Obamacare ground troops at the airport

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 22, 2009 02:37 PM

I’m at Denver International Airport waiting to pick up family.

In Terminal East, I was accosted by two young people from an outfit called “Progressive Future.” They are standing with clipboards and propaganda pimping Obamacare.

Don’t have time right now to look them up, but I asked one of the young Obama-bots who funded his group.

He didn’t know.

Wouldn’t be surprised if stimulus dollars or AmeriCorps funding was subsidizing this.

The young man handed me a flyer using “right-wing Republicans in Congress,” “Rush Limbaugh and Fox News” to scare the sheeple into support the government health care takeover.

On the one hand, it shows how organized the ground troops are.

On the other hand, can you think of a sillier place to engage citizens in a discussion of health care than in the middle of an airport with busy travelers rushing to and from their flights?

TAMPA, Fla. — Barack Obama on Monday promised this state hard-hit by foreclosures that he would halt them in their tracks while updating a famous Ronald Reagan line to criticize Republican handling of the nation’s deepening economic distress.
“At this rate, the question isn’t just ‘Are you better off than you were four years ago?’, it’s ‘Are you better off than you were four weeks ago?’” the Democratic presidential nominee asked a raucous crowd here of about 8,000.

Ah yes, DIA. . . ‘Doesn’t include Airport’.

That has become the most awesome airport in the country because it is the only new one we’ve built in 50 years. They were going to do everything state of the art and it took about 10 – 20 years longer than they projected. They were doing an automatic luggage sorter (that didn’t work).

But anyway, I’ve been there and it is an awesome place. It just took forever and is an example of the ineptness of government even when they are doing a good thing.

We took the kids to the grand celebration air show at DIA when they were little. Of course, since they were behind schedule, it took place a long time before they opened. But it was a fantastic show – Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, Canadian Snow Birds, etc. I think it was the first time a Stealth Fighter was displayed.

And having recently traveled to Europe, and previously traveled elsewhere in the US, DIA is a pretty pleasant place. Spacious, clean (FREE!) restrooms, easy transporation, food (Charles De Gaulle – no food near gates!), etc. The only drawback is that it’s practically in Kansas. Stapleton was much more convenient.

I remember going to Stapleton when I was a kid. They had an open air observation area on the roof and pay toilets – $.10. As kids, we would crawl under the stall door.

In my experience, the costs go up as soon as you introduce government and government regulation into the mix. The HIPAA regulations are a good example of this. A well intentioned attempt to ensure privacy that was supposed to cost 8 dollars or there abouts per clinic now costs tens of thousands per year plus hundreds of hours per clinic per year. You have to understand where I am coming from. I was born in New Zealand and had to use the health care system down there with very mixed results. I then moved here where I served 5 years active army and then worked for 10 years as a medical software programer. So I have had experience in government and the medical area. I know personaly of what the draw backs of socialist medicine is. Thats what obama and you want, lets be honest about it.
Again, socialist medicine is not the end of the world. It ends up being a different way of rationing health care just like the current situation does. Usualy everyone is at least seen. If they don’t walk out first. But you end up with waiting list where the politicaly contected somehow are always on top. You also often end up with a private medical system along side it where people who are desperate enough or wealthy enough go to. This is where the best doctors usualy try to go because you are not on government controled pay scales. This is what happened in New Zealand and New Zealand actualy has a growing private insurance industry.
Here are some real world examples from down under.
-My grandmother waited 2 years for a replacement hip.
-My surgeon almost killed me on the table and removed organs that he didn’t have to. (paid by the procedure)
-Waiting list for heart surgery is now 69 days.
-You can not sue the doctors because you are esentualy suing the government and that would bankrupt the country.

So in conclusion, If we are going to go down this road, and we probably will since your side doesn’t want to listen to anyone, then lets at least walk with open eyes and not just stumble into this.

Thanks for taking the time to engage. I think this is one of those issues on which we have to invest—spend money in the short term to save money in the long term. I’m less concerned about the cost than you are primarily because I believe (as does President Obama) that the cost of inaction is actually much higher. So, we’ll spend the money either way—the question is whether we spend it deliberately and intelligently, or wastefully because we don’t have the political will to reform our system.

To be fair, I should tell you where I am coming from since you didn’t immediately condem me as a racist, hate filled bigot, you might actualy be worth talking to.

I do not oppose government run healthcare per say, but I want the entire cost and all the down sides openly discussed and advertised because what I have seen so far will bankrupt this country. It can’t work for long the way they are pushing it now. This is one of those things that needs to be all socialist or all private. The mix usualy fails in a spectacular fashion. I can not support the proposed system based on my first hand knowlegde of how this stuff works and the lack of information being put out. The one simple question that has not been fully answered that over-rides the rest is how will it be paid for?
