Obama picks Obamacare advocate as surgeon general; O: “We are going to get this done”

Reuters reports that President Obama will announce his surgeon general pick at around 11:30am-ish this morning.
Nope, it’s not Dr. Phil.
She’s Dr. Regina Benjamin, an Alabama rural physician.
Benjamin was the first black woman to head a state medical society, received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights and last fall received a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant,” the AP says.
She also made headlines in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in rebuilding her rural health clinic that serves 4,400 patients.
Benjamin will be another administration voice for S-CHIP and Obamacare:
Through her personal practice and advocacy work, Benjamin sees no easy solution to the problem, but hopes for a nationwide movement to provide universal health access for everyone in the country.
“I think there certainly can be a minimum benefit that everyone could have and then you could buy more on top of that if you wanted it,” she says. “It can’t just be a government program. It has to be something that everybody is a part of–government, private industry, individuals.”
She cites the Children’s Health Insurance Program, a federal- and state-sponsored program that aims to provide insurance to all uninsured children in the country, as a step in the right direction.
“Now, we need to cover the parents of those children,” she says. “If we do that, we’ve come a long way toward providing universal coverage.”

At Rose Garden ceremony announcing Dr. Benjamin, Obama insists his health care takeover plan is not dead:
“We are going to get this done.”

well duh….this man continues to scare the heck out of me…
In both the “None Dare Say…” and the “Ummm…has anybody noticed…” categories…
doesn’t THE ONE’s cabinet appear NOT like America…
Rather over-represented, in terms collectivist understand…
Jes’ sayin’….
It doesn’t surprise me that Obama would pick an Obamacare advocate. Obviously, he wants someone who supports him. It’s the price we pay for having him as president. At the rate he is going, there won’t be much of a Constitutional government anyway, in 2011, with the support of rinos and the democrats. I’m waiting for the day when he declares himself “president for life” like the other power-hungry people over history.
Hurry up and get those aborted fetuses stat! We need some more stem cells for Christopher Reeves!!!
No surprise. The question is, since she believes
how many indigent patients was she treating, and was she charging? Walk the talk, as they say.
Well that’s no surprise.
And Ragspierre, I thought the same thing.
No??? REALLYYY???
hahaha, Ragspierre.
If there’s anything that needs sayin’, I’m not afraid to do it.
As you say–’over-reach’ much?
Hey! Guess what? I already have that you sad twat.
Pretty soon D.C. will be run like Los Angeles. you can take it from there.
I am sorry, but wasn’t it you who said this:
on the Sotomayor thread? Or are you claiming that people from Alabama are overrepresented in Obama’s cabinet?
At the moment I have the pneumonia. As my doctor does NOT accept Medicare or insurance I was able to get in and see the Physicians Assistant Saturday. Instead of paying a ten dollar deductible for Amoxicillian I paid twelve dollars and then paid for the X-ray.
It is called having insurance for catastrophic illness and paying for the routine yourself. Third Party payer paying from dollar one or a low deductible does not make us healthier. That was the mantra for a generation and has been proved to be not true. But it does drive up cost and lowers quality offset by longer wait times-if you like longer wait times.
Dr. Regina Benjami should have stayed in Naleans-she and Nagin deserve each other. I do not know which hurts worse-Obama or the pneumonia-hopefully Amoxicillian will make the pneumonia go away–too bad we have no meds to make Obama go away
Wait wait wait wait. Is Michelle Malkin seriously playing hush hush on the new Young Republicans chairman?
SERIOUSLY???????
Red State Skeptic said: Something off topic.
Yay…another back-door approacher to nationalized health care…whoopee….
So, Duh Ones SG supports Rationed Health Care. Strike One.
What’s her stand on abortion?
Rags, I agree, he is appointing a lot of minorities, making caucasions the real minorities. Will we now qualify for affirmative action status? He is going overboard, big time.
Speaking of health care reform, I think I am going to be sick any minute now.
And Arizona…GET WELL SOON!!!
aaaah lemme guess – she’s for it, except when she’s trying to help Obama keep his promise to the pope and reduce the number of abortions.
How does one “limit” abortions – you are either for the killing children or you are opposed to the killing of children. Oh wait, unless you are a liberal in which case you get to determine who’s worth being born and who isn’t – silly me!
Will the Congress be on the same health plan as the rest of the country? Yeah, right. They don’t care what we have to deal with as long as they continue their elitist lifestyle. Disgusting bunch of hypocrites, every one of them. Just like Obama and school vouchers. As long as HIS kids have a good school, the hell with the rest. He pretends to care, but I look behind those eyes and see…nothing.
Isn’t that the system that’s currently in place? No one can be turned down for care, regardless of citizenship. If “you want more,” you buy what is known as “health insurance.” And this woman received a “Genius” award???
Can you say, Joycelyn Elders? Another “brilliant” rural doctor…yeah, I’m buying it….
Here’s an interesting fact about her:
Apparently the paperwork and bureaucracy of Medicare and Medicaid were too much to handle on a patient by patient basis – whodathunkit?
This “lump sum” exception for “rural health clinics” might invite corruption by simply inflating patient numbers – no individual billing needed. I’m not accusing her of anything except avoiding the onerous paperwork, but it still sounds like a sketchy provision in the law.
Careful tre -under NewSpeak it is NOT an abortion but a Choice. The Thought Police/New Black Panthers Party is watching.
But yes-Strike two
Or, better yet, who’s life is worth protecting;
Hamad, the terrorist, or
Zoe the zygote.
Gosh, these life decisions can really be taxing on a person’s ability to put important things in perspective!
SCHIP is NOT “government sponsored”. I pay for it in higher cigarette prices.
That was the FIRST tax Obama passed on people “making less than $250,000 a year”, a week after he got into office.
LOL–’government sponsored’….
52.9% of voters agree–Yes we can–be that stupid!
forest #21–The clinic wouldn’t have to falsify anything, just run as many through as possible. The accounting doesn’t take into consideration the amount of time given to each patient, only that they are seen. A real patient mill that can become a scam, but isn’t exactly illegal.
Off topic, but I have to tell you…an example of the elitists attitude. There was some “gala” event here in Minneapolis over the weekend. Tony Bennett and a bunch of other “celebrities” were in town. Our local newspeople were interviewing some old has-been who looked familiar, but I’m not sure who it was. Probably some hack character actor who hasn’t worked since 1970. Anyway, he was asked how he liked Minneapolis and he said, “It’s a convenient layover when travelling from LA to New York.” Jerk. I’m sure he thought that was perfectly O.K. to say to a Minneapolis resident. Remind me to stop supporting any of these creeps ever again by going to their stupid movies, etc. They think everyone in “flyover country” are hicks.
I apologize for the rant…back to the topic!!
Strike three, she’s a looney leftwing liberal.
Yeeeeer OUT!
I’m also a Christian, Conservative, NRA member. To them, I’m an extremist.
Muslim terrorists get sent to Bermuda to soak up the sun and look at bikini-clad, buxom, blonde beauties.
I’m guessing that Christian, Conservative Americans will be sent to a prison camp near Point Barrow, Alaska.
FIFY
Just because we don’t think in terms of race over qualifications and philosophy doesn’t mean that we can’t take note of the fact that the left begins with race and considers any other factors last (if at all). There is literally no doubt at all that Sotomayor’s primary qualification is that she’s Hispanic. They’ve been beating on that drum since before she was nominated.
That’s a given. Obama doesn’t choose any other kind.
The opposition is also more passionate on the issue, according to this poll.
Put me at the top of that list…to go with my DHS placement…
Chaps, just employing collectivist’s standards. Not pretty, huh…?
Personally, I would not care one whit if THE ONE’s cabinet was composed of all minorities…IF they were not ALMOST completely collectivist ideologues. Diversity? Not from THE ONE, or your buddies on the Statist end of the scale.
They can talk…but NEVER walk.
Yeah. Rags spent a ton of time debating her actual qualifications, or lack thereof.
chap: Her major qualification seems to be that she is ultra-liberal, hispanic, wise, and female.
And apparently neither did THE ONE.
Her prime qualification appears to be her ideology.
Tell me that isn’t the case.
The way it should read in the U.S.A.
That’s why her race was the first thing you took note of? Curious.
That is silly. Setting aside the debate on your choice of adjectives, if you believe Obama to be a collectivist, why shouldn’t his cabinet reflect that? If Tancredo got elected president in 2012, would you complain if he didn’t have enough collectivists to diversify his cabinet?
I so so miss Jocelyn Elders – she was good for a laugh! Talk about a physician I would never want to treat me!! Anybody know what happened to her drug-addicted son? Did she ever write that book about how masturbation should be taught in the public schools-just askin’.
NO. But pointing out the hypocrisy of the collective is my point. Your side would CERTAINLY castigate a Tancredo administration that was reflective of his end of the ideological spectrum.
Whatdathink, Chaps… Will we see any Mamy cartoons from the MSM, as we did with Dr. Rice? You remember her…the lady with massive qualifications for her office?
“She has established a family practice that allows her to treat all incoming patients, many of whom are uninsured, and frequently travels by pickup truck to care for the most isolated and immobile in her region.”
Wonderful work, and she should have the opportunity…and her patients should have the benefit…of continuing her practice.
I fail to see how any of that qualifies her to administer the nation’s Federal health bureaucracy. You?
That is just a lie. I read her blurb before the picture on this site was posted.
Ideology was the first thing I noticed. You?
She never got around to it–I think she was too ‘busy’…
I didn’t say “noticed.” I said her race was the first thing you “took note of.” As in commented on. Which it was. I would never claim to pretend to know what you thought of first, I can only comment on what you chose to share with us first, which is telling enough.
That’s the thing about conservatives. The topic is only something you want to talk about.
A confirmed racist elected to lead the “Young” Republicans, and endorsed by Bobby Jindal. Hey, nothing to see here. Move along folks.
I was really disgusted when Jeneane Garafolo made that ad hominem smear of the allegedly racist tea partiers. But the more this stuff comes out of the right, practically on a weekly basis now, the more apparent it is that racism is becoming a MAJOR ugly spot on the right.
But maybe I was naive to begin with, given the overwhelming evidence of enduring racism in the red south.
“Brighto! Brighto! It makes old bodies new! We’ll sell a million bottles, Woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo, woo!”
- Curly (DIZZY DOCTORS, 1937)
She got a $500,000 grant with almost no strings attached and her “rural health clinic” can bill Medicaid lump sum by patient numbers instead of doing individual billing.
I sure hope they have excellent bookkeeping at that clinic.
I fail to see why you would ignore the fact that she also was president of the Alabama Medical Association, served on the Board of Trustees for the AMA, was named one of the best leaders in America by US News and World Report…
Looks to me like she might be planning to show America how to do obesity right. Don’t studies consistently show that our health care costs would plummet if people like her lost the tubbage?
AMA as in American Medical Association, for clarification.
No, no, no, Chaps, baby.
“Noticed” or “took note of”…
please.
But, am I surprised at your response? Hell no! I predicted it in my first post, did I not?
Please, take a moment and make the case that THE ONE’s cabinet is composed on merit; that he has selected people who would best serve the nation in their respective posts.
Take a moment and tell us that Sotomayer is the leading jurist of our time.
Please.
Give us the case that Dr. Benjamin is the most qualified person in America to be the Surgeon General.
If you want to see totally entrenched bigotry, try The Hamptons, Georgetown, or Marin County.
Or the chambers of Judge Sotomayor or Justice Ginsberg.
Or the White House.
Does she owe any back taxes?
Okay red state bigot, I will help you out, see the article on the top of the page? Thats the topic. Michelle also didn’t mention the genocide in the sudan, but that doesn’t mean that she is ignoring the topic.
Does that help you?
Whatever you say. But please try to deny the fact that it was the first thing you commented on, before even attacking her for being some fanatical lib that wants to ban your cheezy puffs and mandate Plan B be given to 12 year old girls in homeroom.
Was Alito? Was Roberts? For pete’s sake, please don’t try to tell me Thomas is. There is not some “best qualified person for the job.” That is a silly concept.
Again, I think “most” qualified is a stupid concept. She certainly seems pretty qualified according to all the information I found that you apparently ignored because you were too fixated on her race.
chap; i GUARANTEE that if a white republican president so overrepresented white males in his administration as this black president is overrepresenting black americans in his administration, he would be villified on a daily basis as a racist, sexist and all around blaggart. i don’t care that he is doing it, it is his right, i object to the msm categorizing white republicans as racist if they wish to surround themselves with people of similar experience.
Sorry.
I guess I should have repeated everything that Michelle had already said.
Then, you would not have had anything to say, right? I mean, I could have made the novel statement I did, and I would have been covered. Right?
The rest of your post is the predicable (shazaam!) “Well, but you guys…” BS.
I’ll stack Thomas up against Ginsberg as a legal thinker any day. Ditto Alito, Roberts, and Scalia.
Chap: these days, opposing ANY obama pick is considered racism, so pardon me if I simply ignore the charge. A great example is red state bigot, he does nothing but charge the GOP with racism while excusing REAL racism on his lord and masters picks part.
Like?
And I repudiate your “fixated on race” BS.
Again.
I noted a trend in THE ONE’s appointments. You know…like Ginsberg’s “disparate” outcome fetish.
But you haven’t answered one of my challenges, except with “silly”, “stupid”, etc.
C’mon, Chaps. Put it up, or shut up.
No. You chose to go the racist route. Normally, I wouldn’t say a word, but not a minute prior, I saw your incredibly hypocritical post, chastising edelweiss for fixating on race.
Like I said in Post #46, president of the Alabama Medical Association, a Trustee of the American Medical Association, former associate dean of a medical school…I’ll let wiki do the rest:
All things you chose to ignore to comment on her race.
No, Chaps. My post was ABOUT the hypocrisy of the collective.
I was putting it back in your face (not you, personally).
Please, Chaps. Answer the challenges.
Oh, and tell me that minorities are NOT over-represented (a collectivist term and concept) in THE ONE’s administration. Since you have already tacitly admitted that is not on merit, to what do YOU attribute it?
Hmmmm…..???
Could it be that you approve of THE ONE’s racism?
Could it be that you regard it as “turn-abouts-fair-play”?
Hmmmm…..????
Another flat-footed lie.
I didn’t CHOOSE to ignore anything.
Let me ask again. Is this nice doctor…a thoroughly doctrinaire collectivist…the most qualified physician in the US to serve as our Surgeon General? Do you see race in there anywhere?
Do you doubt that race was a factor in her selection by THE ONE? If so, please state your reasons.
So you’re ok with your racist comment because at least you are not being hypocritical about it?
What challenges? You asked me if she was qualified. I answered with detail.
If its a collectivist term and concept, why are you so concerned about it? And I have no clue as to the racial, ethnic, religious, etc… makeup of Obama’s administration. Since the over representation is your claim, perhaps you could provide the data.
I have admitted nothing close to that, tacitly or otherwise.
and
To which I again note your dishonesty.
Yes, you did. You portrayed her as a simply a family practitioner, absolutely ignoring all of the administrative and policy work and positions she has held.
Again, I believe the concept of “most qualified” is a stupid concept on its face. I believe, from what I have read, that she is very accomplished and very qualified.
I have no idea. But since I believe she is obviously qualified for the position, I find it a moot point.
Looking at her profile on wiki, it sounds someone with a like a great deal of political activity at a young age. Most doctors are busy caring for patients during this period. I wonder what her motivation was for joining all these medical boards? What is her agenda? When does she have time to care for patients, and if she was busy working at local ER’s while operating the rural health clinic, who saw the patients in that clinic? This woman has one political office or another in her blood, and I wonder if she cares more about this office than about the people it is meant to represent? About being on some board of the AMA, over 90% of the doctors say that AMA no longer represents their views. Her desire for nationalized health care places her into a low percent minority among American doctors, and it wouldn’t be surprising if her other views on health and treatment are not shared by the majority of her colleagues. As far as the “genius award”…Arafat was awarded the nobel peace prize while sodomizing little Arab boys and building bombs to kill children.
Again, that is a lie.
I do not ask you if she is qualified. I know of no explicit qualification for the Surgeon General. I am not even certain they have to be a licensed physician.
I asked if you could make the case that Dr. Benjamin was the most qualified for the post.
You reeled off her CV. You did not answer the question.
To which I have to note that you are totally misrepresenting what I said.
Tell me, in specific detail, your definition of “most qualified” Surgeon General. I need you to list every qualification, personal and professional, and also assign a specific weight to each of them, perhaps by a points system or maybe as a percentage. However, you will also have to give me a reasoned, irrefutable explanation as to why the qualifications and weights you listed are the only reasonable ones. I mean, someone that weighs “years of experience” as 12% instead of 14% is obviously daft, right?
If you truly think there is some mythical “most qualified” person out there for any position more complicated then working the fryolator at McDonalds, then I hope I am not bursting your bubble in telling you that the tooth fairy and easter bunny are fictional as well.
On the bright note, it would be really funny to have her anounce the need to fight obesity. Obama can make anti smoking anouncements.
Rags, you have to understand how these people get on the list…visualize this;
People qualified for any given position in this administration are assembled (with promises of a free lunch, no doubt) together. A spokesperson for Obama makes the statement: “Anyone here who is interested in serving as _______, take one step forward.”
In an almost choreographed movement, 9/10ths of the crowd turn pale at the mere suggestion, and take one giant step backwards, while gesturing with their crossed index fingers.
The 3 or 4 grinning idiots left standing in front of the others, are too ignorant to figure out that they’re putting themselves out as ideological scapegoats…or too liberal to care!
…And that’s how “public servants” are chosen.
I quoted from the Reuters piece on her.
I did not drill down into the Wiki-world for her CV. I did not have your motivation of attacking me.
Is it your assertion that her positions on the United Way, a few Alabama Governor’s commissions on this or that make her the nation’s premier expert on communicable disease, national emergency response, or on administering an immense health bureaucracy?
Speak to those issues, please.
I have only told you 9 times it is a dumb question, not only because it is asking for a standard which does not exist even in theory, let alone real life, but also because not me, you, Obama, or anyone else has, or could possibly have that kind of knowledge. How many doctors are there in the US? Do we have to collect and weed through every CV out there before your silly standard would be satisfied?
So I answered it the only way an intelligent person could, which is to say that she appears very qualified.
And, with that answer in #72, I rest my case.
Remember, Ladies and Gentleman, when asked to “make the case that Dr. Benjamin was the most qualified for the post“, the witness could only call that “a dumb question”, and tell us that that answer was “the only way an intelligent person” could respond.
Thank you.
Crazy me, I guess I would have assumed that someone accusing Obama of appointing her because she’s black would want to rule out any other reasons, like…oh..I don’t know…her qualifications, maybe.
Since when is the Surgeon General required to be the premier expert in communicable diseases? And what exactly do you think her duties would be with respect to “administering an immense health bureaucracy?” Do you even know what the Surgeon General does? So far as I can tell, they advise the president on health issues, act as a spokesperson for the prez on health issues, and operates the PHSCC, which seems pretty limited in its scope. You make it sound like she is running Medicaid, Medicare, the NIH, the CDC, etc…
No. I gave you two very specific reasons it was a dumb question. It’s like posing the question “What can jump higher? A kangaroo or purple?” and then claiming victory when the opponent refuses to engage the question.

Have you read about Obama’s new science czar? He believes in involuntary sterilization. That’s how you limit abortions. That or hand out birth control to everyone from 11yrs old and up like they tried to do here in Portland, ME.
For all posters to this thread (besides Chaps, who has already established his record)…
Please, give us your opinion as to the following:
1. Dr. Benjamin’s selection by BIG BRO was more influenced by–
a. her ideology as an advocate for universal health-care
or
b. her qualifications to lead the health infrastructure of the U.S. government
2. Dr. Benjamin’s selection by BIG BRO was more influenced by–
a. her status as a minority and woman
or
b. her qualifications to lead the health infrastructure of the U.S. government
1=a
2=a
extra credit: She is also a zombie.
C’mon people, give Chappy a break. He’s just butt-hurt Big O didn’t choose him for SCOTUS. Don’t tell him but I think he doesn’t do anything for the quota.
She is not leading the US’s health infrastructure. The Surgeon General is a lot more impotent than you are claiming.
‘why are you dressed up like that?’
‘the doctor says I’s impotent, so I’s gonna dress like I’s impotent!’
Racist stereotype pronunciation alert!
Racist stereotype pronunciation alert!
Perhaps you mean “historically”, or “under law”.
But we are dealing with a out-law administration that recognizes no historical restraints on power.
Or do you wish to pretend otherwise…???
Alright Chap, I’ve looked everywhere, but I’ll be dipped in gook if I can find anything that speaks to Dr. Benjamin’s fertility! Where do you find all these fun facts?
Ah, Rogue…
ROFLMFAO…!!!
I’ll have you know, Rogue, that’s how folks talk where I growed up.
I’m still trying to figure out why it is put that way to start with…why wasn’t it written thusly:
‘The Surgeon General is less potent’
?
To be truly colorblind, race should never even come up. This is of course why so many conservatives oppose Sotomayer.
Well, at least she’s not here in Alabama any more…
Oh goodie another cabinet member. It looks like the IRS will get some more of their missing tax revenue….
When did the Congress amend the Constitution to allow the appointment of a Surgeon General and exactly what powers does the Surgeon General wield.
In my copy, I do not see the position of Surgeon General outline and what powers that office holds.
Anyone notice the photo of hillary clinton on Drudge today?
The arm sling has a US – logo on it, kind of like a presidential seal.
I can’t help but to think when I see that photo….” special coverage for us, crummy universal health care for the rest of you”
Check it out!
