Obama dismantles Bush/Cheney shadow government plan… just kidding

By Doug Powers  •  July 28, 2009 03:57 PM

Remember when many Bush/Cheney critics went apoplectic when they learned about Bush/Cheney’s dark, mysterious, slithering-under-the-floorboards “shadow government” plans? Remember when liberals expelled their latte in a fine mist at the fact that all this power was being concentrated in the White House? Here’s how that’s being addressed with Obama in charge:

The White House has taken on a wider role in forming a backup government in case a crisis forces officials to leave Washington.

(One man’s crisis is another man’s nirvana, but I digress…)

Government officials familiar with the plans tell The New York Times that the initiative began during the final months of the Bush administration, and the Obama administration decided to leave it in place.

The White House Military Office will now lead the way in installing a “shadow government” should officials have to leave the capital because of a terrorist strike or some other catastrophe. The contingency plans include moving those officials to Mount Weather, Va. and running backup computer systems.

I don’t know what the exact future holds if Washington is attacked with nukes or incapacitated due to a natural disaster — such as a tsunami or a floor collapse at a strip club — but I do know that it’ll probably involve some kick-butt 747 fly-by photo-ops over the damage.

What promised to be the “most transparent administration in history” is already operating in the shadows, so I don’t even want to know how shadowy the shadow version might be.

I shall make it my patriotic duty to visit all of DC’s strip clubs to make sure they are uh….up to code.

No no. You don’t have to thank me. We all have a role to play in our nation’s security. I do, however, take donations. A few folded up ones or maybe a fiver would be nice.

Is it a good idea to tell terrorists where you’ll be going?

Is it being done as a feint?
Would terrorists actually go for the “fake”; i.e., be fooled into attacking the publicized, phony place?
    Are terrorists that predictably stupid?

“Shades of night are falling and I’m lonely
Standing on the corner feeling blue
    Sweethearts out for fun
    Pass me one by one
Guess I’ll wind up like I always do
    With only

    Me and my shadow
    Strolling down the avenue
    Me and my shadow
Not a soul to tell our troubles to
But when it’s twelve a clock
    We climb the stair
    We never knock
    ‘Cause nobody’s there
    Just me and my shadow
    All alone and feeling blue
And when it’s twelve a clock
    We climb the stair
    We never knock
    ‘Cause nobody’s there
    Just me and my shadow
    All alone and feeling blue”

And I think that this is in some ways what happened to the Patriot Act Porkulus. I mean you remember that there was no real debate about that. It was so quick after 9/11 inauguration that it was introduced that people felt very intimidated by the administration.

This is the return to the way things were during the Cold War. The Military Office also had an extensive succession list if the nuclear war that never came arrived and killed most Federal officials. Perhaps they’ll re-start the SAC under Cheyenne Mountain, re-start the Congressional shelter at the Greenbrier Resort and the POTUS one under Camp David.

FEMA could be replaced with a new civil defense command and no one would complain.

I think this administration is much more mundane. A 55 gallon drum of botox submerged off a pier in San Fran, a bicycle and a Google Map of an escape route from St. Louis to East St. Louis for the Pizza Guy, and an abandoned shopping cart full of Momjeans under an overpass in Virginia will get these guys through…

Moreover, there are safe rooms, bunkers if you will, in the WH and at the VP residence. Yep, there are safe places to conduct the business of Government.
