Reports: North Korea sentences American journos to 12 years in a labor camp

I blogged back in March about the plight of Laura Ling and Euna Lee, two American journalists working for Al Gore’s Current TV who were seized by NoKo soldiers after crossing the border illegally into the country from China while on assignment.
The Yonhap news agency just published an urgent bulletin tonight that the two reporters have been sentenced to 12 years in labor camp. AP says Ling and Lee were sentenced for committing an unspecified “grave crime” in addition to the illegal border-crossing. Keep them in your prayers.
They are pawns in a much bigger chess game, of course.

North Korea threatened on Monday to retaliate with “extreme” measures if the United Nations punished it for last month’s nuclear test, with Washington saying it may put Pyongyang back on its list of states that sponsor terrorism.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday North Korea’s recent activities were being scrutinized for evidence of “support for international terrorism,” a designation that could subject the impoverished state to more financial sanctions.
The U.N. Security Council may adopt a new resolution as early as this week, but there is clear division among some members over how tough the measures against the reclusive state should be.
“Our response would be to consider sanctions against us as a declaration of war and answer it with extreme hardline measures,” the North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said in a commentary.
An increasingly aggressive North indicated it was gearing up for fresh moves, issuing a no-sail warning off its east coast up to 260 km (160 miles) off the Wonsan area from where it launched a missile in May and a barrage of short-range missiles in 2006.

On Saturday, Obama grumbled about his busy schedule during a stop in Caen.
“I would love nothing more than to have a leisurely week in Paris, stroll down the Seine, take my wife out to a nice meal, have a picnic in Luxembourg Gardens. Those days are over, for the moment,” Obama said to laughter.
Obama called French President Nicholas Sarkozy a friend and said the pair can pick up the phone and chat anytime.
“I think you guys are reading too much into my schedule,” Obama said.
The president flew back to Washington on Sunday afternoon. On Monday, he planned to join Vice President Joe Biden at a Cabinet meeting on reviving the economy.

This gives Obama something he wants: an opportunity to turn a blind eye towards the Norks’ nuclear ambitions.
Bargaining for the reporters’ freedom would of course be good for the reporters, but more to the point, it would be good for Obama The Humanitarian. “Look how wonderful he is, caring for the plight of just two people.”
Whether it’s good for anyone – or everyone – else is beside the point.
Did anyone expect nothing less? It is definitely agreed that the Great Pretender is long past due his loin girding moment/sarcasm off.

I was not aware that these journalists were on Al Gore’s payroll. You’d think that the great bloated one could have been a little more vocal in his support.

It couldn’t possibly be from the reports of all the parties they have every night at the White House. It couldn’t be from the “secret, Off The Record” trips out to get the press corp and other toadies cheesburgers on the tax payer’s dime. Maybe it was from the flight to Chicago on Valentine’s Day to wine and dine Lady MacBeth? Could that be it? Oh, I know, maybe it was from his fulfilling yet ANOTHER “campaign Promise” to his wife by taking her out yet again to dinner and this time a Broadway Show!
Maybe it was another of their “date nights” in Georgetown where it not only costs thousands of dollars in security, but also they were given their own private menus.
These two have been treating the Office of the President like their own personal travel agent, and the tax payer’s money like their own personal trust fund. They fly everywhere on a whim just so they can have dinner, or see some sights or whatever. They are living it up like someone who just won the lottery while everyone else in the nation suffers, you know…with higher unemployment then what Bush had AFTER 9-11.
So no…I have no idea where they would have got the idea that he would have such time.
The “false modesty” and “Just one of the little people” crap is wearing really thin. I don’t know what is worse and more disgusting: Obama using that ploy, or the absolute, complete morons who are buying it and making excuses and apologies for him.
I feel deep in my bones that the day is coming when this usurper will be exposed for who and what he is. I can only pray that day comes sooner rather than later, and when it does, it could very well be the biggest Constitutional crisis this nation has ever, or will ever face.

Some reports are saying the NK went into China and kidnapped these women. Other reports said Al Gore was going to go talk to NK and get them freed. Which is it?

I’ve been to Europe and Asia, in my travels. It’s always been an understanding that if you break the law, you will be punished according to their system. The U.S. embassy won’t protect you. These reporters broke the law, and in the worse country around;a very foolish act. Now, they are also “pawns”. I suspect once NK has finished “using them”, in a gesture of “good will”, they will be free…hopefully, not as naive and gullible, as they were.

It would appear Obozo could take a lesson from Li’l Kim on border security. Having said that I find it schadenfreudalicious these reporters work for Algore. After all, wasn’t he part of the same administration that sent Madeline Notbright to look Li’l Kim in the eye and claim him to be trustworthy?

OMG I am so sick of this I can’t see straight. Yes, I noticed that as well. So where is all the media outrage that was present when George W. Bush, after no doubt one of the most stressful periods a President has faced in decades, decided to play a round of golf. The media lambasted him for that. Never mind that the guy probably needed a brief break to refresh. And I wouldn’t fault Obama if he needed to take a breather under the same conditions.

boycott GM and Chrysler; 9) prosecute Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorn; and, 10) revoke Jermiah Wright’s non-profit status.
Those are my top 10. Each one has many reasons for making them urgently necessary to push on. We may not succeed but pushing hard from the grassroots level will put this wet cardboard Administration on the defensive and give Rahm Emmanuel nightmares he cant begin to comprehend about We, The People— a lot he holds in high contempt.

I can understand the “date-night” in Paris thing – they were already in Europe on official business and paying a cordial visit to France was to be expected – so for the First Couple to spend a few hours together in a French cafe seems only natural to me.
But I can’t understand sticking tax payers with the travel expenses for a dedicated date-night in NYC – spending no time on gov related business – while the country is in the midst of a recession.
Likewise, I highly doubt the MSM would have seen it as oh-so romantic had President Bush and First Lady Laura taken such trips.

The Jeffersonian mentality of Barack al Obama should not surprise anyone. He, and his wife Weezie, have “moved on up” to the Eastside, and are entitled to live by the fantastical standards they believe are reserved for the ruling elite.
Le Roi has assimilated language appropriate for his loftiness…“We are not amused!” will be an oft mused, if not spoken, retort. His malcontent sidekick, she of the mean-mouthed under bite, is assuaged somewhat by all the worldwide travel and shopping opportunities. Curious though that we don’t ever see her in the traditional “Queen” attire, replete with lofty head gear (a la Aretha), displaying her pride in their African heritage. (Wouldn’t that just complete the clown act?)
Perhaps it is just me, but I think the world views this “power couple” as more of a curiousity than an example of American diversity or equality. We shall see if “The One” (not Jet Li), is really taken seriously by the world leaders in the coming months. So far, it doesn’t look very promising. They will find, as have some back in the homeland, that his butt can’t cash the checks his mouth is writing.

Nice try but they wouldn’t have to “rescue” the illegals – we would want to give them back to Mexico post haste. So the scenarios are apples and oranges.
Although I agree that these women shouldn’t have been doing what they were doing and certainly need some punishment for putting us in this situation. In this case, NK is using them to show case the USA’s weakness and impotence to thier ChiCom buddies. Obama’s lack of any action on the matter simply proves NK right.
This, like most of Obama’s (and his DemoCommie buddies’) actions, emboldens our enemies and will lead to the deaths of many Americans.

I’m not sure I understand the outrage shown on this thread. We conservative Americans are up in arms about the “illegals” coming to our country, crossing the boarders(southern, mostly), did not these women do the same thing in N.K? If I’ve missed something, please help me understand. At this point is seems hypocritical, show me other wise.
I think the illegal border crossing into North Korea at AlBore’s behest is an action with consequences.

It is very hypocritical to condemn them for stopping illegal aliens. But we don’t give illegal aliens 12 years hard labor for breaking our laws either. I don’t think even the most serious anti-illegal immigration types among us (myself included) wouldn’t want that.
