The Cone of Shame Awards

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 20, 2009 04:09 PM

Ever since we saw Up, our family has made a game of giving out “Cone of Shame” awards. Thought it would make a great blog feature, too.

The inaugural award winners:

Barbara Boxer, for last week’s naked display of liberal condescension, vapidity, and tone-deafness in her “I’ve got a black person’s report right here!” rejoinder to National Black Chamber of Commerce head Harry Alford’s testimony against cap and trade.

Here’s your Cone of Shame, ma’am:

And gotta fit one on Chris Dodd, for lobbyist-bashing hypocrisy in Washington second only to Team Obama’s.

Wear it proudly, corruptocrat:

And on the other side of the aisle, one for lovesick S.C. GOP Gov. Mark Sanford — still in office penning apologies claiming God on his side, quoting scripture, and promising to be more “humble” and “contrite” while spending less time “fighting the tide.” Which appears to mean giving in to the state Legislature more often to save his political hide.

He needs a muzzle and a box of Kleenex with his Cone of Shame:

Goldman Sachs, for short selling the American people.

“Financial firms, we now know, directed vast quantities of capital into the construction of unsellable houses and empty shopping malls. They increased risk rather than reducing it, and concentrated risk rather than spreading it. In effect, the industry was selling dangerous patent medicine to gullible consumers.”

Goldman, famously, made a lot of money selling securities backed by subprime mortgages — then made a lot more money by selling mortgage-backed securities short, just before their value crashed. All of this was perfectly legal, but the net effect was that Goldman made profits by playing the rest of us for suckers.”

“The bottom line is that Goldman’s blowout quarter is good news for Goldman and the people who work there. It’s good news for financial superstars in general, whose paychecks are rapidly climbing back to precrisis levels. But it’s bad news for almost everyone else.”

I like Bill Engvall’s idea of signs.

    I just hate stupid people.

They should have to wear signs that just say “I’m stupid.” That way you wouldn’t rely on them, would you? You wouldn’t ask them anything.

It would be like, “Excuse me…oops, never mind, I didn’t see your sign.”

It’s like before my wife and I moved from Texas to California our house was full of boxes and there was a u-Haul truck in our driveway. My friend comes over and says, “Hey, You moving?”

“Nope. We just pack our stuff up once or twice a week. Just to see how many boxes it takes. Here’s your sign.”

Cone of shame for Sen Boxer? Not too sure about that.

Sen Boxer did not say the following -

“I’ve got a black person’s report right here!”

Sen Boxer, actually said the following -

    ” . . . then we’re gonna put the NAACP resolution that passed saying . . . ”

I understand the intent, yet it would have been more honest to have offered a qualification stating that “Sen Boxer could have made the statement, “I’ve got a black person’s report right here!” the way she introduced the NAACP document.”

Or, “Sen Boxer seems to be saying, “I’ve got a black person’s report right here!” when she introduced the NAACP document.”

As presented, one can believe that those were her actual words. Because quotations were used.

Moreover, Sen Boxer wanted other documents put into the record, too. Including other documents that had nothing to do with race.

Did you see Sen Boxer mention the Pew Study, and then after dust up, Exxon? The guy had no problem with the Pew Study or Exxon being placed in the record.

The guy is a Rev Sharpton wannabe. He, like the Rev Sharpton, looks for insults even in the most ridiculous and mundane circumstances.

In fact he was hot to trot before Sen Boxer mentioned the NAACP. Did you see the exchange about where he lived and being from California? That exchange was not helpful.

It could have been settled by one of them taking a deep breath, instead of interrupting one another, and stating that the he was from California, born and bred, and now lives in Maryland. Well, he did say something to that effect, but there was no deep breath, no pause to absorb the statement, because they continued to interrupt one another. He even volunteered that he was in California before Sen Boxer lived there. Not helpful.

He added that he has property in California that he pays taxes on. Why? Was he trying to defend himself because he may have believed Sen Boxer was attempting to challenge his Californian bona fides?

Sen Boxer said this was a ‘freindly’ exchange and the guy seemed bothered, if not agitated, as if he had been at this hearing for ten straight hours without a bathroom break. I got the sense the guy was ready to pop.

Not seen on the linked clip, but it was alluded to, was the mention of jobs. Sen Boxer challenged him to come to California to see the jobs. Maybe the guy took issue because he thought she was calling him a liar.

Nope. Mr Alford was ready to call the Liz Taylor movie ‘National Velvet’ racist because the horse was black.

Yep, this guy is a Rev Sharpton wannabe.

And the list could go on indefinitely…

And I really like that cone of silence option, too.

The businessman in question was irritated because of the nature of the meeting. He’s the one who stands to lose. He doesn’t need Boxer telling him to be a good little boy & agree with the other folks of the same color.

I FINALLY saw a DU posting today reagrding the confrontation between Boxer and Mr. Alford’s of the Black Chamber of Commerce. While I might argue the need for a “Black” Chamber of Commerce, he was absolutely correct in taking her to task. To the DUmmies however, he was everything from a ***hole to a “Republican” (Shocking!) For daring to question her he was reviled, which I did not find to be a big surprise.

I am not defending Sen Boxer. I am making observations.

I don’t know why Mr. Alford was irritated, but I am glad that you agree, that he was in fact irritated. And, irritated before Sen Boxer produced the NAACP document.

BTW, what does Mr. Alford stand to lose? And, Sen Boxer never said he should agree, or disagree, with anything. Did she?

Has anyone mentioned John Edwards? Just reminded myself of what he did for the cost of medicine with his lawsuits saying that OB’s caused cerebral palsy. Resulted in marked increase in c-sections with no decrease in the percentage of babies born with cerebral palsy. He kept the money and ran for president. Put his cone on upside down so we can’t see his face.
