Iran photo of the day: Soccer team shows solidarity

Members of Iran’s national soccer team wore green arm and wrist bands Wednesday during their World Cup qualifying match against South Korea.
Green has become the color associated with supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi, who lost Friday’s election to incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a vote many Iranians believe were rigged by the authorities. Since the election results were announced Saturday, the country has been in turmoil.
It has not been confirmed, however, whether the green bands worn by the soccer team were intended as a protest against the disputed election results, CNN reported.
The players took the wrist bands off when the team came out for the second half of the game that was taking place in Seoul.
During and before the match, dozens of Iranian supporters staged a protest to condemn the election results.
They unfurled a banner that read, “Go To Hell Dictator,” and chanted, “Compatriots, we will be with you to the end with the same heart,” at the protest outside the stadium.
During the match, protesters displayed the banner, held up green paper signs reading “Where is my vote?” and waved Iran’s national flags with “Free Iran” on them.

That takes nerves of steel.
Most protesters are pretty darned anonymous, these guys are out there and well known if they’re soccer stars. Wonder if a little conversation with the Revolutionary Guard will be in order.
I would forgive Obama a little if he would come out wearing a green tie today.
Obama is silent on Iran because he knows that nothing can muck up a dictators plan more, than a little liberty. I believe he has emptahy for Ahmadinnerjacket.
Those are often fatal and these guys fame might protect them. Look at thier wives and kids.
May God bless the Iranians, brave souls that they are, I fear for thier safety. I’m waiting for the same thing to happen here.
Looks like they discussed more than soccer during half time.
I wonder if ACRON sent someone over there to learn how to declare a winner an hour after the polls close.
Pelosi, Reid, and Obama did likely view these Iranian protesters the same way they looked at the TEA protests. They are afraid of them.
Standing up to voice support for a democratic movement in Iran is not part of their agenda. They are ideologically with Khameini, Kim Jong, and Chavez. They may say something eventually out of fear, but don’t expect much enthusiasm from our elected donkeys.
awesome.
Seems odd how the ankle biters in both Iran and North Korea have come out of the boxes President Bush had them contained in at full gnaw since Obama assumed office. I think it says a lot about how America’s enemies view Obama’s world “leadership” skills.
Now if our coward in Chief would.
We knew Reagan and he ain’t no Reagan.
I can imagine the little talk at half time. “We have your wife and children in custody, they are on the way to the rape rooms”….
Obama is smart to stay out of it.
They’re falling apart on their own. It’s best just to stand aside and let the Persians work their own internal problems out.
Like I said in another thread, I saw an Iranian author on BookTV. He said a big part of the reason that revolution was so long in coming was that they were simply afraid that we’d jump in and “help.”
I heard Obama wants to have tea with Ahmadinejad. My guess is he wants to take notes.
BHO must go with Ahmaidiot… time is now… BHO is silent knowing he is next. Take heed BHO. Your time is short lived.
How is that different from normal CNN fare ???
CNN sees the Tea Parties with the same “objective” journalistic lenses as the Iranian protesters. /sarc
Seriously, my prayers are with the Iranian people.
Reminds me of Carter’s admin. and the Iranian hostage crisis. Hmmm…within minutes of Reagan’s inauguration, our fellow Americans were released.
Terrorist know and fear a “real” leader!
It’s strange that some atheletes are more courageous than the “Most Powerful Man in the World.”
I don’t understand the worry about Iran claiming a winner two hours after the polls closed. Right here the MSM gives us a winner two hours before the polls close. Next election they will give us the winners before the polls open!
I’m not sure there’s a whole heckuva lot of difference between Iran with Ahmanutjob as the figure head, or Moussavi, since it’s the mullahs that wield the real power. But, the Iranian people are showing their contempt for the rigged system they’re stuck with. For that, they have my prayers. I’ll be wearing green for a while.
No real difference since both were picked by the mullahs to run. Thats thier brand of “democracy”. This ultra-fanatical nutjob or the other one.
I’ll be wearing my Green shirt at our next Tea Party in July.
Sadly the Iranian Soccer team has bigger cajones than the KBPOTUS.

“Dissent is Patriotic-hrc”
The Iranian resistance are brave people.I pray for their success in their fight for freedom of theocracy and sharia law. It appears President Bush’s attempt to bring democracy to the Middle East has awakened a sleeping giant.
Obama needs to find a spine.
Not sure if any conservative bloggers are on this yet but it looks like Iran is at the photoshopping again …

“Looks like they discussed more than soccer during half time.”
Maybe, walterc. Perhaps some govt goons gave them a lesson on the proper way to kick balls around.
Note to the RNC:
When people love liberty so much they will stand by their principles steadfast in the face of ridicule and intimidation, anything is possible.
I happen to agree with those that think the president should keep quiet right now, at least publicly.
Amendinijad is a soccer fan himself. Back in 2006 there was an issue in that he wanted to go to Germany for the World Cup. The German government did not want him to go, but the neo-Nazi NPD offered to welcome him (IIRC, Iran played in one of the states where the NPD had representation in the state parliament).
Soccer is a big thing in Iran. A few years back the regime got worried because soccer crowds started chanting anti-regime slogans during games (soccer stadia are the one place in Iran where people can assemble in large numbers legally).
Because uppity Iranian women seemed to be starting the chanting, the regime at one point banned women from soccer games. They claimed it was for their own protection, as soccer crowds have a tendancy to get a bit “fluent” in their language during games. The regime said that women would be allowed back in after the stadia were “cleaned up”.
“We must all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately”.
One other thing. I was in France for the 1998 World Cup and attended the US-Iran debacle (fire Sampson!)
When entering the stadium. the French police checked our banners to make sure there were no “political” banners. I understand that many Iranian ex-pats who entered the game had banners taken away.
Some apparently were as inocuous as the alternative Iranian flag, which has the winged syphix instead of the current emblem. It is connected both to Oranian nationalists and monarchists.
good show.
I’m wearing green today, too.
