The irony is that our President could have a sister soldjuh moment, and show some real leadership, which might go a long way towards ending the endless blame game, and the demagoguery that results in incidents like the murder of Tiller, and even the murder of Private Long; though I think the wacky left has raised the blame game to a new art form.
Imagine the President saying something like:
“Incidents like the murder of Doctor Tiller, and the murder of Private Long are tragic. But the only ones responsible for those crimes are the perpetrators themselves. We must stop taking tragic moments and politicizing them. This has no place in civil discourse, and only serves to further poison the political atmosphere, and stifle civil debate. Both sides must stop this immediately, or we will slip deeper into reckless partisanship and ideology.”
I believe that would be showing leadership, and would make a real difference, or at least be a start. But I won’t hold my breath.

I think your point has merit; the anonymity of the internet has contributed to the incivility we see in too many online postings.
But I’ve also known people who know one another personally (i.e. have met face-to-face and established relationships) who have written things online (places like Facebook and LiveJournal, as just two examples) that have destroyed those relationships (and more).
And IMHO the blame belongs as much to the anything goes mentality that is prevalent in society today as to the ease and immediacy of posting that the internet grant us.

–Expressions of desire to stop Tiller on a pro-life blog weren’t very far from that person actually killing Tiller. I think it’s a shorter distance from contempt to action for some people than we’d all like to see.

Sadly, my experience would suggest that you’re spot on in your suspicions. Not to get into it, but a respectfully worded objection to an ad hominem attack was met with deafening silence – not even an acknowledgment of my message (and that was a private e-mail, not an anonymous online posting).
Respect has to be a two way road – respect, not to be confused with acquiescence. Experience has too often indicated that the other side will accept nothing but submission from those who disagree with their views.
And that individual – emphasis on individual – will pay the penalty for his actions.
Are you willing to wait until MM or someone else like her is likewise murdered? I honestly don’t think you are, but to try to equate the two things isn’t the right way to convince others of that.

Well, I was banned by Ed from Hot Air because I continued to ask (politely) why Planned Parenthood should be defunded (because it didn’t report fictional minor sex abuse in about 8 cases) yet the Catholic hospitals and related institutions should continue to be funded.
I’m still pissed at him for that.
Because Catholic hospitals and religious charities provide VITAL, life-saving medical services – like cancer treatments and corrective surgeries – to the unemployed and the uninsured that are not otherwise available.
In eastern KY, the services these such hospitals and clinics provide are essential; the services planned parenthood provides are not.
You can’t. Many here have tried and are immediately banned for taking an opposite view. But please do try and then get back to us and let us know how it goes. After all, you’ll still be able to post here on this site despite the fact that this web site (according to you) perpetuates the climate of hate.
Yeah, but if not reporting child abuse is the reason to defund, how can you defend continuing to fund Catholic hospitals? Literally thousands of children have been abused by priests in the US, Canada and Ireland, with the resultant coverups (and, in some cases, attempts to blame the victims).

The reason that liberals like this are such “potty-mouths” is that they lack the formal education and/or intelligence to come up with original phrases. Sadly, they can only keep falling back on the same set of boring English curse words that can only be used in severely limited variations.
