Dear Mark Sanford: Buy a one-way ticket to Argentina already and be gone

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 30, 2009 11:54 AM

I am getting almost as sick and tired of the never-ending Sanford circus as I am of the never-ending Jacko circus.

The mistress says she’s “hurt.”

The adulterous governor can’t stop yammering about God and the Bible.

And now there’s more sex, lies, and tears:

In a lengthy, emotional interview with The Associated Press, the governor described seven meetings with the woman, including their first in 2001. Sanford says there have been five over a 12-month period, including two multi-night stays with her in New York.

It was the first disclosure of any get-togethers with her in the United States and contradicted a public confession last week during which he admitted to a total of four encounters in the past year.

I found this passage in Cheaty McCheater’s latest online apology most stomach-turning:

So in the aftermath of this failure I want to not only apologize, but to commit to growing personally and spiritually. Immediately after all this unfolded last week I had thought I would resign – as I believe in the military model of leadership and when trust of any form is broken one lays down the sword. A long list of close friends have suggested otherwise – that for God to really work in my life I shouldn’t be getting off so lightly. While it would be personally easier to exit stage left, their point has been that my larger sin was the sin of pride. They contended that in many instances I may well have held the right position on limited government, spending or taxes – but that if my spirit wasn’t right in the presentation of those ideas to people in the General Assembly, or elsewhere, I could elicit the response that I had at many times indeed gotten from other state leaders.

Their belief was that if I walked in with a real spirit of humility then this last legislative term could well be our most productive one – and that outside this term, I would ultimately be a better person and of more service in whatever doors God opened next in life if I stuck around to learn lessons rather than running and hiding down at the farm.

They have also made the point that a good part of life is about scripts – that the idea of redemption isn’t something that Marshall, Landon, Bolton and Blake should just read about, it’s something they should see. Accordingly, they suggested that there was a very different life script that would be lived and learned by our boys, and thousands like them, if this story simply ended with scandal and then the end of office – versus a fall from grace and then renewal and rebuilding and growth in its aftermath.

He claims the best thing he can do for his boys is spend more time away from them trying to salvage his political career.

He wasn’t thinking of his boys’ best interests on Father’s Day weekend or over the past eight years. And he isn’t thinking of their best interests now.

So, go buy a one-way ticket to Argentina already, Gov. Sanford, and spare us all the continued spectacle and ready-for-prime-time agony.

***

What’s next: Mark Sanford bawling on Dr. Phil? Touring his NYC love nests w/Tyra Banks? Self-flagellating on The View?

Enough already.

    Yes, Sanford must go.

That he doesn’t get this reveals more about his ego, and the echo chamber he’s living in.

Not sure if a one-way ticket to Argentina would help – I do believe people can grow and change – but most people are not strong enough to grow and change in the intense glare of media scrutiny.

Mark Sanford is just another distraction. He is but one little fish in a ocean filled with predators. He has been singled out, separated from the safety of the school, and is now dinner. Let’s move along, and do what’s in the best interest of the school.

    The only lesson some would-be conservatives need to learn, but apparently haven’t, is;

Stray from the safety of conservative principles at your own risk. Don’t expect others to follow you into the mouths of sharks, or pity you for your self-inflicted lapse of intelligence. The integrity of the conservative value system is more important that one little fish.

Further discussion of Mark Sanford, in my view, borders on gossip. Can we please focus?

But Obama’s tax and trade legislation, which passed the House while you distracted away our attention with this Sanford soap opera and the Jackson family’s private loss, has that power.

How about if you guys in the MSM tried bringing us some real news for a change?

For starters, how about investigating the Cap and Tax bill – which just passed the House w/o even being read – and the affect it will have in raising both prices and unemployment? How about the fact that Obama’s health care plan will limit treatment-/coverage to the young and healthy and take away our choices? How the fact that Obama and the Democrats have increased the both the debt and deficit to astronomical highs and have no plans to bring spending under control?

The news is out there – if you guys in the media would stop self-censoring yourselves in support of the Obama agenda long enough to report it!

I am of the understanding his people did not know where he was. It doesn’t matter if there is a Lt. Governor there, if there was a natural disaster, there would be time spend looking for the governor before the Lt. Gov. could step up and assume the duties of the governor. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it wouldn’t take an act of the lege or a court order to appoint the Lt. Gov. as acting governor, and I doubt anyone below the rank of governor could call out the National Guard or declare a state of emergency.

What makes you think Sanford had the TV or his cell phone on when he was on his tryst.

Yes, a man who cheats on his wife can’t be trusted, but he abandoned his station.

If he directed state workers, such as his security detail, to take him to the airport and not disclose that fact, he may have been guilty of a crime. If he used a state vehicle to go to the airport, or a state computer to arrange his personal tryst, he may also face criminal charges for misuse of state equipment.

He should resign, and if he doesn’t, he may have criminal liabilities, and even if he doesn’t, he deserves impeachment.

Actually, Crist may be helping Floridians who live in hurricane prone areas by allowing the state to re-insure hurricane losses at rates far below what is neccesary based on the risk.

The big one hits, the state fund quickly goes broke, and if Obama thinks it will turn a toss-up state solidly Demonratic, expect the taxpayers of the other 49 states to make up the difference. All the coastal residents are made whole, paying way below what they should have for insurance.

Crist is governing as a Democrat already, if you think about it. He has pre-Federalized private disaster insurance in Florida.

It’s not Michelle’s place to forgive him, his sin is against his wife, children and perhaps the people of SC.

Michelle I think correctly points out that his actions call into question his integrity, voracity and character. If these things are not important for a public official, then there is no problem. I happen to believe they are.

Genuine repententance plays itself out in actions over time. Talk is cheap. I think resigning is not the issue, it’s whether he sincerely tries to reconcile his marriage and do the right thing for his children. Time will tell.

Does your version of the Lord’s Prayer omit that line?

He did nothing to Michelle to need her forgiveness. She can ignore him or have an opinion and she chose to give her opinion.

Forgiveness comes from the Creator and is given in abundance through His Son.

The idea that keeping his position after not laying down his sword (falling on it would have been preferable) is somehow God led is a joke at best. He talks about humility and, then, talks about what a great work he can do if he sticks it out. PLEASE!!! If he were concerned about making things right with God, he would step down and make more time for God and family. God can help him get back on the right path. To continue on the same path that led to his destruction is futile.

Oh, and being “Christian” does not mean we cannot call a sin a sin. Sure we should not cast the stone. Nor should he have stoned his family in the horrifying manner in which he did.

We are called to go and sin no more. If this person can do that, he has found repentance. NOTHING in his diddy showed any sign of repentance. It was a letter to let everyone know he will not step down – even for the good of the many.

I know it backwards and forwards. He did not trespass against me. He stomped on his family and said it unfolded over the last week when it had been unfolding for months. After crushing his family, he should put them first. Not going to happen. No repentance which, by the way, IS what the Word is about.

Your link gives the example of Letter(wo)man and Palin. Palin has always been about class. She was harmed and Dave’s non-apology apology was his worst joke yet. She forgave him. Good on her. I wouldn’t give Dave the time of day and you know something – I do not have to. Dave should seek forgiveness from the Creator and leave the joke telling to professionals.

So far, all we hear from Sanford is talk. And the sincerity is questionable. I would know he had character if he confessed this before being caught, and offered to reimburse the state for his bimbo vacation before it became public. Now his character, veracity and integrity (not to mention his sanity) are justifiably, if not necessarily called into question. That is not condemnation. Though I agree completely with his policies, if I lived in SC I would forgive him AND call for his resignation.

There is no such thing as a free sin. Don’t you get that basic principle? Or was that only for Adam and Eve, and Jesus lets us sin freely that grace might abound? (I think you think forgiveness means erasing all consequences, and that there can be no “discipline” or reaping or “reward.” But if you are without discipline, you are not a son.)

“Bring forth fruit in keeping with repentence.” Fruit doesn’t mean just words, or just tears, because even the worst tele-evangelists can do those things quite well, without repenting.

P.S. If he is in Christ, there is no condemnation (Romans 8:1). That doesn’t mean he is free to sin with no consequence.

    jright,
I agree that if Sanford asks for forgiveness from someone, then they should forgive him, and of course, he should ask sincerely, seek counseling to help overcome his character flaws, put in verifiable safeguards to avoid even the appearance of evil in order to rebuild trust.

However, there are consequences for his actions. The consequences of David’s adultery with Bathsheba and his murder of her husband, Uriah, during the cover up, were severe:

-death of his son born to Bathsheba
-the remainder of his life marked by violence
-betrayal by his son, Absalom, who attempted to take his father’s throne by murdering him. This includes a large part of David’s subjects and the military rebelling against him.
-a very public humiliation by Absalom when he slept with his father’s wives
-the death of his son Absalom
-disqualified from the privilege of building God’s Temple

I’m not saying that these type of things will happen to Mark Sanford, nor do I wish them upon him, but there will be severe consequences for his sinful behavior. Even David, when confronted by Nathan immediately acknowledged his wrongdoing. After Mark Sanford was confronted by his wife, he begged her to let him continue to see his lover! …not quite following David’s example.

J-Right, see previous post #69. MM has not called for his execution, imprisonment, resignation or impeachment. She has not condemned him. She is illustrating apparent flaws in his character, veracity, integrity (not to mention sanity). Forgiveness is not the issue. Forgiving someone for a trespass committed against a third party is meaningless. Again, if I lived in SC I would forgive him AND call for his resignation, based on his irresponsible behavior in office, i.e. using state funds for an affair and going AWOL without delegating authority or leaving a way to contact him.

Religion is one thing. Politics is another. The Republican party is in a fight for its own survival, and the future of our Country and our children and grandchildren. Sanford hurts the conservative movement by giving ammo to the demagogues in the Congress and the msm to mock historic conservative high ground on family values, and living a clean and moral life. That is something we do not need right now, as we try to reverse the catastrophic effects of liberal domination in the WH and the Congress, starting in 2010. I dont forgive him for that. Standford is being condemned by his actions and now his words. If I forgive him, will he respond to MY forgiveness? Will he care?

This is my final statement because as Bear says we need to move on:

Forgiving an unrepentant person is casting pearls before swine. THAT is my standard. We see here a man who has set his standard and will continue to do the same. Personally, if I screwed up that bad, I would NOT need you or Michelle to forgive me. I would need my family’s forgiveness and I would work my arse off to gain it (and pray it was an attainable goal). I would put aside the career that helped me sustain my infidelity. You would seek repentance. Standford’s statement was repugnant at best. He stole from his wife that which was not his to give and gave it to another woman – PERIOD. And if you do not think God will judge and not forgive, you do not know the difference between sheep and goats – chaff and wheat. So, if God will condemn and not forgive, seems like a standard to me.

If he sinned against MM readers in the comments, all he would have to do to receive our “forgiveness” (meaning the attitude of our heart) is to ask for it, even seventy-times-seven (Matt. 18:22). The reason for that is so that we can be forgiven (Matt. 6:12).
