I have decided to wait to buy Michelle's book until it drops to number two on the New York Times best seller list to see if I can jump start it back to number one. I hope I don't have to by it until after the next election!

End of life issues are for those who do not walk with the Lord Jesus Christ are just that, end of life. But to those of us who walk with the Lord know that even those who would shorten our life here on this earth will walk eternally with the Lord with out worry to sickness, wealth, or the other often mundane cares of this world. Those of us who call ourselves Christians know or should know that those who do not walk with the Lord and do not live the life style prescribe by Him and the scriptures will receive their just rewards. As I reach my end of sojourn on this earth I am thankful that I lived when the United States of America was at it zenith, when men knew freedom, when the world envied our system government, when we lead the world in technology, and when every day people prospered as no one has ever done in history. It makes me angry to see what is fast becoming of our once great country.

I've been in favor of an "advanced directive" or living will, for a long time. Being in the medical field, I've been with patients that are in their own "living hell". Imagine being awake, but uncommunicative, or not able to move at all, except for eyelids; relying on help from a ventilator and feeding tube. When they pass, it a relief to us, the family, and I'm sure the patient also. Ethically, we have to do our outmost to keep them alive, though, privately, we would like them to go, especially, if they develop pressure ulcers. The government has no right to get involved with deciding who gets care and who is "pointless". It opens a door to a very dangerous prescedent. The day I get an order to "pull the plug", not from the patient/POA family, but from a government law/regulation, is the day I turn in my medical license, and go flip hamburgers. I'd be happier.

...At the end, I came very close to throwing a lamp at my TV when the guy from WSJ, of all places, threw in a great stereotype of anyone critical of Obama’s plans...

The WSJ-types are like that sometimes. The ones I see at UW-Seattle in the Economics dept. (of which I will be graduated from at the end of Fall Quarter 2009) were once very enthusiastic about Obama, but have since been talking about him with a look of chagrin-and even "WTF?!".

I enjoy watching such comeuppances.

NestingHawk,
Eat something before trying to post more than one sentence at a time, please.

This sentence
_______________
It would not be “pointless” to incur further risk to my life to kill someone trying to hurt me, but I might legitimately deem it “not worthwhile.”
_______________________

would probably make more sense as

It would not be “pointless” to incur further risk to my life to AVOID killING someone trying to hurt me, but I might legitimately deem it “not worthwhile.”

Sorry about that. And I hit the preview button on that one, too.

Happyscrapper,
I am not saying that there are not circumstances under which a person could rationally choose to have a living will stating there are circumstances under which they will no longer want life-saving procedures, and under which it would be ethically permissable to abide by that person's CLEARLY STATED AND DOCUMENTED wishes, or even under which the only ethically permissable thing to do would be to abide by that person's clearly stated and documented wishes. I am only saying there are no circumstances under which the prolonging of life is pointless. Life is a point in itself. Life is one of the two things I believe to be sacred; free will is the other. And I would never, ever tell someone who wanted to live, or who was trying to decide whether they wanted to live, that prolonging their life was "pointless." In fact, I would also never tell someone who clearly did not want their life prolonged, no matter the circumstances, that prolonging the life was "pointless," even if I agreed that ethically people were bound by stated wishes of the person in question not to prolong it. Even if I did not believe life in and of itself to be sacred, I would have no right to judge another life pointless, under any circumstances. Because of my beliefs, I also don't really feel I have a right to declare my own life "pointless," but I can see more room for debate when someone is talking about their own life. Remember, too, that "pointless" and "not worthwhile" are not exactly the same thing, though I admit that I think I could pretty much substitute one for the other in what I said above and still feel it true. I would place more importance on that difference in matters of self-defense. It would not be "pointless" to incur further risk to my life to kill someone trying to hurt me, but I might legitimately deem it "not worthwhile."
I hope I'm making sense. I need to go try to make some toast without burning it this time so I'll have eaten something today :)

Prolonging life is NEVER pointless.
Not sure I agree with that. I have a living Will which states that I don't want to be kept alive by a respirator if I am clinically brain dead or have a terminal disease with no hope of recovery. I absolutely do not wish to be kept alive under those circustances. I believe in an afterlife and don't want anyone keeping me here in a state of suspended animation, hovering between life and death while I linger on unaware of anything. This sounds hideous to me. I agree that life is precious and should be preserved whenever possible and feasable. But I want to be in control of my final destiny by having that living Will on file at my hospital, with my lawyer, and in the hands of my loved ones...all of them.

I am deeply immersed in MM's book today! It is awesome! And speaking of awesome, I saw the George Stuffanappleupyourass show this a.m. and MM again did a fantastic job. She was on a panel of four...and of course was outnumbered by the libs 4-1(that includes little Georgie). In the small amount of time they allowed her to speak, she rocked! At the end, I came very close to throwing a lamp at my TV when the guy from WSJ, of all places, threw in a great stereotype of anyone critical of Obama's plans. He said the criticism is coming mostly from the south (you know, those crackers who cling...etc.) and from conservatives (you know, those radical right-wing extremists), you get the picture. Just a little "dig" at the end of the program and no time for Michelle to respond, of course. She would have eaten his lunch. Sigh. I fear the "ladies" on the view are going to be even uglier than usual tomorrow. Pray for Michelle. Those dames play rough and are totally radical moonbats. They will interrupt, talk over her...and how much do you want to bet none of them will even look at MM when they talk? I will watch it. I figure, if MM is willing to sit with those devils, the least I can do is watch and pray.
