Franken-fied: Make way for (another) clown; Update: Coleman statement added

By Michelle Malkin  •  June 30, 2009 02:22 PM

It’s official. The Senate gets another buffoon. Don’t worry, Al. Bozo the VP Joe Biden’s shoes won’t be that hard for you to fill:

It is U.S. Sen. Al Franken.

The Minnesota Supreme Court today decided that Franken, a Democrat, won the highest number of votes in last year’s U.S. Senate race and deserves a signed election certificate.

The court said that Republican Norm Coleman didn’t prove that a lower court made mistakes requiring a rehearing of the case. Coleman had asked the court to order thousands of rejected absentee ballots counted. He had hoped the counting would allow him to overcome Franken’s 312-vote lead.

The court’s decision brings to an end the seven-month state fight over the Minnesota Senate race. Franken has had a lead since January and a trial court decided in April that he won the highest number of legally cast votes.

Showtime!

Update:

A STATEMENT FROM SENATOR NORM COLEMAN

ST. PAUL – Senator Norm Coleman today made the following statement at his home in St. Paul:

“Ours is a government of laws, not men and women. The Supreme Court of Minnesota has spoken and I respect its decision and will abide by the result. It’s time for Minnesota to come together under the leaders it has chosen and move forward. I join all Minnesotans in congratulating our newest United States Senator – Al Franken.

“Just a few last words about my legal challenge. Sure, I wanted to win. Not just for myself but for my wonderful supporters and the important values I have always fought for. I also thought it was important to stand up for enfranchising thousands of Minnesotans whose votes weren’t counted like the others were. After all, issues and politicians come and go, but voting is fundamental.

“It is the essence of democracy so I knew we needed to do everything we could to get it right.

“I am forever grateful and humbled by the people of Minnesota who have given me the honor to represent them – and even more grateful for their wisdom, courage, patience and understanding over these past several months.

“The path that I take in the future is not nearly as important today as the path that we must now — all travel on together — to strengthen our state and our nation.

“I have never believed that my service is irreplaceable. We have reached the point where further litigation damages the unity of our state, which is also fundamental. In these tough times, we all need to focus on the future. And the future today is we have a new United States Senator.

“I congratulate Al Franken and his victory in this election. He now enjoys the advantage that our Congressional Delegation has over the other 525 people on Capitol Hill: he represents Minnesota.

“I know the great ideas, the amazing work ethic and the historic ability to come together to get things done in this state will help him greatly, as it has me.

“Speaking of which, I think we all should take a moment to thank Amy Klobuchar and her staff. They have done a great job of carrying the burden of two Senators these last six months. She is an extraordinary public servant.

“I don’t reach this point with any big regrets. I ran the campaign I wanted. I conducted the legal challenge I wanted. And I have always believed you do the best you can and leave the results up to a higher authority. I’m at peace with that. As to my future plans, that’s a subject for another day.

“We live in a great country and a great state. We can all have confidence that by some path we don’t yet know – one which we can all come together to lay out – we will arrive at the better future we all seek.

“Thank you and may God bless Minnesota and America.”

    Huh? who has made this claim?

    Look here.

    78.5% of eligible voters. Not over 100%. Now that doesn’t include registered voters, but MN has same day registration, and as you can see, the level of participation in this highly publicized election (both Senate and Presidential) is only slightly higher than the turnout for 2004.

    Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie predicts at least 80 percent of the state’s eligible voters will show up at the polls on Tuesday.

    What I recall that was questionable is that in a particular area where Franken didn’t have strong support, he gained votes on Coleman. I’d say at the very least, that is suspicious. I have yet to find the article that mentioned it though.

    And in many cases… they seemed to be finding votes for Franken, but little if any for Coleman.

    From HotAir:

    Just as Secretary of State Mark Ritchie was explaining to reporters the recount process in one of the narrowest elections in Minnesota history, an aide rushed in with news: Pine County’s Partridge Township had revised its vote total upward — another 100 votes for Democratic candidate Al Franken, putting him within .011 percentage points of Republican U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman.

    The reason for the change? Exhausted county officials had accidentally entered 24 for Franken instead of 124 when the county’s final votes were tallied at 5:25 Wednesday morning.

    Is this legitimate? A few precincts do not use the optical-scan ballot, and apparently Patridge Township is one of them. Leaving off a digit in a vote count can happen when tallying by hand. Still, as the days wore on this week, all of those “corrections” appeared to be going in a single direction — towards Franken.

    Hot off the press, the first apparent evidence of fraud. Last night at around 7:30, a precinct in Mountain Iron, St. Louis County, mysteriously updated its vote total to add 100 new votes–all 100 for Barack Obama and Al Franken.

    Mountain Iron uses optical scanning, so the Coleman campaign asked for a copy of the tape documenting the ballots cast on election night. St. Louis County responded by providing a tape that includes the newly-added 100 votes, and is dated November 2–the Sunday before the election. St. Louis County reportedly denies being able to produce the genuine tape from election night, even though Minnesota law, as I understand it, requires that tape to be signed by the election judges and publicly displayed.

    So I have my doubts as to the legitimacy of the re-worked vote tally.

    Re: the time stamp issue. Officials noticed the day of the election that the stamp was wrong, but they could not change it at that point. It was not, as Hot Air said, officials “denying” access to the actual tape. That was the actual tape with the wrong date.

    Re:

    That is just wrong. Plenty of times Coleman increased his lead during the recount. I recall in the days after the election following the Star Tribune’s running tally as precincts recounted and submitted their results. It was a roller coaster.

    Again, all these precincts had, for lack of a better term, sign in sheets. In every instance of “found votes”, such as in the example of the 124/24 votes, the revised vote totals correlated with the independently gathered voter tallies on the sign in.

    Minnesota has a system of “same day registration,” where you can show up, register, and vote on the spot. All you need is a school ID or even a utility bill or rental receipt, which are easy to fake (not that anyone will be checking). It’s a system ripe for abuse. It’s only too easy for out-of-state college students or a couple busloads of ACORN voters from Chicago to be parachuted into marginal precincts to up the vote for the Demonrats.

    HOW, in the name of all that is sane, did we come to this level of stupidity? If we lose the integrity of our elections, we lose everything! Apparently, we have all been sitting around with our heads in the sand (or elsewhere), just letting it all happen.

    Not true. A student ID is only valid if the school has presented a student housing list to election officials. And a utility bill only comes into play if you can also present one of the following:

    * Minnesota Driver’s License
    * Minnesota ID Card
    * United States Passport
    * United States Military ID Card
    * Tribal ID Card
    * Minnesota University, College, or Technical College ID Card

    Presumably this is for MN residents who HAVE VALID ID, but have recently moved to a new address.

    Yeah, chap like anyone is going to go back and check after the election. You know damn well they won’t. And most any form of ID on the list will be quite easy to fake.

    You also conveniently leave two other forms of “ID” off your list.

    - A voter registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with a signed oath
    - An employee of the residential facility where you live who can confirm your address with a signed oath

    I am sure your helpful local ACORN worker will be happy to provide such a signed oath.
