Dear, arrogant, elitist, moronic, narcissistic Chappy,

It is obvious you highly esteem your own opinion. You have made that abundantly clear throughout the day. Not all of us attend to your pompous ramblings with the same delight as you though.

You are a legend in your own mind and you can’t help but attempting to demonstrate the love you feel for, well, you! It makes love stories like Anthony and Cleopatra or Nicholas and Alexandra or Romeo and Juliet pale in comparison to the love between Chappy and Chappy!

I have allowed you the perfect platform to demonstrate what a narcissist you are. And I appreciate your eager demonstration.

And I appreciate your “little buddy,” oA, pitching in remind us of his undying love and devotion for you. It is amusing. I haven’t seen such a devoted pair like the two of you since Gilligan and the Skipper. It warms the heart, really.

Next time you think you have something I want to hear think once for a change and keep your arrogant, elitist, moronic, narcissistic, ambulance-chasing thoughts to yourself.

Well, oA, perhaps Chappy can regale you with the story of how he has read “about 10 books about wine.” That should leave you drooling in admiration of your hero…

About 10 more than you, no doubt. But of course, I am one of only two people who actually replied to your plea for advice, gave you specific, intelligent reasons why some wines were better than others, and because your prickish nature just can’t help itself, you had to make an issue of it. You could have saved us all a lot of trouble if you had simply read my post and been appreciative, or simply ignored it if it is really so vile to you that I might actually know what I am talking about. But it really isn’t about the actual merits of my post, is it? It’s about the fact that you are an incredible tool, and feel the need to share that with us all.

Well, mission accomplished, sir. Now go stfu.

Again, set aside your personal feelings for me and tell your guests that Barbera d’Asti will probably be too acidic and soft to go well with London Broil. That they would be wise to go with something with a bit more of a tannic backbone. But that the Asti would make a perfectly refreshing pre-dinner drink. I expect in any case, you will deny doing so, because that would bruise your banana-skin ego…But we both know the truth. You will take credit tonight for MY expertise.

    Your welcome, by the way.

Hopefully that means going out of state because Virginia wines are crap, and if you consider them among “your favorites” then my contempt for you is outmeasured only by my pity for your palate.

For someone who counts himself as one of the more educated wine afficionados of this blog, I think you underestimate the diversity and taste of VA wines. Have you been to any vineyards in the state, especially in the Western section? You don’t need to immerse yourself in European fine wines to keep your options open.

There are some particularly good wines in Virginia. You have to actually go out there and discover them. Unfortuntely, due to the humid climate and soil type, VA can’t grow certain grapes that would add a broad variety to their wine palate.

Sometimes you actually have to take a drive somewhere to discover something new. Especially in a state that has different personalities like VA. If you’re looking for new vineyards, try those close to the Wintergreen Resort. Their whites have delicate palates that range from the dry to the sweet.

One further note: I’ve been lurking here for a few weeks since something bigger has drawn my attention elsewhere. As my husband and I have been packing up our house here in SE Virginia, I have noticed, with great hilarity, your chastisement of WE’s “pettiness.” Perhaps, you’ve overlooked some of your (and ZA’s) not so dignified rejoinders to many members of this blog.

Nah, we often overlook the ugly in both our personalities and our wine preferences. Perhaps, you should stay away from the more tanin-laden reds that hail from Portugal? They don’t go well with anything.

As to VA, while I hate the SE portion with it’s traffic conjestion and urban ghettos, I do like its Western rural corners where I’ve uncovered both historical, natural, and vintner beauties to be sure.

I have been to about five vineyards for tastings (where I tried probably 6 wines each) and tried probably half a dozen others on different occasions. There have been ones that are okay, but the relative quality didn’t justify the relatively high price.

I’ve tasted other than the German knock-offs they produce and they’re okay. A lot of these vineyards get exposure through word of mouth and catch on. They can be expensive and they’re investing a lot of money into producing German knock-offs when they’ll never really be the same as the original.

I wouldn’t say knock offs. That is like saying California Chardonnay is a knock off of Chablis because they use the same grape. The fact of the matter is that German varietals are the type that can grow in that pretty harsh environment. NY tends to the drier side of German, which is nice.

Isn’t that what you’ve been using since you lost your pinky finger during that unfortunate accident involving fireworks and moonshine? Or, do you substitute using your “3rd pinky finger?”

Good luck with the move. SE Virginia is as messed up as NOVA. I hope you find a nicer corner of the state.

Being as that my husband is in the military, there will no longer be further opportunity to explore any “nicer” corners of the state. We are moving to Colorado so I don’t anticipate “willingly” moving back to VA or any other part of the Eastern seaboard.

It wasn’t an amicable split. You are correct if not as blunt as I would be. SE Virginia is a hellhole and I’ve been to NOVA and both are overcrowded as hell. I will probably see similar trends in Colorado as I’ve seen in VA- illegal aliens- if I ever go back into teaching.

I will miss the Western part of the state. The people were nice and unpretentious, the natural surrounds were scenic, and the wine was wonderful.

Good luck in your wine hunt BTW. If your meat is a chicken/fish I recommend a nice White Zinfandel (Berringer/Vendage- slightly fruity with a strawberry finish). If it’s a beef I recommend a Merlot. There’s some nice Spanish and South American wines that do nicely for the palate and are light on the budget.

I’m not the wine afficionado that Chaps is (though I learned a lot about wine as a bartender). I had the opportunity to try some red wines in Spain and France and found the Spanish had deeper notes whereas the French seemed a bit more full-bodied.

If all else fails- make some mixed drinks like Martinis or Margaritas. They’re easy to make and nobody cares what “vintage” they are!

Ha, couldn’t resist. Old bartender joke.

Bistros and gastropubs. A return to more comfort food.

Though I do love me some tapas (or mezze, or antojitos).

You know, you may be right. However, in my hometown of Ithaca, NY where some of the most pretentious people you could ever meet reside (I’m talking professors and students) anything that appeals to a discriminating palate will do. Especially if it makes you feel superior while eating/drinking it. You’d be surprised how “unindependent” some of these elitists can be.

Perhaps, the hip thing now is, believe it or not, fondue (which I think hailed from the ’70′s). Or is it sushi? I know of at least one fondue restaurant in Manitou Springs, CO (outside Colorado Springs) which my husband and I avoided like the plague. Cheese is the main item on the menue along with some secondary items. However, since my husband despises cheese, we can’t “stomach” such a place.

Some trends should never be resurrected under any circumstances.

    And that includes chocolate fountains.

There are a few fondue places around here. I think it can be fun but I’ll be damned if I am going to pay to cook my own food. I bought a fondue pot and can make a better bourgonone broth to cook in.

I was thinking comfort food also and home cooking and baking as a trend. Survival food.
Not sure what a gastropub is.
Here it St. Louis, we have at least one Peruvian restaurant and a couple of Afghan kabob houses. Kabob houses aren’t new but Afghan is.
Also, that places that serves all ethnic varieties of noodles.

I can’t for the life of me understand what is so fun about fondue. I like a nice, hot cheese on my hamburger (when I eat red meat) but as a gourmet dining experience I don’t get it. I think Europe took all of the experimental gourmet dining out of me.

Yeah, there was a revival of the 60′s or 70′s fondue ski lodge thing here with a place called The Melting Pot.
It’s considered a good first date spot.
If you find you have no chemistry, you can at least talk about how to play with the food. LOL

    Here it St. Louis,

I was in St. Louis about 2 years ago. One of the things i really wanted to do was go to Smokie O’s and try the snoot. The one day I had free to do so I walked from my hotel near the arch, maybe 1.5 miles, having to zig zag across highways and feeling dead certain I was going to be mugged at any point. When I got there….closed for the day for a funeral.

That aside, my wife and I really enjoyed the city, especially the great music. We had a great meal at Eleven Eleven Mississippi. Wish we would have had a couple more days.

Not so much the cheese course, but cooking various meats and veggies in a boiling broth or oil. Many cultures have a similar thing (like a Chinese hot pot).

I think perhaps anything Asian, like Thai or New Asian cuisine is what’s in. I’ll really miss the Thai restaurants here in SE Virginia. Ah, well- Chinese is just as good I guess.

Good perception of the safety of downtown St. Louis.
You picked a huge winner with Eleven Eleven Mississippi. Haven’t eaten there myself but know it is an A list here.

Maybe I am just numbed by east coast prices, but I thought it was really reasonably priced for the quality. Our bill would have been at least $50 higher for an equivalent meal (with drinks, wine, etc…) in DC.
