Shooting at National Holocaust Museum Updated: Museum guard dies; shooter wasn’t “left” or “right,” just plain loony
Scroll for updates…
Details just coming in.
Via FoxNews: “At least two people were shot at the national Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., Wednesday, an official told FOX News. Other media reports said a man walked into the museum and shot a security guard. Another guard returned fire, wounding the alleged shooter. ”
AP bulletin here.
Tom Elia is tracking.

Update: The shooter…
The suspect in Wednesday’s shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is James von Brunn, an 88-year-old white supremacist from Maryland, two law enforcement officials told CNN.
Von Brunn served six years in prison on federal attempted kidnapping, assault and firearms charges after what he called a citizen’s “legal, nonviolent citizens arrest” of members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
On his Web site, “Holy Western Empire,” von Brunn said he was “convicted by a Negro jury, Jew/Negro attorneys, and sentenced to prison for eleven years by a Jew judge.”
“He is in our files going back way into the 1980s,” said Heidi Beirich, a researcher for the Montgomery, Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center.
“He has extremely long history with neo-Nazis and white supremacists. He’s written extremely incendiary publications, raging about Jews, blacks and the like.”
The suspect and a security guard were wounded in Wednesday afternoon’s shooting at the museum, U.S. Park Police said.
District of Columbia police and the FBI said the shooting appeared to have been the work of a single gunman and there was no prior indication of the attack.

Inevitable: The blame game has already begun. Here’s Kos implicating the Tea Party movement.
Ditto Donald Douglas: “The spin on the left is that the suspect, James Von Brunn, is an agent of the GOP’s “Christian-fascist” base. The truth is, via Melissa Clouthier, this guy’s a deranged Holocaust denier. He represents no one on the conservative right – not me, nor any of those with whom I associate.”
Melissa Clouthier: “Remember, Markos, it’s our President who is wanting to meet with another Holocaust denier, President Ahmadinejad.”
Francis Beckwith notes that Von Brunn was an all-inclusive nutball hater who bashed both Jews and Christians.
Milblogger Greyhawk at Mudville Gazette notes the veteran-bashing claims of vindication by reporters citing the DHS right-wing extremism report. (Aside: Has anyone actually verified the lunatic gunman’s claims that he is a veteran? Update: Verified here according to Navy records.)

Update: Heroic museum guard dies. Keep him in your prayers:
The security guard who was initially targeted was wounded; he was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he died from his injuries, high level D.C. police sources told ABC 7′s Jennifer Donelan.
Sources say the gunman remains in critical condition at George Washington University Hospital.
The guard’s name was Stephen Tyrone Johns. Don’t forget.

More from Kathy Shaidle about the shooter — a 9/11 Truther who hated “neo-cons:”
The man accused of opening fire at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC on June 10, James W. von Brunn, left a trail of unhinged writings around the internet.
The anti-semitism of von Brunn is the first thing one notices when visiting these bizarre websites. However, like those of most “white supremacists”, many of von Brunn’s political views track “Left” rather than “Right.” Clearly, a re-evaluation of these obsolete definitions is long overdue.
For example, he unleashed his hatred of both Presidents Bush and other “neo-conservatives” in online essays. As even some “progressives” such as the influential Adbusters magazine publicly admit, “neoconservative” is often used as a derogatory code word for “Jews”. As well, even a cursory glance at “white supremacist” writings reveals a hatred of, say, big corporations that is virtually indistinguishable from that of anti-globalization activists.
James von Brunn’s advocacy of 9/11 conspiracy theories also gives him an additional commonality with individuals on the far-left.
***
Kos and the lunatic gunman today and the lunatic gunman who killed Pvt. Long share more in common that the rest of us — their world view is centered on contempt for what this nation stands for and are consumed with an abiding hatred of George W. Bush and the “neocons.”
Geoffrey Dickens at Newsbusters:
Salon.com Editor-in-Chief Joan Walsh, on Wednesday night’s “Hardball,” cited “conservatives” like Rush Limbaugh, Michelle Malkin and Bill O’Reilly for “whipping up” a climate that sparks the likes of alleged Holocaust Museum shooter James Von Brunn and “Hardball” host Chris Matthews wondered if access to guns were to blame for the tragedy as he cried, “It’s easier to get your hands on a gun than to get somebody to make you a waffle.”

Its the world the left created. We didn’t react this way after 9/11.
Jeremiah Wright isn’t too jazzed about a nation that officially persecuted his people for hundreds of years. I don’t agree with him, but I don’t blame him.
John Hagee called the Catholic Church the “great whore,” stated that Hitler was just carrying out a “divine plan,” and and claimed that Jews’ “rebellion had birthed the seed of antisemitism that would arise and bring destruction to them for centuries to come.”
Compared to John Hagee, Jeremiah Wright is freaking Mr. Rogers.
I’ve said it a million times. Our humanity hasn’t kept up with our technology. IMHO, the internet has done more to demoralize and devalue our fellow man than any one thing. That being said, I do not for an instance, believe anyone who posted on this thread doesn’t feel the sadness of this tragedy.
And miss out on a chance to yet again further their campaign to marginalize Christians and conservatives on behalf of agnostic liberalism? Not the MSM I’ve come to know -
Here you go:
My 2 cents for all those trying to make a big deal about Christian praying for Jews conversions, Christians pray for all people of all faiths to be converted.
It is not anti semitic, it is not anti anything. It is an injustice to Christianity to present this as an animosity. Christians believe that Christ came for all mankind and that it is only through Christ that anyone can be saved. This requires conversion from all belief sets.
It is not Jews are bad and they must be a convert to be good. It is ALL ARE BAD & ALL MUST CONVERT TO BE SAVED. There is no favoritism.
And where this will ultimately go with the thought police making policy now-a-days.
Well said…that’ll preach.
The guard who died was named Stephen Johns.
His name is more important than the killer’s, but will be referred to much less often.
Stephen Johns. He was the man who worked at a job where he could be…and today was…required to put himself between innocent people and a crazed killer.
Stephen Johns. A good name. Worthy of honor.
But a major difference between Christians and Mohammedans is that we believe conversion should be through persuasion, not at the point of a sword… or butcher knife… or AK-47…
He is, after all, God becoming man and providing Himself to be the perfect sacrifice for the redemption from sin. No argument, only mercy.
You’re quoting Hagee’s sermons out of context. I’m not defending him and I don’t follow his ministry, but I’ve seen the full text of those quotes on various discussion shows and though I vehemently disagree with them, the overall message was much less hatefilled than you portray here.
As for Reverend Wright, no. He is not Mr. Rogers.
And he misrepresents Christ.
Amen. My thoughts and prayers with his family, friends, and fellow officers.
Amen.
May God comfort his soul.
That’s what I get when I assume. Lesson learned – don’t dismiss the modern Nazis.
There are many, many theories as to what set this guy off. Blaming tea parties on one hand, or the President’s “Blame America First” tour of the Middle East on the other, is fruitless.
Only one thing motivated this heinous act: the evil in the shooter’s heart.
But as surely as the murderer acted upon that evil, no amount of state-approved, PC, “Kumbaya” indoctrination will ever eradicate it.
As I said above, there needs to be a full, unobstructed investigation into this guy, his contacts, his organization(s), and his organization’s(s’) contacts.
Jeremiah Wright isn’t too jazzed about a nation that officially persecuted his people for hundreds of years.
uh I quoted what he said…and what is so ‘extreme’ about it? hmmm??
you keep throwing out a bunch of lies and BS, but thats about it…typical for left-wing wacko.
you obviously cannot respond to what I wrote, so you have to go back to talking points…no surprise there…
but you sure do BLAME robertson, hagee, et al…hypocrite.
so people of color get a pass, and can do anything huh? I’m part black and part native american…and I find your comments condescending, and racist.
you do realize that even the devil is part of God’s divine plan, don’t you? or are you lying about being catholic??
The Lord places whom He will on the thrown…and thats just as true now, as when Daniel spoke it about Nebuchednezzar
Daniel 4:
17 ” ‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men.’
but this is a deep theological argument…and you have shown little capacity for anything other than talking points…
throne…sorry.
Heh-heh, by and large, the left always assumes Conservatives are white, and that anyone who isn’t white needs their help in life…
Well said Rags. Well said.
Stephen Johns held his ground, and protected the visitors. We should be discussing his courage, his devotion to duty and his sacrifice, not the lunacy of the piece of human debris who shot him.
Dexter, christianity has been spread by the sword many times, the targets mostly being the “Christ killers”(Jews) and “savages”(natives). Just ask Columbus, Cortez, the Inquisition, etc. Basically those beacons of western civilization conservatives love to defend. Although this is largely a relic of the past, it’s a good reminder to the Muslims that they can change their ways.
R4L:
As I am sure you know, to clowns like that poster, you are likely seen as a sell-out.
You are not an individual to that poster.
To that poster you are merely a member of a group who is disloyal to, and a traitor to, said group; and who is ignorant of why he should be loyal to said group.
For the overwhelming majority of the rest of us posters here, however, you are an individual, and a fellow American.
Keep on keeping on.
yeah they don’t know what to do with people like Hutcherson…I’m sure they’re delighted he has cancer though…
thank you my friend!
of course they don’t know what to do with the vote on prop 8 in CA…
Be sure to let the rest of us know how waiting for “…the Muslims…” to …”change their ways….” works out for you after you make nice to them while they’re blowing people up, imposing sharia, honor killing, etc.
the inquisition killed what, 2000 people over a couple hundred years?
compare that to the MILLIONS slaughtered by the muslims…or the atheists???
you libs are beyond stupid…
Oh god, a truther. That sort of stupidity is beyond left or right, but will be blamed on the right by the MSM.
Too true…An honorable death though, a sad commentary on extremists of whatever stripe. I also honor the other guard that put him on the ground in response.
oh yeah RSS I’m also married to a black lady…an African…
bet you think I’m a racist too!!
btw: I’m also part german and irish…I’m a mutt…
A day that I hope to see in this life, BUT…
while there is a segment of that religion working to not just kill Americans but our entire culture…
I will actively support killing them first.
Hard.
It is the only rational response.
Always ignored is that the Christians committing atrocities in the past were not following and upholding the eternal teachings of the Gospel;
whereas the loony, barbaric, jihadi Moslems today, as in the past, justify their evil acts on the basis of the koran and hadiths…
…unless Robert Spencer, Bat Ye’or, and Andrew Bostom don’t know what the hell they’re talking and writing about.
I wonder if he thinks jokes about pointing guns at Obama & Pelosi are funny?
As we learend way back in high school…hybrid vigor!
I’m “100%” extraction of my grandparents’ native European country.
However, the Mediterranean has been the crossroads of three continents for at least ?3500-6000? years of history (i.e., written), if my memory serves me.
So, what with conquests and migrations, I have no doubt that I am a mix of Slavic, Greek, Italian, Jewish, Turkish, (black) African, Persian, Scandinavian, Arab, French, German, (ancient) Egyptian…..
The internet is a WONDERFUL thing.
From the killer’s own website….
He hated Christians, just as he hated Jews.
Ilovemycountry said: nothing. Seriously, why do you bother even typing crap like that?
BTW over on huffpo they are calling for all right wing extremists to be acted against. That means us.
TAKE NOTICE—
The Holocaust Museum killer, in his OWN WORDS…
He was NO CHRISTIAN…AT ALL…IN ANY FORM.
And, he was not a TEA Party participant.
He was a NUT.
However, Black Muslims are okie-dokie…Especially if they kill Soldiers in Arkansas.
Oops…should have said…Unarmed soldiers…Allah, and our Dhimmi enslaver-in-chief. Donkeys do not know what the word ‘Honor’ means.
Amazing to other countries that our military hasn’t done a Sadat on Dear Leader.
You’ve fallen for the victimhood lie. Jeremiah Wright and his followers should be thankful to God for having been brought here. Our forebears may have meant it for evil but maybe God meant it for good. When are black leaders going to encourage their followers to be grateful for their USA heritage? Instead, he fans the flames of bitterness, envy, and hatred to get something for nothing and tries to guilt others into giving them a free ride in life. …and guest what? We repented of our sinful ways and freed the slaves. Don’t we get credit for that??? So, yes, I do blame “Reverend” Wright for his behavior. He’s causing young ones to stumble, and surely you know what Christ has to say about that.
You tell us: what exactly do the Jeremiah Wrights want us whites to do? How much reparations are required for them to finally shut up and start working along side of us? How many laws must be passed? What words are we to say? How much stuff are we to give them? How many rights must we grant? What’s it going to take, Red? When are they going to stop being angry? WHEN?
You can’t excuse someone’s bad behavior by saying someone else’s is worse. That’s lgm’s MO.
No one has ever become a Christian at sword point and no one ever will.
White Supremacy used to be a core tennent of the Democratic Party (Senator Byrd). The KKK was full of rabidly enthusiastic Democrats.
Don’t let anyone sell you the “Right-wing” associations…
This guy is simply an old, possibly senile nutcase who wanted to die “in a blaze of glory”, basically. Maybe he voted for Ron Paul. Maybe he voted for an old white guy out of general principle. He is, however, 100% loon.
That should be something both liberals AND conservatives agree upon.
Well certianly it has been shown that the left loons thought it was funny to depict Pres. George W. Bush being slaughtered or dismembered on protest posters…
I’ve seen my share of hate-groups, having growing up in the SF Bay Area. It’s a non-starter to blame anyone but the guilty. Not their parents, religious affiliation/or lack thereof, educational opportunities, or the fact a girlfriend in high school dumped them. And please don’t go to a medical problem/condition for defense. This man hates because he can.
This incident will only encourage the anti-gun lobby to push even harder for gun control. Well, this man had previously been convicted of a Fed. crime and spent 6yrs. as a guest of a prison, if the reports are correct. What was he doing with a weapon in the first place? In lieu of a gun, he could have made a bomb with the info that’s out there on the net – or, a simple bottle filled with gasoline and a wornout sock to light it.
Prayers for the fallen security guard and his family.
Speaking of which, we have a local update:
Sounds like those at GITMO…guilty. However, Mr. Obenevolent has other ideas.
Bring it!
Then who will fund their fascist paradise…!?!?!?
That’s a pretty good trick since he was also anti-Christian.
Jeremiah Wright is three-quarters white. Who exactly are “his people”?
You can always count on lgm to get the facts wrong.
Though lgm does seem to be a pretty anti-Christian Jewish guy.
Weird, I fail to see the Tea Party and Holocaust Museum connection. I guess only someone as dumb as a kosack would.
lgm Post 89:
As opposed to muslims that kill those that don’t convert.
The accused has admitted in an interview his actions. Doesn’t that invalidate the order ? Although, I’m sure, I’ll end up gagging at the refusal of the Justice Dept. to fully enforce civil rights violations against the Black Muslim.
Funny, he asked for the entire context, not some new truncation of the quote. Did you even bother to click through your own link??
Isn’t it painfully obvious that this was a denunciation of “false” ideas, along the lines of otherwise-good-people-given-into-temptation, and NOT perjoratively calling them THE anti-christ?
When people used to rant that newfangled rock music was “the work of the devil,” did you honestly believe they thought the musician was the devil himself?
No, because such a misrepresentation of the quote would be intellectually dishonest, as it is now. The truncated quote, is not the full quote, is not the full context.
I wonder if David Letterman would think it funny? Contessa Brewer?
Just askin’…..
Does anyone know the name of the guard who shot Von Brunn? He should also be remembered and honored. He’s the one who prevented a massacre.
To the MSM, the shooter will always be a “right wing” extremist. An example of a non-partisan loony would be the Unabomber or an Earth Liberation Front terrorist. They’re never political.
Nazi…Democratic Socialist Party, NOT Conservative/Republican Capitalist Party.
And just whom did the Progressive Democrats have a love affair with prior to WWII? That would be their idol, the Fascist, “Il Duce” Benito Mussolini.
The Civil War was fought over slavery; Southern Democrats were for it, and the Northern capitalists rejected it.
Equal Rights Amendment; um, passed by those “evil” Republican capitalists, while the Southern Democrats railed against it.
The left’s other champion of democracy, FDR, knew what was going on in the Nazi concentration camps, as did Stalin, but there is no record, as far as I know, that he tried to hasten the liberation of those death camps. Stalin was content to allow the SS to take care of those whom he felt were not worthy of life.
And yes, Von A-hole was indeed a nut job, and was responsible for his own actions.
Funny though, how conservatives believe in personal responsibility, compared to the liberals belief in the victim hood of the perpetrator….
Will there be new “Hate Crime” legislation because of this? Probably not…the targeted assemblage was undoubtedly sympathetic to the plight of the Jews. Although considered “dark skinned” by the Nazi’s, they just aren’t dark enough for the Obamination Administration.
I’m sure they’ll try to find a way to blame W, even though Von COO-COO had his first shooting episode in 1981…and that was on Jim-may’s watch, no?
The last time I checked, we conservatives were Israel’s best friends. How can this guy be labeled a “right wing extremist”? He was a “nut extremist”.
No..you aren’t that sane or playing fair…If he weren’t “right” you would have accused him to be “left”…May be he is from Numbersusa or something similar so you are having to make such statements.
Gee…And, maybe, he’s from the KKK democratic party…so, what ?
I suppose, Black Muslims killing soldiers in america are less worthy than abortion doctors too ?
Why has Obummer told the fbi to ignore black muslim radicals ? Crickets….
Maybe. Maybe he’s from MoveOn.org, or 911Truth.org. But you still haven’t produced any FACTS. Just more accusatory, because it feels good for you, typical liberal BS.
Here’s the plain and simple: Produce evidence (and not the hocus BS that TPM and HuffPo is pulling a “journalism”) and include it in your post, or shut the hell up!
BTW, here’s mine (emphasis also mine):
So hatred and bigotry are okay if your “people” were persecuted? That should cover just about everyone on the planet.
I’m with ya brother. I friggin hate all those silly libruls with their rank, unsubstantiated speculation. It makes me sick and I am so glad you have taken it upon yourself to impartially and mercilessly call out those poseurs that engage in such typical liberal BS.
My prayers are with the slain security guard’s family.
This is a terrible senseless tragedy!
This is a heart-breaking story, but because the gunman is an anti-Semite bigot I’m sure the MSM will give it more air-time than a home-grown terrorist killing a soldier in cold blood. According to the liberal MSM ~ There’s nothing newsworthy to see here folks. A doc who killed 60,000 children is MUCH more important. We all know he’s a martyr now! DISGUSTING!
Chap, there’s no impartiality about it. Islam is evil and Christianity is good. Jesus is gonna open a big can of whip ass on them someday.
The scary thing is that if abortion had been as freely available in the 50s and 60s, many of us would have not been born. I, for one, am so glad that it was delayed. I’m sure my children are, too!
Sorry. I believe you somehow mistook my post for one making a comparison between Christianity and Islam and me for someone that gives a crap about either religion.
You tell ‘em, chappy, What sort of crazy people would hear about an attack on Jews and jump to the conclusion that the perps were Muslims?
I know you got the sarcasm, I just need to spell it out for the benefit of others here.
/sarc
Chap,
Guess what? I maneuvered you into saying that. I just wanted to see if I could do it.
Chaps:
Your post are decidedly nastier than I am used to from you.
Is it unreasonable for me to post a reminder on this thread of a largely over-looked story of Islamic terrorism? I often do post topical but off-topic bits here.
Is is any less reasonable for posters here to speculate as to the antecedents of the killer guilty of today’s crimes than those on Hufferpro or Kos?
And, given this killer’s proclivities, is he not allied in his hatred of the selfsame people with our Islamic enemies? He would kill Jews and Christians with the same abandon as would they, would he not…did he not?
Chap,
You are very sharp and prolific. I do sense that you care more about truth than giving yourself blindly to one cause or the other. I respect that. As far as I’m concerned, your opinion carries weight on this blog. You really challenge others to think about their positions. Keep it up!
How come this guy is a “right-wing extremist” and Bill Ayers is “just a guy in the neighborhood”?
Say no more
hic… I’m for that.
p.s. I love you all more than the universe… (a favorite quote from my inebriated sister)
Do you notice that people who claim to be anti religion always end up in arguments bringing up the crusades and how evil christianity is and defend islam? Everyone who says they don’t care about organized religion always bring this up to me.
I also saw on Huff&Puff that the guy is an anti semite so he is right winger. If I hated the Jews so much, I would be a left winger. It is weird, they have disdain for someone who is a racist anti-semite crazy guy so they can rail against “right wingers”, however will scream for the complete destruction of Israel because the country had the nerve to defend itself against rocket attacks or recognize the danger of an Iran that possesses nukes. No one seems to have the hate the Jews play down more than the lefties. That actually includes many Jewish Americans, however one I know who voted for Obama now says it was a mistake since he thinks now it is a disaster for Israel, I agree.
Rags, you must still be pretty new. Chaps has a habit of getting nasty then try to cover it up. Aside from wasting a lot of posting time talking about his favorite foods or drinks or clothes or whatever, I mean a lot of posts wasted that you have to wade through if you are looking to read comments, he is a typical liberal, he thinks of nothing of telling other posters how stupid they are. I noticed though, since you have been around and took him to school on litigation and proper argument techniques in front of a jury, he does not seem to try to show us all how lawyerly he is anymore.
Rags, My post was not meant to disparage you or Misscheryl or anyone else who was speculating early on about the identity of the shooter. By all means, speculate away. But lets not pretend it was anything other than that. I just get annoyed when people get all high and mighty (as crashemt did) when the liberals here do it.
At the risk of proving frontierguy’s little dig at me below correct, I will issue one caveat/correction. When I said I did not care about either Christianity or Islam, I was speaking from a theological and metaphysical sense. I find them both equally invalid. However, no doubt that as a societal force, Islam is today much more destructive and detrimental to peace.
Ask Wareagle or atheling or any number of a handful of posters around here if I try to cover up my nastiness toward them.
Clearly you missed the nice little conversation Rags and I recently had regarding GM dealerships and contract law.
Um, the phrase “does not exclude” is leeway.
And while the Church did not support the Iraq war, it was not official teaching that we too oppose it. Unlike abortion and contraception, which are absolute official teachings.
Hi Chap – I wondered where you were. Good point and in the same vein – people are just people. Nature is what it is and when it comes down to it, both sides do what they accuse the other of doing (you and I included) and both sides believe their cause is more just. Bottom line is, people are just a shadow of what we were created to be. Our little weaknesses and passions keep us down. We are slaves to them.
I’ve witnessed as many others have, Hilton calling Miss California viscious names because she didn’t believe the way he does, but don’t even think of calling him a perverted fag. I’ve seen Christians condemn and judge (myself included) others while we are taught over and over that’s not our job…..we are all just people, no more and no less.
And, via What’s Wrong with the World, this nut-job was also vehemently anti-Christian (which kind of dispels the notion that Christians are anti-Semitic, because then this nutter would have loved us). From some of his crazy ramblings:
I agree with Kathy Shaidle:
The more I read about this guy, the more I think he would fit right into huffpo and the dailykos rather than here.
“make a waffle…”
Seems to me Chris Matthews is not having ANY trouble finding the waffles.
Nutcases. Daily Kos. All of them.
Some thoughts about this liberal hater, and spark thrower:
1) He can make the above kind of statement because he has,
a) bought a gun recently
(which would tend to confirm his hypocrisy)
b) recently bought a gun illegally, off the street.
c) waffles seem to be the favorite breakfast of progressives (you are what you eat.)
You just knew the left couldn’t resist blaming guns for this crime. These fascists have many tools, and this blowhard leads the pack.
