Well, well: Dems revoke gag order on GOP health care chart

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 5, 2009 10:03 AM

The censors in the Democrat Party backed down because the GOP showed its spine. More, please!

Via Roll Call:

House Democrats agreed late last week to allow Republicans to send their constituents a mailing critical of the majority’s health care bills, after a two-week delay caused by Democratic allegations that the mailing was inaccurate.

The mailing was approved Friday night after a meeting between Franking Commission Chairwoman Susan Davis (D-Calif.) and Rep. Dan Lungren (R-Calif.), the top Republican on the Franking Commission, according to a GOP aide.

Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) also attended the meeting to help mediate between Davis and Lungren as they worked out a compromise, a senior Democratic aide said.

The dispute centered on a chart created by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Republican staff of the Joint Economic Committee to illustrate the organization of the Democratic health care plan. The chart illustrates the Democratic plan as a daunting tangle of agencies and bureaucratic procedures.

“Over the last couple of weeks there has been much discussion about the Republican Joint Economic Committee Health Care Chart,” said an e-mail sent Monday to Republicans from the GOP House Administration Committee staff. “We are pleased to report that the Democratic Members have removed their objections to using the chart.”

On a related front, GOP Rep. John Carter says the censors are interfering with his communications about Obamacare:

The Democrat who chairs a US House commission says a local representative has not been censored by the majority party, this as other claims of censorship in the House by Democrats emerge.

Monday, News 3 reported on District 31 Representative John Carter’s belief that wording of a message for a telephonic conference with constituents had been disallowed by Democrats on the Franking Commission.

Through that body — one made up of three Republican House members and three Democrats — free communication such as phone conferences and mailers is reviewed.

Carter says he wanted to use the phrase “House Democrats unveiled a government-run health care plan,” but he was told his call couldn’t take place until the wording was changed to “the House majority unveiled a public option health care plan.”

Tuesday, a spokesperson for the chairwoman of the Franking Commission, Rep. Susan Davis (D-California), told News 3 it was not staff of the Democratic commission members that asked for the change, but rather, Republicans.

…A request to Congresswoman Davis’ office for any documents that could substantiate that claim hasn’t been answered yet, and a spokesperson for Congressman Carter said Carter’s office had not heard it was Republican staff that had called for the changes in his phone message.

In the midst of his situation, Rep. Carter says more than 20 fellow Republicans have made it known to his office that Democrats through the Franking Commission have tried to block language they feel is improper to use in the free communication.

Every little thing they get away with emboldens them. Every time they are called on it, they lose some of that arrogance. Keep at them! Maybe our “representatives in Congress just needed a swift kick to get them jump-started. And maybe having the support of the people who are out there making our voices heard is helping them get their courage back. One can hope!! At any rate, every time the left is forced to step back, it advertises how much they are trashing our Constitution. They must not be allowed to stifle free speech!!

House Orders Up Three Elite Jets
    By Paul Singer
    Roll Call Staff
    Aug. 5, 2009, 12 a.m.

Last year, lawmakers excoriated the CEOs of the Big Three automakers for traveling to Washington, D.C., by private jet to attend a hearing about a possible bailout of their companies.

But apparently Congress is not philosophically averse to private air travel: At the end of July, the House approved nearly $200 million for the Air Force to buy three elite Gulfstream jets for ferrying top government officials and Members of Congress.

stillontheroad: Same way Hillary’s parents were inspired to name their daughter because of Sir Edmund Hillary’s ascent of Mt Everest in 1953. From her birth (in 1947) the family had just referred to her as “Hey, you!”
