Red State Skeptic said:
I say beggars can’t be choosers. And as voters, we are begging for politicians who are worth a damn to do their job. I think we can all agree that Rudy Giuliani, for example, was a great politician, and it would be a crying shame if the city of New York was deprived of his service because of what he had going on in his bedroom.

While you make the point that politicians aren't "perfect" I find your trotting out conservatives expecting "perfection" a little disingenuous. We all live in the real world. However, aren't you just a bit tired of all the liars, schemers, cheaters, fraudsters, exploiters of both political parties? The problem with both parties these days is TRUST. I want politicians to do their jobs but when they're entangled in all matter of affairs such as recent governers, the mayor of LA, and Clinton, it erodes constituents' trust and sense that these politicians don't really give a damn for anybody else but themselves.

While I like Giuliani, and value the hard work he put in cleaning up NYC, he's done some not quite honest, above-board things that would engender trust in a potential constituent. He's not the most "faithful" type- just ask his first wife. As a NY voter, the state is in turmoil and has been for years because a lot of these politicians are not living in the real world. They only pretend they do.

It’s incredible that conservatives have this litany of orthodoxy where not only do you have to be anti-tax, pro-life, pro-death penalty, pro-school choice, pro-war, anti-regulation, anti-gay, anti-welfare, and all the rest — but you also have to be a boy scout! You would have an easier time finding people who drive minivans, smoke parliaments, and wear blue on Tuesdays than you would finding an elected official who meets your “true conservative” test.

There are all types of conservatives and the conservative movement is a lot more complex and diverse than the right-wing bigotry you often portray. How often do Dems apply orthodoxy to get people to faithfully trot along? How many Dems posed as moderates or even conservatives but cave and never stand up for things they alleged in their campaign such as Sen. Casey's pro-life position, or those blue-dog Dem fiscal warriors?

You see, all politicians say one thing and yet never follow through on their campaign "pledges." Is that what we seek in public servants now? How good you can run a campaign and make a slick speech only to dissolve into a puddle of mush when you're too weak to stand up and give a damn?

The true "conservative" test is the following:

SAY WHAT YOU MEAN AND MEAN WHAT YOU SAY.

That's it. There's no a), b), or c) answers. I can't believe that so many people like you are so willing to lower the bar in politicians that even marriage vows have no meaning. Even campaign "promises" ring hollow now. When politicians can't even lead by example such as the President who can't seem to kick his nicotine habit but demands that all Americans must make sacrifices in their healthcare, it just rings a bit hollow to me.

You don't have to be a "boy scout" to be a politician but you can't be a dirtbag either. The military needs strong leaders and if those leaders don't lead by example, morale breaks down. That's why when bad apples get found they're usually drummed out or carted off to Fort Levenworth. Better yet, if military members cheat on their spouses they can be drummed out of the military. It still applies.

And it should apply to politicians of ALL POLITICAL PERSUASIONS. That is why there is an HONOR CODE in the military academies and the different branches of the military. If you steal, lie, cheat, or commit a crime you can't remain in the military.

Nor should you remain in political office doing the very same things.

These bad apples make it harder for republicans to talk about values. In fact that's precisely why democrats make such a big deal about it when a republican's involved -- well that and their perverse enjoyment of kicking people when they're down. But the democrats have an even bigger problem to overcome than republicans do in the next election: the "tax and spend" label their party can't shake.

In the past they have sometimes admitted to the tax and spend label, like when Mondale campaigned on a promise to raise taxes. At other times they have promised to raise taxes only on the rich and give everyone else a tax break. Clinton and Obama both made that pledge while campaigning. But we found out very quickly that their fingers were crossed behind their backs when they made that promise.

It is easier to keep a pig out of the mud than it is to keep a democrat from raising taxes and increasing spending. They just can't help themselves. I'm curious to see how democrats defend their behavior when the next election comes up. I'm absolutely sure what one of their excuses will be: "We had to do it to save the planet from all the problems we inherited from Bush...". But that still won't explain why things got worse.

Like what I wrote yesterday:

If Gov. Sanford was a Democrat an affair would be great news, since he’s a Republican its a career ender, this just means lefties can’t get any and righties get too much.

Speakup on June 24, 2009 at 6:10 PM

Its a gig aimed at libs, so vehement in their hypocrisy.
More fed up with the piling on than a joke.
I do feel empathy for Sanfords family, him..none, it seems though that no matter how punishing the consequences, it keeps happening and left right north south, moral set, doesn't seem to make much difference.
Doesn't mean we can't expect better though and the anger is sure understandable.
I've had, like lots of folks, plenty of it.

Maybe its my fault.

Ilovemycountry, WOW, way to confirm your racist, bigoted nature. I was joking before, but now I am simply in awe of your blind hatred. A KKK grand dragon could not have produced a better statement filled with generalizations and racist hatred. You truely have earned the title of the most hated filled, bigoted, irrational post of the day.

Congratulations!!! Your mother would spit on you in disgust.

[...] Malkin finds the lefty Sanford yuks in bad taste. I dunno, let them have their fun. No party has a monoploy on moral lapses, hypocrisy. My favorite one came up today when some feminist caller on NPR was yapping on about the male patriarchal abuse of power blah blah blah, and a guest brought up Bill Clinton, a somewhat more relevant example.
