Report: Supermax beds being cleared for Gitmo detainees

By Michelle Malkin  •  July 23, 2009 05:54 PM

Make room for jihadi! Tim Sumner reports at 9/11 Families for a Safe & Strong America that the Obama administration is shuffling prisoners and clearing out beds for Gitmo detainees.

The news comes as the Senate prepares to vote on Sen. Inhofe’s amendment to keep Gitmo detainees off American soil.

Read the whole report and pass it on:

Since June 30, President Barack Obama has cleared two dozen beds at Supermax for Gitmo detainees and today Senate Democrats will attempt to block a vote on Senator Jim Inhofe’s amendment to the Defense Authorization bill (S.1390) for FY 2010. The amendment would prohibit the transfer of detainees from Guantanamo to any facility in the United States. (A final vote on the Defense authorization may come as early as this evening.) In addition, Senator Inhofe is also sponsoring the ‘Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility Safe Closure Act of 2009′ (S.370). We join Sen. Inhofe in asking you to call your Senators today and demand that they go on record, to vote ‘yea’ or ‘nay’ to keep terrorists out of America.

Sign Sen. Inhofe’s petition here.

Then make a call to your Senators (202) 224-3121 and ask them about this report.

Do they support the Gitmo shuffle: Yes or no?

The Guantanamo Bay detention camp will close by next January, US Vice-President Joe Biden said on Thursday, adding that decisions on all inmates were likely “well before January”.

“We are going through every single detainee’s records … to make a judgment about whether or not they should be tried (or) … released and if so, what country might take them if we can’t get them back to the country of origin because they’re going to be tortured or mistreated,” he said.

For Pres Obama to have any level of success on this issue he needs to say he was convinced by so-and-so that it wasn’t so much the place, as it was how it was being run, and the things that were done there early. Since that time things have changed and Gitmo will remain open with the following updated revisions. He could even make the announcement there.

Even more important than that is, what are we going to do with these people? Some have already been let go, and in some circumstances it did not work out well.

There are questionable things that have been done in the past, and that is water under the bridge. You can’t keep pointing backwards. Pres Obama owns this and has to get it done, . . . right.

Resolve these cases within legislatively approved parameters, and move on.

Iraq had the right idea. They just renamed abu Graib as Baghdad Central Prison and hung up some signs telling guards to show respect. Couldn’t we do the same thing with Gitmo?

Just rename it “Hotel California”, hang up some signs, redecorate a little, and call it fixed. It would save us a lot of money and keep us safe at the same time. How could Democrats reject such a win-win proposition?

I’m sure that if Obama were to announce to the world that he’s fixed all the nasty problems at Gitmo he inherited from Bush, they would believe him. Isn’t that what he did with the economic crisis? He put some stimulus window dressing on it and pronounced it fixed.

Opposition rising to possibility of Guantanamo prisoners at Supermax The Gazette (Colorado Springs; May 23, 2009

But McFadyen’s point is made: the Florence Federal Correctional Complex, 40 miles down the road from Colorado Springs, is not in the middle of nowhere, as Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California said the other day during debate over what to do with war-on-terrorism detainees at the Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

    and

A lot of Coloradans are getting their backs up when ADX Florence – aka Supermax – enters the conversation. Supermax, the toughest of the Florence prisons, is home to America’s worst inmates. McFadyen called it “the most maximum-security federal penitentiary in the country, if not the world.”

Other sites mentioned by military officials as possible locations for Guantanamo inmates include the Army prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the Marines’ Camp Pendleton, Calif., and the Navy’s brig in Charleston, S.C. All are military operations, so the detainees would not have to be transferred from the military justice system to the civil system.

“Military detainees should not be transported to and held at Supermax because it is not a military facility,” said Sen. Michael Bennet. Colorado’s other U.S. senator, Mark Udall, also opposes such transfers. A spokeswoman said “his strong preference would be for detainees to stay within the military prison system.”

When Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate intelligence committee, said Wednesday that Supermax was suitable for Gitmo detainees in part because “it isn’t in a neighborhood, it isn’t in a community,” U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn pounced.

“I resent the fact that Senator Feinstein would be so dismissive of the nearly 20,000 people who live in Florence and nearby Cañon City,” Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, said in a news release.

I thought they were POWS, according to our liberal government, and “protected” by the Geneva Conventions (which they aren’t). Transferring them, indirectly implies that they are crimminals. So, let’s try them and give them the needles. Besides, Gitmo is a country club prison, compared to Supermax. I guess they’ll have to change all the routines, for everyone, to comply with their “religion”. That will be interesting.

Anyway you understand that, the security of America’s most hardened and dangerous criminals is being compromised to accommodate the transfers from Gitmo.

Even if the terrorist are securely held, the administration is endangering the citizenry by diminished security for the current Supermax occupants who are being shuffled around into a less optimum level of security. The whole purpose of Supermax is to provide a failsafe level of security for these worst of the worst. But now they are giving up their beds for Obama’s political theatre.

I don’t care if they are brown, white, or green. I don’t want foreign terrorists brought into our country, period. I know it’s difficult for liberals to see any difference between American citizens and foreigners, but the rest of us don’t really think we should bring all the world’s criminals and terrorists into our prisons. How long before some liberal judge decides to release these terrorists on a technicality? (Like that’s never happened before.)

Then there’s the problem of a network of terrorist brothers around the world who would like to break these guys out or seek revenge on their behalf. Would you want to be a guard at supermax knowing that you or your family could be targets? What worldwide terrorist organizations did Rudolph, McVeigh, or the Unabomber belong to? (The Unabomber was an environmentalist nut but I don’t know if he was a member of ELF.)

In any case, how does moving these guys from Gitmo to the U.S. benefit us in any way?
