Sen. Roberts on Gitmo jihadi dump: Not in my backyard
Pushback from GOP Sen. Pat Roberts of Kansas on the Obama plans to dump Gitmo detainees at Ft. Leavenworth.

Via The Hill’s Michael O’Brien:
Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) threatened to “shut down the Senate” before he allows terrorist suspects to be relocated to Leavenworth, Kansas.
Roberts heatedly pledged to prevent detainees currently housed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to be relocated to a prison facility in his home state.
“I’ve said it once. I’ll say it many more times: Not in my back yard. Not in Kansas,” Roberts said in a press conference with Kansas reporters. “I will shut down the Senate before I’ll let that happen.”
The Associated Press reported Monday that the Obama administration is examining the Kansas facility as well as a Michigan prison as destination for accused terrorists after they close down the Guantanamo Bay facility.

Good for him. If they feel like they have to close Gitmo, I’d still be in favor of moving the terrorists to one of the more remote Alleutians.

Why not relocate them to Chicago? I understand so many world-class criminals come from Chicago. They’d feel at home.
Relocate them to the White House Preening Room (gym). The little Napoleon can greet them in full Kenyan regalia. A real multi-culti photo op.
They can send them to Texas if they’ll let us use them for target practice.
I think Jennifer Granholm is dumb enough to take them in Michigan.
I hope Janet N. doesn’t hear about this remark. She might consider it a terrorist threat and throw Sen. Roberts in with the rest of the “right-wing extremists” when Obama moves them from Gitmo to Kansas.
Is the prison anywhere near Dearborn perhaps? If so they will have plenty of people to come and visit them, perhaps even help them gain an early release if you get what I am saying.
I think they should relocate them to the D.C. area. If they are so safe, let them live in the neighborhoods that Congress lives in. Or next door to ACLU headquarters.
After all, these are just misguided victims of American aggression, right?
I still say, take Alcatraz back from the Parks Department and put them Where San Fran Nan can keep an eye on them from her house.
I nominate Nunivak Island, AK. It’s current population is 210, it’s surface area is 1,631.97 square miles. Plenty of room. Even if most of it is a wildlife refuge.
Or use oil platform technology to set one up offshore. As long as it’s inside the Arctic Circle.

They are looking at a facility in Standish Michigan (Northern Michigan) that’s about to close down. They even tossed in Southern Michigan Prison which is here in my home town (the birthplace of the Republican party of all places!) all of the callers to the local radio show said hell no.
We do have several major problems though, Debbie Stabenow, Carl Levin, and we threw out a solid conservative in Tim Wahlberg and replaced him with Democrat Mark Shower (Thank goodness Wahlberg is running again) Let’s not forget out wonderful Governor, Jennifer Granholm who’s done such a wonderful job in Michigan……we’re f#$@ked…..

We used to have a navy base on Adak Island. That should be good enough. And if they misbehave, we can always turn down the heat.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. We have the most insane, wrecking ball of economy destroying legislation in just about all of US history, and this guy is threatening to “shut down” the senate over the detainees??

That would definitely constitute cruel and unusual punishment to send the detainees there.
Nah, Adak has been closed. Keep going North to a better spot, Thule, Greenland. I guarantee you if you put them there, they will be scared to death to leave the building. I have never, ever, seen a place so cold. And I have lived in Maine, Great Lakes, and Iceland. Thule has them all beat by a mile.
If we do move them to the US put them as far north as possible build a building large enough to hold them with no insulation. You get 1 propane heater and a grill sized tank. If you survive the winter you can go. When it a a flimsy sheet metal wall that tank shoudl last a week or so, so bye bye. Enjoy you frozen hell.
I have a better idea. Seeing that the Libs are saying that it is too cruel to let the Gitmo Detainees suffer in a tropical paradise, I say we go the other direction.
We send them all up to the Artic and to appease the libs we can have them check on the global warming problem up close and personal.
See all fixed and we killed two birds with one stone saving billions in tax payer dollars….
Some small Aleutian Island may suffice as well! Just a 60 foot high wall, 20 feet thick, no roof. That ought to aid in their global warming observations

As for Sen. Roberts’s threat to shut down the Senate, grandstanding or not, the point is that if we allow these persons to be moved into our criminal justice system, there are all sorts of problems that can and probably will arise – read Debra Burlingame’s piece, please.
It’s far more than a case of NIMBYism – I wouldn’t want them on the Vineyard, much as I might joke about gifting Teddy with some lovely new neighbors.
I would think they merit house arrest. George Soros has a home big enough. Since Soros has funded the effort to close Gitmo and bankrolled the lawyers representing these poor darlings, he can have them.
Don’t forget to send Baraq Obeyme an email tomorrow with “Happy Birthday” in the subject line, and sign it “from all your Kenyan relatives”.

Be nice if someone got all fired up and threatened to shut down the Senate over any national healthcare or stimulus (so called) proposals. Both arguably a much greater threat to our liberty than some nutjob out in the middle of nowhere behind steel bars with a gun trained on his head. Just sayin…

We are not interested in having Terrorists here. Leavenworth, Kansas has enough prisoners as it is and the last thing they need is a few terrorists intermixed with the inmate population.

Actually, send them to Camp Tudo, the abandoned support base for Camp Century, rather than Thule main base. When I was there (Thule) in ‘77*78, all of the buildings at Tudo were filled with snow. The gym had 20 feet tall snowbank in it! There’s even a C-130 capable strip on-site:easy-in, never out.
How bad are things in Michigan? They actually *want* terrorists moved there.
btw; has no one in washington noticed that our prison system is recruitment central for black muslim converts. you know, a black goes in known as cassius clay and comes out mohammed ali. mohammed ali has been nothing that i have ever seen or heard except a true peace loving ambassador of good will for islam, but his name and story come to mind, while that of willie brown who came out ali babba doesn’t. but the entire nation of islam in the u.s. is full of parolee’s from our prison system.
I’d give them stationary bicycles hooked to generators for space heaters. If they want to stay warm, they have to work for it.

Kodiak Island seems pretty good to me. No Tattoo Midget, no Ricardo Montalban, no planes, no fantasies. Just a lot of really hungry (and non-picky equal opportunity) BEARS! Paint them with bacon grease and turn them loose in a really environmentally friendly paradise.

But this is my fantasy. No court will be able to find them guilty with the civilian legal system and the lack of Miranda rights, lack of proof, lack of witnesses that occurs after 8 years have gone by. Soldiers are not policeman and evidence collectors.
