Outpouring of support for Dallas vet whose flags were torched

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 2, 2009 12:12 PM

They haven’t found the culprits yet who burned the U.S. and military flags of a former Marine in north Dallas this week.

But support and offers to replace the flags have poured in.

Avi Selk of the Dallas Morning News has the follow-up:

Our little story about a few front-porch flags that got burned in Far North Dallas has sparked a firestorm of attention since it ran on Tuesday.

The story, which my editor discovered from a single line in an obscure police report, (”UNK SUSP BURNED USA FLAG MOUNTED IN FRONT OF COMP RESIDENCE”) has also grabbed the attention of nearly every TV station in Dallas and the Associated Press. It’s also made the rounds on Twitter and caught the eye of conservative blogger Michelle Malkin.

Since writing the article, I’ve been contacted by soldiers, civilians, a flag manufacturer and the agent for Kid Rock — all of whom want to help replace the burned flags. An Army veteran offered up an American flag he said had been flown over several camps and bases in Iraq.

No need. The North Dallas area is full of little rich b!tches (of all genders) who suck off their parents and chant radical collectivist crap in their air-conditioned mansions. They would be capable of this kind of outrage.

This would be a wonderful replacement (even though it would be from the Army) for this former US Marine. It would be really nice to establish an around the clock ambush for the little sociopaths that burned this man’s property and the symbols of those that have served and sacrifice for this nation should they try it again. A good sound beating just might teach them to respect another person’s property.

Here in my ultra-liberal, condescending college town, no one was flying a flag except we small majority of conservatives and veterans. Then 9/11 came and demand for flags skyrocketed. People began stealing flags from homes because they were no longer available in stores. Then the people who used to fly flags were the ones who didn’t. Not gonna let some commie punk steal my flag. They wouldn’t have been caught dead with one a week before.

He seems to defend the flag and the Country when he’s confronted with a situation like this. Where he stands on other issues, I’m not sure. But he does seem to have a patriotic streak running through him. I say good for him if that’s true. Maybe some of his fans will see that and emulate it.

I agree. Not only do the liberals teach nothing in regard to our proud history that our flag represents, they intentionally teach kids ‘reasons’ they should be ashamed to be citizens of the USA.

Burning the flag IS NOT a Freedom of Speech… It is a Capital Offence in my book.

Depending on whose it is… A law to ‘protect’ the flag will just stain it permanently, encourage more desecration as acts of civil disobedience and hand a victory to flag desecraters like Ayers .

Keep in mind that the idea of ‘protection’ is from nitwits like Orrin Hatch.

Not imply that our marine friend kept his flag in any thing but great shape, I think Johnny Cash said it best:

I walked through a county courthouse square,
On a park bench an old man was sitting there.
I said, “Your old courthouse is kinda run down.”
He said, “Naw, it’ll do for our little town.”
I said, “Your flagpole has leaned a little bit,
And that’s a Ragged Old Flag you got hanging on it.”

He said, “Have a seat”, and I sat down.
“Is this the first time you’ve been to our little town?”
I said, “I think it is.” He said, “I don’t like to brag,
But we’re kinda proud of that Ragged Old Flag.

“You see, we got a little hole in that flag there
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
And it got powder-burned the night Francis Scott Key
Sat watching it writing ‘Oh Say Can You See.’
And it got a bad rip in New Orleans
With Packingham and Jackson tuggin’ at its seams.

“And it almost fell at the Alamo
Beside the Texas flag, but she waved on through.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee, Beauregard, and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on that Ragged Old Flag.

“On Flanders Field in World War I
She got a big hole from a Bertha gun.
She turned blood red in World War II.
She hung limp and low by the time it was through.
She was in Korea and Vietnam.
She went where she was sent by her Uncle Sam.

“She waved from our ships upon the briny foam,
And now they’ve about quit waving her back here at home.
In her own good land she’s been abused–
She’s been burned, dishonored, denied, and refused.

“And the government for which she stands
    Is scandalized throughout the land.
And she’s getting threadbare and wearing thin,
But she’s in good shape for the shape she’s in.
‘Cause she’s been through the fire before,
And I believe she can take a whole lot more.

“So we raise her up every morning,
    Take her down every night.
We don’t let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought I do like to brag,
‘Cause I’m mighty proud of that Ragged Old Flag.”
