SEIU and the “persuasion of power;” Update: St. Louis thuggery on tape

In May, I told you how the Service Employees International Union’s $61 million investment in Barack Obama paid off with cabinet appointments, executive orders, key personnel slots, and legislative goodies.
Now, the SEIU thugs are looking out for The Boss. In Tampa, Florida and St. Louis today, the Purple People turned out to give cover to members of Congress targeted by Tea Party activists and town hall protesters. For the first time, the town hall protests were marked by physical aggression. More on the St. Louis arrests of confrontational Obamacare activists here. (Just like Obama wanted: “In your face.”) This is no coincidence.
I’m excerpting a portion of my Culture of Corruption chapter on the SEIU. This is what you are up against.

“The persuasion of power”
Asked about his organizing philosophy, Andy Stern summed it up this way: “[W]e prefer to use the power of persuasion, but if that doesn’t work we use the persuasion of power.”
Stern and his shock troops have bullied companies from private equity firms to Burger King to food management company Aramark, who have resisted SEIU’s attempts to organizer their workers. The Purple People have organized aggressive protests and a “War on Greed” campaign to pound the employers into submission. One of the besieged targets, security provider Wackenhut Services, battled SEIU’s attempts to gain exclusive representation for its employees. The company already ten other unions representing its workers. Initially unbowed by a massive, malicious negative publicity campaign against them, Wackenhut blew the whistle:
The SEIU seeks membership growth through aggressive “corporate campaigns” that have a blunt message to employers, “Let us unionize your workforce or we will destroy your reputation.” This tactic has been used against a number of organizations to include Wal-Mart, Kaiser Permanente, Advocate Health Care, Catholic Healthcare West, and Sutter Health.
SEIU is attempting to coerce The Wackenhut Corporation and WSI to recognize it as the “exclusive” collective bargaining representative throughout Wackenhut. Wackenhut declined to enter into such an agreement. The SEIU responded with a corporate campaign that is intended to damage WSI’s reputation and relationships with our clients. Their campaign tactics include distributing misinformation, distortion and omission of fact through the media, conducting demonstrations in proximity of work sites in an effort to disrupt normal client operations, and aggressively attempting to intimidate or influence clients.
But after filing a racketeering lawsuit against the SEIU, a weary and drained Wackenhut entered into an agreement allowing its employees in nine cities to choose SEIU as its bargaining representative. Behold the “persuasion of power.”
Showing an appalling lack of concern for the well-being of its members, the SEIU upped the ante in a representation battle with the University of Miami in 2006. The union fought tooth and nail against a true, democratic unionizing election for campus janitors using a secure, federally monitored secret ballot. Stern personally escalated the dispute, joined the fasters, and demonized then-university president Donna Shalala (yes, that Donna Shalala of Clinton yore). She lashed back:
We are devastated that the union is risking the health and well-being of our students and the Unicco employees by sanctioning an activity as drastic as a hunger strike. Hunger strikes have never been used in this country to oppose an election. We have urged both parties to continue daily discussions until this issue is resolved. A free election for or against unionization is a federal statutory right.
In the end, the SEIU relented to a federally monitored election. But at what price? Five SEIU members were hospitalized, one with a minor stroke. Wackenhut Corporation chief operating officer Paul Donahue, expressing sympathy for the University of Miami’s plight, saw the big picture:
The bullying, protesting, harassment, contrived events and demands will continue indefinitely because the union has millions of dollars in dues money from hard working janitors and other service workers which can be spent on ruining the reputation of businesses instead of bettering the lives of those workers that contributed.
Indeed, no one has felt the blunt force – and physical danger — of Stern’s “persuasion of power” more than workers themselves.
In Oakland, Stern and his Washington crew imposed a trusteeship on a 150,000-member local that had publicly opposed SEIU strong-arm tactics. The D.C.headquarters (knee deep in ethical mud) accused the local – known as SEIU United Healthcare Workers West (UHW West) – of financial malpractice and misconduct. The local fought back, charging the Beltway union leaders with manufacturing the allegations to retaliate and to distract from Washington mismanagement. The UHW West president, Sal Rosselli, quit the SEIU Executive Board, and formed a new union in February 2009, which declared: “We’re tired of SEIU’s hostile tactics, threatening phone calls, their collusion with employers and governors like Blagojovich, and the corruption of Stern’s appointees like Local 6434 head Tyrone Freeman in Los Angeles, disgraced SEIU Executive Vice President Annelle Grajada, and the appointees who have just taken over what had been our local. We don’t trust them with our contracts, we don’t trust them with our dues—we just don’t trust them.”
In Philadelphia, Stern engineered the hostile takeover of a 150,000-member union representing garment and hospitality workers. Workers United had broken off from the national UNITE HERE union of 450,000 workers. Progressive New York Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez, citing SEIU’s agreement with Workers United, called Stern “hellbent on using classic corporate raider tactics to bring a huge portion of the U.S. labor movement under his absolute control.” The pact included discounted member dues and legal and financial assistance to aid the breakaway group’s efforts to take control of the Amalgamated Bank, the nation’s only union-owned bank. One union official called the power grab “a breathtaking form of imperialism…”

RULE 10: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.” Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog. (Unions used this tactic. Peaceful [albeit loud] demonstrations during the heyday of unions in the early to mid-20th Century incurred management’s wrath, often in the form of violence that eventually brought public sympathy to their side.)
SEIU thugs are trying to get people to turn violent. Be forceful in comments, but do not allow them to goad you into violence.

I think these people will find we are a bit more resistent than your average CEO. Get some.
Shocker. Union folks show up at a meeting and get physically violent with people who oppose their view. Who’d have imagined *that* would ever happen.

As far as tactics are concerned, for any tea-party or anti-obama protest group the following would seem obvious:
* Make certain there are plenty of video cameras among the protestors;
* Use the heavies in the movement (there are always some) as a flying shield against the aggressors. We’re not going to attack, but we’re not going to do some Ghandi number either.
* Do rehearsals for the inevitable attacks. This is vital, since we are new to this.
* Be prepared for worst, this includes, first aid and ambulance calls, not to mention lawyers for lawsuits.
* Think ahead — The enemy will attack with fists. When that doesn’t work, they will use clubs. After that, as they become increasingly desperate, I wouldn’t begin to speculate.
* No one will help us, least of all the Republican party. The authorities will always be late if they are available at all.
Remember: violence and terror is what the Obamistas lust for. It is their sacrament, the ultimate sanction of their being. It is not a means to a goal. It is their only goal.
I’d like to say that I’m shocked by this behavior from our elected representatives, but sadly I’m not. The ever increasing power being concentrated in DC breeds this thuggery; just ask our founding fathers.
Michelle I think you know that The One could end this anytime but he chose to ignite the flame instead. This will be his summer of discontent and he will and the Democrats will SUFFER so greatly at the hands of the American people for igniting this fire that I have every reason to believe that 2010 will be a bigger win for R’s then 1994.
There may be some union thugs bloodying up some of us at these townhalls but this country is damn well worth it!
Take video cameras and of course your cellphones and take more pictures then you will ever need because these union thug jackboots will be going to jail. They don’t get that the police are our neighbors not our enemies!

Sen Santorum advises us to allow them to talk, since they do not have facts with which to make their points. As a union member for all of my adult life,it saddens me to say that it is time to”Look for the Union Label”;then buy something else.
When the unions resort to thuggery,it is time to do everything short of physical violence to stop them.If that means breaking the unions by forcing business closings,so be it.

Conservatives better be able and willing to back up their beliefs, because the left is prepared to bring it to you. At one time in my career I have had to manage 30 Illinois teamsters. What took place in St Louis and Tampa is only a small snippet of violence by union thugs. Its only going to get worse unless authorities (like FBI) step in.

If you aren’t scared yet it might be time. Obama and his crew are apparently not afraid of 2010 or later. I’m still waiting to hear the Post Dispatch reporter’s side of the story. Gateway Pundit carried video of union members being allowed into this meeting through a handicap entrance. The “angry mobs” were kept outside. It’s 1939.
These are just more examples of how the liberal Democrats, in particular, the Obama machine use projection to accuse Republicans of doing exactly what it is they do.
They say in their ad that Repubs are using a playbook to orchestrate these Obamacare protests. The only playbook the Repubs might have is the one where an absent-minded Democrat left his playbook laying around for someone to read.
I received a letter from the Organizing for America group (not sure how I got on their mailing list). It reads:

The tactic SEIU and Obama team is using is divide and conquer. Do not get into a physical confrontation, this is exactly what team Obama wants, at that point they can call in the heavies (police, national guard, America Corps, New Black Panther Party, etc.) One can stand and resist without taking up arms. Yelling and shouting a speaker down at a town hall meeting may make one feel good, but it does not accomplish the objective of dismanteling a governmental dictate, honest objective discussion will.

Angry Mob of Racist Extremists Beats Black Man at Town Hall Meeting

I guess the Democrats were right after all. At a town meeting held by a Democrat congressman, a rowdy group of organized and angry thugs showed up to make a point about ObamaCare, and then beat up a man. Race was involved, too: the victim was black — attacked by a man yelling racial slurs.
It’s every Democrat talking point you’ve read about in the last day or two, come to life in an ugly fashion.
With one twist. The black victim was a conservative, and the assailants may well have been union thugs:
Kenneth Gladney, a 38-year-old conservative activist from St. Louis, said he was attacked by some of those arrested as he handed out yellow flags with “Don’t tread on me” printed on them. He spoke to the Post-Dispatch from the emergency room of the St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, where he said he was waiting to be treated for injuries to his knee, back, elbow, shoulder and face that he suffered in the attack. Gladney, who is black, said one of his attackers, also a black man, used a racial slur against him before the attack started.
“It just seems there’s no freedom of speech without being attacked,” he said.
Not when you have angry mobs of left-wing extremists around . . .
The only good thing about this is – now all of these Organizations that have been hiding in the dark are being exposed with a Search Light and people with even a small amount of sence are realizing just what is at stake.

The purpose of Directive 10-289 is to arrest the country’s economic decline by freezing the economy in its current state. The directive makes it illegal for workers to leave their current jobs and prevents businessmen from closing their doors. It forbids the introduction of inventions or new products, and it requires companies to produce an amount of annual goods identical to the amount produced the previous year. All wages, prices, profits, and dividends are frozen, and every individual is obligated to spend as much as he did in the previous year. The directive also sets up a Unification Board to hear all disagreements arising from the new laws. The Unification Board’s decisions on any issues that surface will be final.
I just find it fascinating and amazing that the democrat party is imploding after finally attaining their goal of complete control of both chambers and the presidency.
(I think it should be obvious to even a casual observe that the democrat party is desperate at this point, and is indeed on the brink of extinction…and it’s all happening right before our very eyes!)
I think the problem is that they gained control by pretending they were middle of the road or a bit right of center (in the case of the blue dogs) and when they one they convinced themselves that meant the country was really as radically liberal as they really are.
Then reality came knockin’ and meant business.
Dems were arrested in St. Louis – Just goes to show, you can’t take a democrat anywhere…
I doubt that I have the words to describe just how angry I am over this latest attempt to demonize the people who dare to disagree with the Won and his Chicago thugs.
I’ve written about 5 blogs in the last 24 hours to try to quell my anger – but it’s not going away.
Won and his Chicago thugs KNOW that the majority of Americans oppose government controlled health care. So what do they do? LIE! Try to convince Americans that protesters are manufactured, paid, special interest groups and kooks.
I guess it only goes to prove that Won believes totally in his ability to get people to blindly follow and ignore their lying eyes and ears.
The SEIU are criminals. Plain and simple. My recommendation is to carry large pull ties and if confronted by violent SIEU thugs, hog tie them, then move on. It’s for their own good.

Stop, take a momment and think about how that could be practically and logistically possible.
They can’t administer Cash for Clunkers. There are not enough people at all levels of govemnment to enforce Directive 10-289.
I have a recommendation on what we need to do with our “spare time.” The Democrats own the House and Senate, so in theory NONE of this protest could stop them from passing Healthcare.
The fight is not over Healthcare, but re-election survival. That’s their fear. We have to make sure public opinion stays on our side and MORE IMPORTANTLY it is not going to do us any good to make these Democrat politicians and RINO’s vulnerable and then have no qualified, articulate, representative candidates to challenge them in 2010.
My fear is we’ll get to the election with carboard cutouts as candidates. If you want to thwart Obama, then let’s start finding and promoting candidates to run in our districts.
Don’t focus on what they may do to us, focus on what we are going to do to them.

Conservatives need to draw the line with elected officials that are following the way of Obama – confront them is a “civil” manner, videotape these “town hall” events and let the “thug” throw the first punch. Go viral with the videos – the MSM will not put them out there for all to see, but people like Michelle will. Support those that are true representatives of conservative values in any manner possible – help them get elected to local, state and national office.
The line has been drawn in the sand – Obama and his minions do not want dissension, they want obedience from all. Our country was founded by men that made a stand for their freedom – even at the expense of “their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor”. We need to stand up again for those values that the Founding Fathers believed in, before it is too late.
We must have more video cameras at these events to document the atrocities and defend the innocent!
I don’t know about you guys but this will make it much easier to bring more friends with me at the next Tea Party.
Also, please note that the newspapers and local news outlets are reporting accurately that the violence is coming from the new Democratic party pushback. The union thugs and soon, ACORN. We are up to our ears in both here in LA.
By they way, which American city is second behind Detroit in manufacturing jobs lost? No, not Elkhart, Indiana. No, not Gary, Indiana. It’s Los Angeles where the unemployment rate is around 20% (depends on which city official you believe) and the goverment has not fired a single worker.

My girlfriend is a teacher in LAUSD and she assures me that most teachers are not part of this. They feel like they are being used and screwed by the pols and bureaucrats.
If I recall correctly, some sort of legislation was passed that gives Obama the power to shut down various networks if it is in the interest of “national security”.
Conservatives are coordinating primarily through blogs, and info is being dispersed through blogs and you tube videos. As this heats up, expect communications to be cut off.
Get cellphone numbers and e-mails of the people you trust. Get your own “network” going so that people can remain in touch and organized even without the internet.
Miss Cheryl, I went to lucianne.com and watched the video link and then read the article in the St Loius Post Dispatch. One of their reporters was picked up/one of the 6 arrested (for interference). (Lucianne Goldberg is Jonah Goldberg’s of Nat’l Review Fame, Mom.)

We’ve known for decades now that the Democrats’ true agenda is deeply unpopular with the vast majority of voters. When they didn’t have the Presidency and had only a slim (or no) majority in Congress they were good at concealing that agenda.
Having badly misinterpreted the 2008 election as an endorsement of their statist desires they didn’t just let the mask slip, they tore the mask off and threw it out the window. Now that normal people are getting a good look at what these parasites want they are all too predictably fighting back.

One of my cousins emailed me to alert me to a picture on foxnews showing another two of my cousins, (one of them a cancer survivor who’s still on chemo and spent his life savings for treatment but knows that such treatments won’t likley even exist under thug Obama’s plan), at the Tampa meeting and getting pushed around by union thugs.

BIG DITTO! Government worker unions are nothing but a form of shadow goverment. Government takes OUR tax money at the point of a gun, (try not paying and a gun will be pointed at you eventually…), and then the unions extort whatever they can get away with. We have ZERO elected representation about that.

I disagree groundhunter. I think Obama should step things up, push to hard, go to far. The end result will be the total annihilation of him and his party, many of whom will swing from lamp posts as they deserve.
These people are bent on the destruction of America at any cost, and if merely turned around, and forced to stand down now, they will simply re-organize and come back again. Their minds cannot be changed, they cannot be reasoned with.
