Independence Day: America turns 233

How are you celebrating America’s 233 years of freedom? Do this first: Thank all our troops on the front lines and all our veterans who have served and sacrificed for that freedom. The photo above was taken in May in the Helmand province of Afghanistan, where U.S. Marines are continuing Operation Khanjar.

I’ll be counting my blessings along with thousands of others at the Dallas Tea Party at Southfork Ranch later today. Come on down if you are anywhere near the area. The Christian Science Monitor’s Patrick Jonsson has a good recap and overview of Tea Party gatherings across the country. Tea Party Patriots organizers write:

Independence Day is upon us, and the Tea Party Patriots have over 600 events planned all across the nation! From events expecting thousands of people, like Tulare, California, and Dallas, Texas, to small town parades across the nation, the Tea Party Patriots will be out in force celebrating the birth of the greatest nation on earth.

From Ketchikan, Alaska, to Fishkill, New York; from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Sioux Falls, South Dakota; from Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi to Kihei, Hawaii, and hundreds of other locations spanning every great state of this nation, we will be out in force at Fourth of July parades, tea parties, and fireworks displays. From the country fair, to mega celebrations in the cities, the Tea Party Patriots will be present.

As a public service reminder of the reason for the season, I’m reprinting the Declaration of Independence in its entirety. The transcription comes via the National Archives (thank goodness, Sandy Berger hasn’t swiped it yet!)

IN CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.–Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

    Appointed without Senate confirmation thus accountable only to His ObamaShip. The first American Czar I recall was Energy Czar–during the first oil crisis in 1973; then we had the Drug Czar–is that like a Drug Lord? These super appointed/anointed Czars are a bad thing for a Republic-something to remember on the Fourth of July and others. We have been drifting towards an Imperial Presidency for years-stop it.

If the Founding Fathers came back today, for a visit, they would be amazed that we have lasted this long, since we were so weak at the time, amid a lot of strong countries, and the principles laid down were so radically new; yet saddened at the corruption of those principles for money and power. But, all in all, I think they would be pleased, especially Jefferson, that we hold his document so dear after all these years.     The Declaration of Independence is as valid today as it was when it was written. Far too many liberal educators see it, and our Constitution, as ancient history, they do not teach them with the zeal they were taught years ago. If they teach them at all.

    On this Birthday let your voices be heard as they were heard in England over 200 years ago. Let the tyrants of today fear our voices, for they must know that there are people here today that are just as willing to “pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor” in order to take ‘our’ country back from the socialist tyrants and make our government conform to the ideals ‘we the people’ have fought and died for these past two centuries.

    I plan on attending the Tea Party in Woodbridge today. I thank God for my blessings and I pray for our men and women in harms way. Today the Shield of Freedom stands tall (Semper P). My standard is flying high.

    I see entirely too many parallels between our government today and the tyrannical government of King George III. In a way it is disheartening because there are many people who have the attitude of choosing the evil you know as opposed to the one you don’t. OTOH, I am heartened by everyone who reaches back to the Founding Fathers and embraces their principles and ideas. I truly think there would be many more of us embracing those principles if they were not so ignorant of the danger of their complacency.

    I’ll be celebrating this glorious day at the Memphis Tea Party, at a most appropriate place, Patriot Lake. Have a great day everyone!

    Question: Why did the current National Archivist (someone who presumably has free reign within the National Archives) choose to have Clinton-nominated Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg speak at his Investiture as the Ninth Archivist of the United States on March 7, 2005? Ginsberg’s words are haunting to me, knowing that the archivist could destroy any record of our past that they find “inconvenient”:

    It is astounding to look back and see how far the vision of our Founding Fathers has taken us. Our Constitution has stood for 220 years with only 27 amendments, ten of them that first year alone. Our contributions to the arts and sciences have immeasurably enriched civilization. Indeed, our scientists have won hundreds of Nobel Prizes. We set a standard of living the rest of the world aspires to even in these hard economic times. I’ll leave my gripes for another day. Today is to celebrate being an American.

For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

    So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. Remember: freedom is never free and we are losing our financial freedom.

    It is BECAUSE I believe in the rule of law I have chosen this course. This is not anarchy…quite the opposite. But there is a hierarchy of laws, in my mind, and the fundamental law is our charter (the Constitution). We are faced at times with which law to abide. For us to say we must abide any law is to admit that we are slaves.

    Our system is not irrevocably broken, or I would be a fool to attempt to work within it to amend it.

    The goal here is not to destroy anything, but to correct it, using the procedures the system…our Constitutional system…offers us.

    The “strong grass movement” has already occurred and is continuing as we type, so I hope you will get up and jump in with us. I do agree with you that when push comes to shove, there may be some resemblance to a local militia in the fight for independence, but with the loss of jobs, income and our way of life I feel the response will be a counter-effort that will be unstoppable.

The whole country is shut down and they focus on their fallen heros. I never felt anything like it. I couldn’t help contrasting how memorial day is celebrated here. i wish it was more like that instead of commercialism. At the end of the day there is another siren, there is another ceremony and independence day begins. the next day is all about cookouts and fireworks.

    i find today to be horribly depressing. i never thought i would see this country go down this road. 3.5 more years of this?!?!? ugh.

    In CONGRESS,
    SATURDAY, March 16, 1776.

    IN times of impending calamity and distress; when the Liberties of America are imminently endangered by the secret machinations and open assaults of an insidious and vindictive Administration, it becomes the indispensible duty of these hitherto free and happy Colonies, with true penitence of heart, and the most reverent devotion, publickly to acknowledge the over ruling providence of God; to confess and deplore our offences against him; and to supplicate his interposition for averting the threatened danger, and prospering our strenuous efforts in the cause of Freedom, Virtue and Posterity.

    The Congress therefore, considering the warlike preparations of the British Ministry to subvert our invaluable rights and privileges, and to reduce us by fire and sword, by the savages of the wilderness and our own domestics, to the most abject and ignominious bandage: Desirous, at the same time, to have people of all ranks and degrees, duly impressed with a solemn {Omitted text, 1w} of God’s superintending providence, and of their duty devoutly to rely in all their lawful enterprizes of his aid and direction–do earnestly recommend, that FRIDAY, the seventeenth day of May next, be observed by the said Colonies as a day of HUMILIATION, FASTING, and PRAYER; that we may with united hearts confess and bewail our manifold sins and transgressions, and by a sincere, repentance and amendment of life, appease his righteous displeasure and through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ, obtain his pardon and forgiveness; humbly imploring his assistance to frustrate the cruel purposes of our unnatural enemies; and by inclining their hearts to justice and benevolence, prevent the further effusion of kindred blood. But if continuing deaf to the voice of reason and humanity, and inflexibly bent on desolation and war, they constrain us to repel their hostile invasions by open resistance, {Omitted text, 1w} it may please the Lord of Hosts, the God of Armies, to animate our Officers and Soldiers with invincible {Omitted text, 1w} to guard and protect them in the day of battle, and to crown the Continental arms by sea and land with victory and success: Earnestly beseeching him to bless our civil Rulers and the Representatives of the People in their several Assemblies and Conventions; to preserve and strengthen their Union, to inspire them with an ardent disinterested love of their Country; to give wisdom and stability to their Councils; and direct them to the most efficacious measures for establishing the Rights of America on the most honorable and permanent basis–that he would be graciously pleased to bless all his People in these Colonies with Health and Plenty, and grant that a spirit of incorruptible Patriotism and of pure undefiled Religion may unversally prevail; and this Continent be speedily restored to the blessings of Peace and Liberty, and enabled to transmit them inviolate to the latest Posterity. And it is recommended to Christians of all denominations to assemble for Public Worship, and abstain from servile Labour on the said Day.
