A doctor takes issue with the Washington Post

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 10, 2009 03:30 PM

Reader Christy e-mails:

Michelle,

I am a pediatrician in Southern Indiana in Rep. Baron Hill’s district. I was actually contacted by the WaPo to give my thoughts on this situation. I was asked by a friend to do this and needless to say, I was quite nervous about what the liberal journalist from the WaPo would take away from our conversation. I spent an hour talking to him with my husband alongside of me and sounded calm and well-educated on the matter. I tried to discuss my concerns not because I am a conservative, but because I am a physician. I couldn’t believe that these are the quotes which ended up in the paper. The first wasn’t even close to what I said. I never referred to Rep. Hill by his first name and the “effigy” comment was not even close to what I was talking about. I mentioned how I “wouldn’t hang him in effigy” (since that is the left’s favorite thing to do, ie, Sarah Palin, Bush), meaning that I have concerns, but am willing to voice them in a productive way. He also asked me about how I’ve been trying to get people involved and I mentioned that I have posted things on FB to encourage my friends to contact his office. He came into my home with his agenda, a very liberal agenda, and I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I thought that he would present both sides equally and fairly, and instead twisted my words and did not even put the important things in that I had emphasized. I always believed that the left had their agenda and always knew that they would warp our views to better fit how they want the world to see us. Now, my beliefs have been validated. I’m sick over this. Here is the link to the article.

Keep fighting the good fight!

Christy Lane

Christy, thanks for trying to get the message out. Please don’t give up!

The Courier-Journal, the daily “rag” that serves Rep. Hill’s district, published a self-congratulatory piece last week on how they might be liberal on the op-ed pages, but they were absolutely unbiased when reporting news.

Many readers promptly took them to task pointing out that unbiased reporting includes reporting both sides of a story, story placement (such as unflattering stories about liberals buried deep inside the paper while unflattering stories about conservatives are Page 1) and altoghether omitting news stories that don’t fit the agenda they promote.

If they protest, then your pretty much sure they have their own agenda in mind.

Perhaps she’s upset because the article wasn’t about her?

If anyone of them ever bothered to check history of corrupt governments in quest of total power, they would see that it won’t be long before all their “stories and reports” will be submitted to a government censor (probably a czar’s office) for approval before hitting the printer or TV screen. It never fails that the press is eventually totally controlled, more than enough to make CNN howl. I wonder if they think things will be different this time. I doubt it; the press are useful idiots. If I was an editor or reporter, I would be watching my back.

It’s in her letter to Michelle:

    1) She never referred to the representative by his first name.
    2) The effigy quote was incorrect.
    3) The reporter misrepresented the context of her Facebook comment.

The reporter disregarded the points she felt were most relevant to her point of view and cherry picked and distorted comments to set up softball questions for the representative. It was clear to Dr. Lane that the reporter was not objective and clearly had an agenda.

Ultimately, at the point in which he put quotations around what she said, he should have done so accurately. It’s irritating to be misquoted even in the most innocent of circumstances (which this was not).

Absolutely correct – and call the bastards on it when misquoted. As Rags said – video recording is even better, and if the interviewer objects show him/her the door (and try to get the objection on tape as well.

The police are required to video record every interrogation and/or interview to allay fears of intimidation of improper questioning – why should a “reporter” not be subject to the same thing to avoid misquotes and unfair reporting?

Lefties have taken to recording everything. We need to do the same.

Unfortunately, I have found that speaking with the media is an art form and that is why politicians and others frequently interviewed sound like robots repeating talking points. Words will almost always be taken out of context to “fit” the theme of the article. When the article is written by someone of opposing viewpoint, the theme is always unsympathetic to the person quoted.

While I agree with Dr. Lane’s complaint, I have to say that talking to ANY MSM reporter without fully understanding your words will be twisted and parsed to support the reporter’s point of view, is more than a little naive.

There haven’t been many, if any, honest and trustworthy reporters in a mainstream news program in my memory.

If called upon to talk to the press, aired or print, record it yourself, make sure the reporter knows you are doing so and be prepared to defend yourself when your words are twisted.

In the early 80′s I spent some time with the Air Force’s Director of Public Affairs (a one-star). When he was asked what his most egregious example of media flim-flammery was, he related how Mike Wallace and 60 Minutes came in to interview an Air Force general. As the crew set up their cameras, the Air Force sent in a film crew and began setting up alongside the 60 Minutes gang. Wallace asked what they were doing and when told, “We are going to tape the interview, so we have the same story…” Wallace and crew packed up and left immediately!

A long-time friend (a 4-star) was interviewed on some controversial issue of the time. When the piece was printed, it quoted him incorrectly — leading to a call from his boss (the SecDef). He was fortunate to have taped the interview, which got him out of hot water.

Typical media, if we can’t make things come out the way we want we had better work on the “story” (e.g., pick-up trucks blow up, so we better make them do just that, even if we have to rig the whole thing).

Dr. Lane, the most important concern is your patients. I would make sure that everyone in your office knew what happened at that interview and how your words were twisted. That way if a patient says something about the interview everyone knows the truth.

I would also write the paper and tell what you had said and how the writer twisted your words.
