[...] At least five Iranian football players wore green bands around their wrists or arms during a World Cup qualifying match against South Korea on Wednesday in an apparent protest against a disputed election at home, according to the Jerusalem post: The players, including captain Mehdi Mahdavikia, wore green – the signature color of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi – in an apparent show of support. Protesters at home who accuse the government of rigging Iran’s June 12 election in favor of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have been wearing similar green wristbands.
One other thing. I was in France for the 1998 World Cup and attended the US-Iran debacle (fire Sampson!)

When entering the stadium. the French police checked our banners to make sure there were no "political" banners. I understand that many Iranian ex-pats who entered the game had banners taken away.

Some apparently were as inocuous as the alternative Iranian flag, which has the winged syphix instead of the current emblem. It is connected both to Oranian nationalists and monarchists.

I happen to agree with those that think the president should keep quiet right now, at least publicly.

Amendinijad is a soccer fan himself. Back in 2006 there was an issue in that he wanted to go to Germany for the World Cup. The German government did not want him to go, but the neo-Nazi NPD offered to welcome him (IIRC, Iran played in one of the states where the NPD had representation in the state parliament).

Soccer is a big thing in Iran. A few years back the regime got worried because soccer crowds started chanting anti-regime slogans during games (soccer stadia are the one place in Iran where people can assemble in large numbers legally).

Because uppity Iranian women seemed to be starting the chanting, the regime at one point banned women from soccer games. They claimed it was for their own protection, as soccer crowds have a tendancy to get a bit "fluent" in their language during games. The regime said that women would be allowed back in after the stadia were "cleaned up".

"Looks like they discussed more than soccer during half time."

Maybe, walterc. Perhaps some govt goons gave them a lesson on the proper way to kick balls around.

The Iranian resistance are brave people.I pray for their success in their fight for freedom of theocracy and sharia law. It appears President Bush's attempt to bring democracy to the Middle East has awakened a sleeping giant.

Obama needs to find a spine.

I'll be wearing my Green shirt at our next Tea Party in July.

Sadly the Iranian Soccer team has bigger cajones than the KBPOTUS.

I'm not sure there's a whole heckuva lot of difference between Iran with Ahmanutjob as the figure head, or Moussavi, since it's the mullahs that wield the real power. But, the Iranian people are showing their contempt for the rigged system they're stuck with. For that, they have my prayers. I'll be wearing green for a while.
