More proof of why we shouldn’t want government run healthcare:

PHILADELPHIA — A newspaper says a common surgical procedure for the treatment of prostate cancer was botched at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia 79 percent of the time.

The New York Times says a team that performed the procedure using radiation botched it on 92 of 116 occasions over more than six years. The paper says the team continued the treatment for a year even though the equipment that measured whether patients received the proper radiation dose was broken.

A federal commission announced last fall that an inspection at the hospital was under way partly because of the number of patients given incorrect radiation doses. The medical center suspended its prostate cancer treatment program as a result of the ongoing probe and the doctor chiefly responsible for the mistakes no longer works there.

Since most sermons today will focus on barbecues, football, and “Cats in the Cradle”:
“Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.” ~Proverbs 19:18
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” ~Ephesians 6:4
“These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. Hear, O Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, promised you.
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” ~Deuteronomy 6:1-9
Here’s an appropriate sermon for today.
Thank you, God, for men like Abraham and Solomon, and other great fathers of the past.

The Hoyt story is flat out amazing. If you haven’t seen more than just this video there are some where you can see the son smiling and laughing and absolutely enjoying himself. I’m sure those moments make all the other moments of work and effort totally worthwhile.

Makes one’s own efforts at being a dad pale by comparison hey?

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” (Mark Twain)

How true that was of my Dad and me. As I grew older, the closer we became, especially after Mom passed away. In the end, we were best friends. He’s gone now, but never forgotten. I remember the last time I saw him. I had to leave his hospital room; I stopped, turned around and we looked at each other for a moment. Both of us knew it would be the last time we would see each other. I miss his wisdom and guidance. And, yes, he did whip me when I screwed up. I didn’t suffer any emotional scars or problems. I just did better. Happy Fathers’ Day, Dad!

Happy Father’s Day to all. And to all of us father’s trying to raise a special needs child, I offer this Bible verse:

    John 9
Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind
1As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
3″Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.

As I watch the Iranian people protest their government I feel a sense of loss. I feel that they have an opportunity that we may never have again simply because we will never collectively have the passion to get out in the streets and protest en mass against the aristocracy of our government. The same aristocracy that was so despised that it brought forth our nation and it’s constitution.

So I salute these young Iranians and I wish them luck in their quest for FREEDOM!
