this beard that appears and disappears,” says Steven Rattner, one of the leaders of President Obama’s automotive task force — Mr. Deese was thrown into the auto industry’s maelstrom as soon the election-night parties ended.

“There was a time between Nov. 4 and mid-February when I was the only full-time member of the auto task force,” Mr. Deese, a special assistant to the president for economic policy, acknowledged recently as he hurried between his desk at the White House and the Treasury building next door. “It was a little scary.”

Yes it’s all the fault of the GOP. [roll eyes]

The Bush budget would not have had 1 trillion deficits for the next 10 years bumping our debt burdens into the 80% range. Just because he spent more than fiscal conservatives liked, and rang up deficits (due to the lowest tax burdens since the 1950s) does not mean it was anywhere near the level the Obama administration is planning to spend and run up deficits. That’s the issue.

That’s why the Chinese and everyone else is laughing. The Obama administration has no answer, they just keep pimping more government spending programs and “we’ll tax the rich”.

The fools who believed that Bush was fiscally irresponsible will eventually see that it was peanuts (or more accurately..wrong) compared to the alternative we have now. Brace yourself.

Rags: I agree completely. Obama is much worse but it was Bush who opened the flood gates and the current Vichy Republicans refuse to fight because they don’t have the votes. Maybe they could find the votes if they at least mouthed the words and took the fight to wherever they need to take it.

At the moment, we are fighting a one-party government and should couch our arguments accordingly. Not that Michelle makes a clear distinction between conservatives and Republicans. It is a very important point.

The GOP feels entitled top our votes. We don’t need them. They should be crawling on their yellow bellies begging us to come back. Instead, they make waging war against us a first priority.

    Two notes:

Hugh Hewitt has unconditionally called the GM take-over socialism, and advocates that NOBODY buy a GM product.

Mitt Romney has said that stock in GM held by THE ONE should be distributed to the American people. Of course, that would NOT rectify the sins of THE ONE, but it would at least make some sense in a capitalist framework, as opposed to what we now have.

Agreed. Neither party gives a rat’s patoot about OUR liberty. The question is, do we?

The Chinese can’t trust our WORD anymore and I wouldn’t either. Our federal government and treasury are a joke and they think that they can manage healthcare without it being a complete disaster?

How completely doormat-like do liberals need to be to understand that, in the end, they’re irrevocably changing capitalism on its head? Do they actually think that, after managing the military TRICARE system, that its civilian system will be any better? I think it’s time for America to freaking wake up already.

The Chinese would never dare laugh at their leadership but they openly mock our “representatives” (Certainly not representative of me but definitely NOT my leaders) because they know that they are lying through their teeth. In all likelihood, the only thing our “representatives” are not lying about is giving a bunch of “troubled assets” (In the form of real estate and mortgages if I am not mistaken?) to the Chinese to secure those loans and keep whatever money they can coming in.

Dang I hope I am wrong but …
