Pelosi: The meltdown

By Doug Powers  •  July 30, 2009 03:19 PM

It’s happening — opposition to Hope and Change™ is starting to take its toll. Nancy Pelosi is starting to act like somebody spiked her Botox with traces of arsenic, and the descent into paranoid madness is somewhat reminiscent of Captain Queeg on the witness stand in The Caine Mutiny:

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday ramped up her criticism of insurance companies, accusing them of unethical behavior and working to kill a plan to create a new government-run health plan.

“It’s almost immoral what they are doing,” Pelosi said to reporters, referring to insurance companies. “Of course they’ve been immoral all along in how they have treated the people that they insure,” she said, adding, “They are the villains. They have been part of the problem in a major way. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening.”

The Speaker will prove without a shadow of a doubt — and with geometric logic — that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox did exist, but the private insurance companies took it!

Pelosi also said that private insurers oppose government health care because “they don’t want the competition.” The government doesn’t want competition either, Nance — that’s why people like Bernie Madoff are rotting in prison.

Nancy scoffs at her poll numbers (she’s tied in the popularity ratings with O.J. Simpson and genital herpes), but that certainly can’t be a comfort for her collegues up for re-election in districts that aren’t as safe as hers, and neither are polls like this:

The New York Times/CBS poll shows:

Sixty-nine percent of respondents believe Obama’s plan will hurt the quality of their own healthcare.

Seventy-three percent believe it would limit their access to tests and treatment.

Sixty-two percent believe Democrats’ proposals would require them to change doctors.

Seventy-six believe healthcare reform will lead to them paying higher taxes.

A whopping 77 percent expect their healthcare costs to rise.

Darn those private insurance companies!

Incidentally, if you vote out an old liberal pollutant next November, you’ll qualify for a rebate under the private-sector’s answer to the Cash for Clunkers program.

Looks like the Dems are going to start demonizing insurance companies again, which they have let up slightly over the past few weeks. The liberals are at war with large segments their own country and making enemies of people that didn’t even know they were agents of evil.

If any of the Dem leadership had ever held a job outside of government they would know that profits are good. You see Nancy, when companies don’t have profits they have what are know as losses. And when they have those losses are large and prolonged they collapse and go into bankruptcy. Sort of like GM and some other large companies that were evil when they made lots of money.

“For-profit” firms come under constant attack from activists and members of Congress.

Thus, a recent news release from the AFL-CIO began with this evidently alarming fact: “Profits at 10 of the country’s largest publicly traded health insurance companies rose 428 percent from 2000 to 2007.” Even had the figures been correct — they weren’t — we are seeing the same circus. Profit is the enemy. America could be made pure, if only profit could be purged.

This attitude was wrong in 2006. It is wrong now. High profits are excellent news. When corporate earnings reach record levels, we should be celebrating.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/29/AR2009072902626.html?nav=rss_opinion/columns

    THE FACTS

    1. Health Ins companies like any other company is trying to make a profit. That’s what business does. Many of them are publicly traded so their shareholders actually like this idea.

    2. By the time they pay the claims, pay for their employees salaries and benefits, pay for the facilities, pay for the computer systems involved in doing the work they are not making as much as you would assume.

    3. THE GOVERNMENT GETS A HUGE CUT FROM THESE COMPANIES. They very stringent regulations with unreasonable requirements and when the insurance company can’t meet those requirements they are fined huge amounts.

Nobody makes more off of health insurance more than the Federal Government.

Nancy brings up an important point with her rantings. If an insurance company misbehaves, there is always a government power to appeal to for redress. However, if the government is running the show and misbehaves, there is no other power to appeal to for justice. Their word is final. Nancy inadvertently makes a great case against government-run health care.

They can cry all they want about the big bad profit makers. The point of this it is UNCONSTITUTIONAL!

Insurance companies and government are in completely different situations.
Insurance companies are not controlled by the Constitution while government is
    expressly controlled by the Constitution.

I think a major issue regarding ObamaCare is its blatant violation of our
Constitutional Right to Privacy. If you recall, Roe v. Wade was based upon a
    woman’s right to privacy.

Every bit of control regarding “counseling”, “evaluations” and comparative
effective standards” or any decision made by anyone other than the patient
regarding what treatment is appropriate, available or desired is NONE OF
    GOVERNMENT’S BUSINESS.

Any attempt by government to restrict care to any group is unconstitutional.
Any attempt by government to participate in any “living will” is
unconstitutional. Any inquires by government regarding the patients dying
wishes regarding care is unconstitutional. All are violations of our right to
    privacy.

If Government wants to be in the health care insurance BUSINESS, then it CANNOT
make any decisions regarding age or prognosis probability. It CAN not deny any
treatment requested by the patient that results from patient-doctor discussions.
It cannot participate in or affect via pressure on health care providers, any
    recommendations of care.

Therefore, anything within the bill, other than allocation of funds and
establishment of education programs and clinics, that attempts to ration or
limit available health care is unconstitutional.

If the Right to Privacy controls Roe v. Wade, then it likewise controls here.

What will it take to vote these people out of office. Frankly, we need to vote virtually every incumbent out of office in 2010. None of them deserve another 2 years in office.

War, you know we pretty much all agree with that sentiment.

But we also know it is ONLY possible, and far from likely.

With almost no effort, I can put up 20 names of Ds that we have very little chance of deposing. Pelosi is one.

In most years, 95% of incumbents are returned to power. In almost no instance are less than 90% re-elected.

Plus, I have argued here many times that changing the names on the desks will not work the change we need.

Blue Shield has a headquarters office in San Francisco in her district.

If we can convince Madame Speaker to have a Town Hall Meeting in San Francisco, the Blue Shield employees should plan to attend and have their questions ready!

America’s Health Insurance Plans, an association of “nearly 1,300 member companies providing health insurance coverage to more than 200 million Americans,” sent this statement when I asked them about Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s classification of insurance companies as “immoral” “villains,” “carpet-bombing” the debate:

“Health care reform is far too important to be dragged down by divisive political rhetoric from Washington, DC.

“Health plans have been working in support of bipartisan health care reform for three years. Our community has proposed guaranteed coverage for pre-existing conditions, discontinuing rating based on a person’s health status or gender, and a personal coverage requirement to get everyone into the system. We have proposed far-reaching administrative reforms to slash paperwork, reduce medical errors, and ensure doctors and hospitals can focus on patient care.

“Countless physicians, hospitals and employers, and millions of concerned citizens agree that a government-run health care plan will dismantle employer-based coverage, bankrupt local hospitals, and break the promise made to the American people that those who like their health plan can keep it.

“Health plans remain committed to working constructively in support of bipartisan health care reform.”

AHIP CEO Karen Ignani was among the health representatives and lobbyists on the list of folks visiting the White House. I wonder if Obama knows with whom he’s fraternizing, according to the Speaker.

You are absolutely right RTater! And she knows this is a problem because for the first time in years there is no activity for her PAC to the Future for the 2010 cycle.
    http://www.opensecrets.org/pacs/lookup2.php?strID=C00344234&cycle=2010

Instead she seems to be using her own Campaign Committee to raise funds for the 2010 cycle.

OK, how about we get government OUT of health care?!?!?

WE KNOW where the great market distortions are from, and how to remedy them.

Who says the system is NOT changing?

I can point to evidence that it IS…and HAS changed appreciably in the last decade in very good ways. Markets INNOVATE. Governments STAGNATE.

So when people try to defraud those insurance companies, they are actually doing social justice? Like Robin Hood? Cool! I could do a slip and fall with a big medical claim in Walmart and get those evil corporate retailers too, two social justice birds with one stone, ya know. Then I could sue the doctor for malpractice and really get my social activist career going. Thanks for the idea Nan!

In a week during which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paints private health insurers with a broad brush, claiming they oppose government health care because “they don’t want the competition”, I am realizing the benefits of that competition, finally canceling an HMO with one carrier which, just in the past five years doubled my premiums.

I have found a new plan with another carrier, 45% less expensive than my old plan. Yes, I’ll have to pay more for doctor visits, but given how infrequently I go to the doctor, I’ll still be saving a lot (a real lot) of money. And I even have dental coverage with my new plan, something I did not have with my old carrier.

Had I gone to an insurance broker earlier than I had, I could have saved as much as $5,000 over the past four years alone. My mistake was not realizing the extent of the industry competition and only trying to get a new plan with my old carrier. Only when I discussed my options with a friend who happens to be an insurance broker (whom I owe a steak dinner–more on this anon) did I realize the options available to me.

It seems that many of those who, like Mrs. Pelosi, decry the health insurance industry are unaware of the choices we have.

One looks at all the wack-jobs from California that are in charge at the Federal level… Pelosi, Waxman, Miller, Waters, Boxer… to name a few.. and then you look at the stellar job their home state has done with the management of that state’s business.

Highest tax rates… bankrupt government… people and businesses leaving in droves… that’s what we have to look forward to on a National level if things keep going the way they are going.
