Cap and Tax 8 Watch: A letter to Dave Reichert

Photoshop credit: Leo Alberti
Reader Tim in Bonney Lake, Washington forwarded me his e-mail exchange with GOP Cap-and-Tax 8-er Rep. Dave Reichert. Definitely worth sharing, because it reflects a sentiment that hasn’t died down since the cramdown two weeks ago:
Hi, Michelle -
I’m a Dave Reichert constituent. The day of the vote on cap and trade, I sent a note to Dave Reichert telling him I would never vote for him again due to his support of the bill. I asked him what he was thinking voting for a bill that will significantly increase costs for everyone, particularly in the middle of the worst economic slowdown in at least 25 years.
He sent me back this form letter:
Dear Friend,
Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts regarding legislation to reduce polluting emissions and advance an energy independent future. Debate over the American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454) inspired strong emotions on both sides of the bill. It was a difficult vote that I carefully considered at every step that the legislation developed, from hearings before my House Ways & Means Committee to amendments offered on the floor.
Energy independence and national security are critical issues for America that transcend politics. America cannot maintain global leadership without innovation and new ideas, and we cannot lead if we increasingly depend on foreign nations to heat our homes and move people and goods. The future of our country is at stake and the price of inaction is too great.
How can we accomplish this? By working together as Americans – not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans. The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2454 with my support on June 26, 2009. This comprehensive bill includes new tax incentives, grants, loans, and other aid to speed the development and adoption of new clean energy technologies and to encourage cost-saving, energy efficiency improvements for families and businesses. It represents the first major advancement in decades toward clean coal and nuclear power. The bill would also help industries and manufacturers cut harmful emissions by implementing a market-based system to achieve a substantial reduction in pollution by 2020.
This bill is not perfect, but it is a vital step toward energy independence. My focus from the outset was to return all revenue to the American people, and I helped introduce legislation (H.R. 2757) and an amendment to do so. 93% of any revenue that comes from H.R. 2454 will go directly back to the people, and I am working to gain additional tax relief for middle-income families. While there are many competing numbers on both sides of the debate, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) – which is responsible for estimating the costs of legislation – this bill could cost American families 48 cents per day. I believe this small investment now is worth the pay-offs of families saving on their future energy bills, keeping our country safe, and creating an estimated 33,500 new jobs in Washington State.
This bill has a long road to travel before it becomes law, and as it is considered in the Senate, know that I will continue to work with members of the House and Senate to improve this legislation and address outstanding concerns. Reforming America’s energy policy is essential. The choices we make today to attain energy independence and conserve resources are some of the most significant decisions of our times. We must drive innovation, research and market-based strategies to achieve a secure, prosperous future. We owe this to our children and grandchildren.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to send your thoughts. We must work together to face the challenges ahead for our nation – that’s how we win, that’s how America remains free and strong. Together we will succeed in facing challenges head-on and creating opportunities for generations to come. I will continue to fight for common-sense reforms to our nation’s energy policy that will result in lower energy costs, a cleaner environment and a safer nation. Your interest and input are valued and I hope to hear from you in the future regarding other matters of importance, like the upcoming debate on health care reform. I encourage you to visit my website and sign-up for my monthly e-newsletter at http://reichert.house.gov to learn more about other issues impacting the 8th Congressional District and our nation.
Sincerely,
David G. Reichert
Member of Congress
I wrote back to him thanking him for his form letter reply, finding it hilarious. I quoted the 7/5 Washington Post which said, “It [Waxman-Markey] runs to more than 1,400 pages, swollen with loopholes and giveaways meant to win over un-green industries and wary legislators.” I asked him, “How in the world can a bill filled with taxes, subsidies, and pork to politically-connected people in any sense be called market-based?”
I then asked him if he had taken the time to read the bill yet and reiterated my earlier vow to never vote for him again.
I realize that he couldn’t care less how I feel since he is positioning himself as a Democrat in our increasingly blue district, but I hope to at least prick his conscience (if he has one).

I’m also a Dave Reichert constituent and did vote for him in 2008. Welp, guess I won’t be doing that again. Oh well, I like writing-in my deceased paternal progenitor as a candidate anyway!
And I read that crap right before lunch, too! Blech!
Valiant effort, Tim. Futile though, as they are definitely not listening to their constituency.
Our elected “officials” no longer see themselves as our representatives, but as our overlords. It is true on the east coast as well as the west.
To the unemployment lines for all of them.
These people are aligning themselves with who they believe will be the victors. It’s all about self-protection and preservation. Character and moral compasses lacking.
Form letters is all we will get from this Congress. They don’t read our letters or listen to our phone calls. Everything is already answered in form letters and scripts given to those answering the phones. Torches and pitchforks at the ready. Maybe they will listen to that!
If this bill deosn’t contain any provisions for more US oil refineries, drilling on US soil, Nuclear Facilities, etc, then we will never become independant from foreign energy resources. Wind and Solar just ain’t going to “Git’r done!”
All I can say is, you need to get a cordless drill & take it to DC…now…
EVERYONE should be writing to the head of the RNC. What’s his name again??????
Tell him NO MORE MONEY. The RNC has become useless and will NOT stop supporting these RINO’s.
Rogue…They don’t even believe in it themselves!
Truth is that the Democratic win in 08 was so big that these Republicans don’t care what their voters want. Obvious to them is that their supporters aren’t strong enough in numbers to matter.
There is a misconception that the country has lurched left and these wishy-washy politicians who have no core values or principles are selfishly trying to keep their job, not represent their constituents.
Like George Carlin used to say “NIMBYS” (Not In My Back Yard). It’s all fine and dandy as long as us special people don’t have to look at them. Fat Teddy Kennedy killed the wind farm that was supposed to be off the coast near Martha’s Vineyard.
Okay Misscheryl, you do this all the time. Beat me to the punch and say so eloquently in a few words what I clumsily take two paragraphs to convey.
LOL, I bow to you!
If what I’ve read elsewhere is correct, it’s worse than that. American refineries will end up getting double taxed, with the likely result that our imports of refined products will increase.
They’ll listen when it really gets done! I’m serious; the ONLY way these “public servants” are going to take the voters seriously is when they get the beatdown reminder that they ARE servants. I’m not a union supporter, but old time union tactics may just be worth looking into…kneecap busting and such…
I have written to our representatives here in Virginia and gotten the same form letter responses. The more I write the less responsive they become.
How can we influence peoplel who have their own agenda and feel safe in thier jobs. I find this process very frustrating.
Our local Tea Party on the fourth drew a thousand People (Charlottesville), but there was not one word on local TV or one word about the event in our local paper. The media did not even attend.
Being ignored is the ultimate snub in a democratic society.
What does it take to get their attention?
It’s going to take so much more to straighten this mess out than the “conversion” of 8 people from Republican to Conservative.
Sorry, but the term “Exercise in futility” comes to mind. Unfortunately, I honestly believe that all of our Congress-Critters are beyond hope … and the Senate makes the picture even darker!
I am humbled by your kindness
“but I hope to at least prick his conscience (if he has one).”
He is a politician, of course he does not have one. And his 48 cents a day claim is laughable. He took the lowest possible figure to give. When the plan is in play it will cost everone much more than that. He is lying. How do we know? His lips were moving (metaphorically speaking). Sending letters to these clowns does little, but at least sends a message. We have little power to stop them these days, short of a fed up citizen mob scenario. And I really don’t think that point is far off these days.
Wow.. at least you got a form letter!
I don’t even get one of those from my dear “representative” Queen Sheela..
This seems to be the norm of all bills and statements about bills on the hill these days.
But this d^ck of a rep. DID NOT READ the bill, nor does he seem concerned with the fact that crap & tax will STEAL from Americans and CONSTRICT GROWTH, NOT PROMOTE IT.
Hey, I was there too, groundhunter! Charlottesville, where the Declaration the country was celebrating was written.
The local TV station, ABC I believe, covered it briefly in the late, late news. Blink and miss it.
There were 600-700 people there standing at the Courthouse next to the statue of Stonewall Jackson. Next time, we should hold the Tea Parties at the media’s offices.
This bill has NOTHING to do with energy independence and everything to do with pandering to Eco-Zealots.
BUT HE DIDN”T READ IT!
Global Leadership???? This bills amounts to hobbling us akin to what James Caan had done to him in that movie with Kathy Bates.
So we’ll just turn off our heat and drive businesses into failure so no goods need to be moved?
Well, I do agree that the future of our country is at stake. And this bill is what we must fight against to protect that future.
Ah yes… the Call of the RINO. Let’s work together by doing whatever the Democrats and Liberal Extremists say we should do. Never mind our own principles.
Thank you. It’s at least provides some solace to your constituents that you admit being a traitor.
Give-aways paid for with our tax dollars and price increases in the costs of …well just about everything.
No…. it doesn’t The Eco-Zealots will never let more nuclear plants be built. Who do you think you’re kidding?
Help Industries and manufacturers…. Go out of business.
First… they’ll never see it. Second… he says “American People”. That would be me and many others that aren’t middle income. Even if this did return any money, it will be just another Obama Transfer of Wealth.
No one but self-serving politicians looking to pass this to collect their pork or votes from dimwits, believe the CBO number.
The rest of his letter is such bulls&%$%, it’s sickening.
And his closing should read…
“Thank you for contacting me. I find your trivial concerns annoying and I will continue to vote however I see fit, despite what you, or any one constituent who disagrees with me thinks.
Good day!”
right on malkin-fan. let the beltway rinos fund the rino party. i’ll fund sarah-pac and take my chances. at least what she says sounds like reality to me, whereas the lip flapping from reichert, mccain and snowe sounds like so much b.s. mccain is crowing he lost a vote but had some democrat support. typical of his philosophy. mine is that second place is the first loser.
OK, then…
DRILL NOW and DRILL HERE.
We can keep the 800 BILLION DOLLARS a year to save on our own energy costs. PLUS we can use that money to advance the ‘everything’ approach, wind, solar, NUCLEAR, oil, natural gas, etc.
This is the ONLY idea that makes sense.
We KEEP our US dollars and we use them for our country.
OH, and by the way, all you NIMBY’s…you can only see EIGHT (8) miles to the horizon. Yep, 8 miles.
If you’re on the 20th floor maybe you can see 16 to 20 miles.
ANY oil platform(s) beyond 25 miles (most want to drill at 50+ miles out to sea) will NEVER be seen from the shore.
And the ocean leaks hundreds of times more oil and methane than all platforms combined.
DRILL NOW!
“This bill is not perfect, but it is a vital step toward energy independence.”
So I’m guessing that if the brakes on his SUV only worked half the time he would say, “It’s not perfect but it’s a fun ride.”
He never saw your letter(s) and he never will (and I doubt an actual live person even did). I know it’s cathartic to write them, but that’s about it, thanks to auto-reply bots. Call instead and talk to a real person and when he’s in town, be sure to be where he is with a voice and a sign.
What I don’t understand is all the talking (from both left and right) about how we are now part of a global economy and it is important that we remain steadfast stewards of such, and yet we MUST rid ourselves of foreign energy sources – anyone? If you are part of a global economy, you must, in turn, purchase things from other countries – or else you aren’t really global – just local.
This is like the whole Darwin thing. You either believe in evolution and the survival of species through natural selection, or you believe in interfering through laws and government action to save species that possibly would’ve died off due to a changing environment – even if the reason the environment is changing is due to humans.
The hypocrisy is overwhelming…
- Reptevye -
the tea party organizers need to mount a mass tea party in washington d.c. coordinate the tea party groups with the unemployed by obama policy screwups, and show our pols what a multimillion man march is all about. labor day sounds good.
I’m SHOCKED!!!!
at how reasonable that is beginning to sound.
Thx Zerobama, we’re beginning to sound like your wife… angry.
It is things like this and so many other examples that OUGHT to lead the RNC to a basic idea to strengthen the party and send a clear message to the world. Here we continually hear how they are floundering and trying to figure out how to combat the DNC, I think the timing is perfect.
If we are to care about the RNC (which is debatable) and want it to be a force (conservative that is, in order to win), then it is time for them to step up on this issue, oust those “RINOS” from the party and once and for all, prove who the party is and will be.
These RINOS will be offended, but let’s be honest, they wouldn’t care. But for the red blooded American, it would be the first sign of life the RNC has had in decades.
Steele should step up and immediately throw out a list of names of those members, no longer allowed to be associated with the RNC or accept or receive any further funds from its coffers.
It is amazing the simple explanations to so many problems that our politicians refuse to do.
Holidays wont work any more.
Just a regular weekend with lots of pre-planning.
Ike Skelton of Missouri’s 4th district is my representative. He’s been in office for over 30 years and voted in favor of this massive tax and giveaway bill. I’m going to work my a$$ off to retire this nancy pelosi wanna be.
Good call shooter, we in North Houston were initially going to have it on July 4th, but changed it to July 2nd, which still was difficult enough.
I understand symbolism, but I honestly believe the people have had enough with gestures and symbolism and are crying out for action. A certain day means nothing to this movement as much as actually doing something does.
I suppose John Cornyn will shortly accounce his endorsement of Dave Reichert for re-election.
Can’t you just picture the future. Refineries lining Mexico’s coast right by the border. Mexico’s economy will jump start, while we get more air pollution because of Mexico’s lax environmental laws. And we get to pay whatever price Mexico wants.
You are welcome to throw out all of the crooks in congress. Just leave Michele Bachmann (R) of Minnesota. She is the only real Conservative that I am aware of serving in Congress. When I read the huge number of Democrats writing filthy hatred remarks about her, Sarah Palin and Michelle Malkin… I know these Conservative women are doing God’s work fighting to save America from Liberals.
Here is a copy of the e-mail that Nancy Pelosi sent to her e-mail list to celebrate the passage of the Cap & Trade bill in the house.
Notice that she says she wants President Obama to sign the bill by December in time to work on the successor to the 1997 Kyoto Treaty. We need to stop this bill before then!!!
House Passes Historic and Transformative American Clean Energy and Security Act
——————————————————————————–
July 2, 2009
——————————————————————————–
Preserving our planet is critical to ensuring a safe and bright future for future generations. With the future of our country – and indeed our entire planet – possibly at stake, now is the time to turn our collective concerns about global warming into concerted action. On June 26th, under the leadership of Chairman Henry Waxman of the Energy and Commerce Committee and Chairman Edward Markey of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, the House of Representatives did just that by passing H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act by a vote of 219-212.
The American Clean Energy and Security Act will create millions of new, green jobs; increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil; increase American competitiveness by making us a technology leader; meet the climate crisis with sound science; and reduce overall energy costs for consumers and businesses.
The bill would create a national Renewable Electricity Standard requiring twenty percent of all electricity to be generated by renewable sources – such as wind, solar, and geothermal – by the year 2020, allowing for a quarter of the twenty percent requirement to come from energy efficiency savings. It will also:
Promote development of a smart electrical transmission grid, as well as carbon capture and sequestration technology;
Promote the creation of green jobs;
Create a cap on greenhouse gas emissions from utilities, oil companies, and large industrial sources; and
Create a system of tradable federal permits, known as “cap and trade.” This cap and trade system will reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020 growing to 80 percent below 2005 levels by 2050.
I am pleased that the House was able to move clean energy legislation this year. This critical legislation will create jobs, improve our national security, and reduce global warming. I hope to have a bill passed by the entire Congress for the President to sign by December, when climate negotiators gather in Copenhagen, Denmark to work on a successor to the 1997 Kyoto Treaty.
Fighting global warming is one of the greatest challenges facing our nation and global community. This Congress will continue to search for solutions to the energy crisis while still protecting our environment from unnecessary assault. We will continue to offer innovative energy solutions and press for legislation that invests in clean, renewable energy and efficient technologies; reduces transit fares; helps Americans struggling with energy prices; rewards conservation; cracks down on oil speculators and the practice of price gouging; forces Big Oil to ‘use it or lose it’ on federal drilling permits; and transitions America to a new more affordable energy future.
Please feel free to forward this information to your family and friends. To learn more about these efforts, to express your views, or to sign up for email updates, please visit my Web site.

Bitterness is building, the urge to go buy a gun is becoming almost irresistible. Just last night while discussing politics with friends, I suggested foregoing another tea party and gathering as many disgruntled taxpayers as possible, traveling to Sacramento with torches and pitchforks. Maybe that would get media attention.
Except for the fact that China and Russia are “allowed” to drill closer to our coast than we can.
Amazing does not even begin to cover it.
These bastards think that all will be well when half the employed in this country (what’s left of it) are either federal or state employees, and the other half are making hand-thrown pottery jars and growing organic vegetables.
My only concern anymore is what flavor of Kool-Aid I should use to mix with the arsenic.
If there is a shred of chance that our next election will be “honest” (or at least most of it), then we need to send a message loud and clear. Vote the bums out…all of them! We need to make that happen. Get involved in your local politics and work to defeat the creeps. Unfortunately for Minnesota, we are stuck with Franken for 6 years! SPIT. But he may shoot himself in the foot before then. He is known to have a vile temper and it is bound to emerge.
I was visiting with a family friend a few weeks ago who is one of the most liberal people I personally know and she said that she thought she was going to buy a gun due to the direction the country was headed.
It shocked me so much, I almost spit out the mouthful of fine adult beverage I had just drank.
At least someone got a form letter. Any calls, letters, faxes or e-mails to Norm Dicks, I’m not even afforded a form letter. Course I don’t expect any type of answer, didn’t vote for him.
Sarge
Where were you for the Jonestown thread a while back?
It’s Flavor-Aid, not Kool-Aid.
It’s cyanide, not arsenic.
And grape is the preferred flavor. Just look at Old Blue Lips. It’s what he drinks.

I think you have hit upon something. If the mountain does not come to you then go to the mountain. If you are holding a tea party outside of a TV station or a newspaper headquarters, they can’t very well ignore it, can they? Or how about in front of CBS, NBC or ABC Headquarters. Isn’t that the way the race baiters and the unions get things done? Maybe we need to start using their playbook!
Where were you for the Jonestown thread a while back?
Thanks, SGM, for the remarks.
Using the left’s playbook is very much what I’m advocating; sort of fight fire with fire so to speak.
It really wasn’t that interesting, but Chappy was at the peak of his game for that thread. Here’s how it all started.
Holding a Tea Party in the middle of a Fourth of July celebration gives the media an excuse to ignore an event that clashes with their agenda.
They can’t ignore it when it’s on their doorstep.
It has the added advantage that they don’t have to go far for a story. It serves their laziness as well.
I decided to make good on my promise (Don’t laugh, I know it has a long way to go but everybody has to start somewhere!)
OT – I’m curious to know what most will do on their census forms? Anyone care to fill me in.
Have you tried going into your personal e-mail account and accessing MM’s site through that? Worked for me!
Wow! That is awesome! I am impressed…nice work!
I plan to answer only those questions I feel are non-intrusive. You would need to make that decision yourself. I won’t answer the ones about what time I go to work, or how many miles I drive, or if I have a flush toilet, etc. I think my name, occupation, age, race, and number in my household is sufficient for a census.
Two other things to comment on…
Tea parties on holidays. I also think they need to be on regular weekends and not holidays. We generally have other plans for holidays. On the Fourth, we were out of town. On Labor Day, we will be at a family gathering. I think we would get more people if the days were not holidays.
I have concerns about a huge march on DC. My concern as an “oldster” is…will there be enough potties for millions of people? And where would everyone sleep? I am serious.
Regarding Pelosi’s letter. She really needs to take her spiel about global warming out of her communications. In future years, her letters will be in the history books as examples of delusional thinking. Nancy, the globe is not warming!!! What a maroon!
I, too, live in Reichert’s district. To be quite honest, whoever he runs against will be a horrible leftwing democrat. Reichert has about a 50% rating for conservative votes. This in no way defends his vote. I was angry about this vote, and called his office before the vote to tell him NOT to vote for it. But it seems this is a choice from now on between the lesser of two evils. His opponent will always be a horrifying way-less-than-50% conservative rating leftist. I will be stuck voting for Reichert. BUT NEVER AGAIN WILL I GIVE HIM A PENNY. That is how I will have to punish him. Because I am not someone who votes for an even worse leftist to get back at the one who disappointed me here and there. This is reality. The money will talk volumes, as $$ is the lifeblood of politics.
We weren’t strong enough to vote out all the TARP yes-voters, and that was mere weeks before the election.
Send her here. I do what I can.
Hope is not a plan; not all change is good. WE are the civilian national security force! I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. The resistance is here; the resistance is now! RESIST!!!!!!
ECS
We attended a Tea Party in St. Augustine, Florida last Sunday, July 5 and according to the organizers (based on the registration records) there were 2000 attendees. There were featured speakers, performers and sign holding participants but guess what, NO MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA in sight. SGM is right, we need to hold these events at the media.s doorsteps and not in public places.

… maybe in about 300 years.
Fixed!
So typical of the mush-headed members of the Stupid Party; they think they’re being Americans by refusing to be partisan while the Dems are quite happy to stomp them in brutal Soviet style. Morons like these show up at a gun fight without even bothering to bring a knife.
I wouldn’t be so sure his district is turning bluer, polls indicate more and more independents and dems are going to the right.
219 traitors to America voted for that bill plan and simple, bastards have no loyalty to their own country.
Pelousy is full of crap.
At least Tim GOT a response, albeit an incredibly self-serving and inane word grouping that had lots of words and said NOTHING! Typical polictico BS response.
Based on the complete lack of any response, my message to Reichert went completely unnoticed. Perhaps his next campaign should also go unnoticed.
Reichert now has 3 terms in office…He now qualifies for Congressional retirement pay, hence his indifference.
Keep in mind that although Reichert was the first elected Sheriff of King County in modern times theat I am aware of, attention should have been paid to the fact that he was initially appointed Sheriff of the same county by the King County Council, before he ran for election as Sheriff. King County is and has been THE liberal county of Washington State for a very long time.
In hindsight, the previous facts should have made conservatives suspicious of his motives when he tacked pretty conservatively on KVI interviews about 10 years ago.
He played a good song and dance. WE need to do better next time up here.
I got the same form-letter response from Reichert.
I hope the other seven GOP idiots are in the same hot water with their former supporters.
Rep Reichert’s letter illustrates the leftward drift of a traumatized group of Repub politicians who think they can save their arses by becoming Dems-lite. We need to keep reminding them at every chance that this is not so, but they seem to have tuned us conservatives out already. 2010 will be a VERY interesting year; will the Repubs wake up in time to seize the chance to make the Dems pay for their socialist power-grabs?
