Snarking at conservative books
Before Culture of Corruption hit #1 on the NYTimes best-seller list and other lists this week, my friend Mark Levin’s Liberty and Tyranny held the top spot for 12 weeks and has never ranked lower than #3 over the past 19 weeks. A truly amazing phenomenon. CNS reports:
While President Barack Obama and Congress have been pushing ahead with an agenda that would dramatically increase the size and scope of the federal government, a book advocating strictly limited government has been riding at the top of the nonfiction bestseller lists.
Over the past 19 weeks, Mark Levin’s “Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto” has never ranked lower than No. 3 on The New York Times best seller list—and it ranked No. 3 for only one of those weeks. The book has been No. 1 on the list for 12 weeks, and No. 2 for six.
It has already sold 900,000 copies, according to publisher Simon & Schuster, and there are 1,185,000 in print. If the New York Times bestseller list is the standard, “Liberty and Tyranny” is indisputably the hottest non-fiction book published in 2009.
The book is also currently the top nonfiction best seller as measured by the Nielson Book Scan list for the month.
“Liberty and Tyranny’s” tremendous sales have come despite the fact that the establishment media has ignored it.
“Mark never went on NBC. He’s never been asked. He never went on ABC. He’s never been asked. He’s never been asked to be on CBS,” conservative talk show host Sean Hannity told CNSNews.com.
“As far as I know,” said Hannity, “he’s never been asked to be on the other two liberal cable networks. To have these kinds of sales numbers and to be totally and utterly and completely ignored by the mainstream media–I mean it was, what, 13 weeks on the New York Times best seller list before the Philly Inquirer did a piece on it.”
Instead of recognizing the tectonic shift in the political landscape, some book editors are happy to snark and deride. The Washington Post Book World section acknowledges the dominance of right-leaning books on the best-seller list in a blog post today, but refuses to lower itself to review the books on their own merits.
Meh.
Success is the best revenge.

WaPo’s Steven Levingston e-mails: “I posted these reviews as a way to allow others views to have a voice on the blog. If conservative commentators speaking on conservative books counts as snarking, then I guess it’s snarking. I did not intend it that way. I believe all voices should be heard and that is what I have done with this posting.”

Wait until you go on a book signing tour!(Vroman’s in Pasadena is on most top book signing tour itineraries …hint…hint)
Yes, but neither Mark nor you, Michelle, want to be reviewed by the WP or the New York Times. It would be a hatchet job. Besides, you’re proving you don’t need them.
Congrats Michelle! And check out your Amazon comments on Boortz!

WTH is this Voices of the Right gimmick? I guess WaPo represents Voices of the Left.
I left a comment at the WaPo site asking why they wouldn’t review the book.
I stopped reading newspapers when I realized its only useful purpose was the publication of comic strips.
As verogolfer said, who needs em?
I was in Portland, OR, over the weekend and went to Powell’s Books, and their display of “best selling nonfiction” did not have Culture of Corruption or Liberty and Tyranny.
A**hats. I disliked Portland, btw. Too many self righteous greenies. Ugh.
I hope the fact that conservative books are selling like hotcake is because conservatives know how to read. Liberals: not so much.
Anyway, I would rather have the people reading these books on their merit than the WaPo of NYTimes regurgitating the bookis as they see fit.
Congratulations again, Michelle, to both you and Mark Levin.
People don’t just vote on election day, they also vote with their own hard-earned money.
These book sales show that the USA is still a center-right nation, and “We the People” do not want Socialist/Communist “CHANGE”.
I’m a books on tape listener, and was very pleased to see culture of corruption on my libraries web site. i put it on hold, as of course it’s backordered. look forward to listening to it. thanks for putting it on tape, as my eyes are less than capable these days.
When are we going to stop saying “right-leaning Americans” and just admit the obvious. What is labeled “right-wing”, when broken down by a list of very specific issues, represents what most Americans support. We ARE main stream America. What’s the alternative? Squishy Republicanism? Smoke and mirrors liberalism?
We are the only ones who are being truthful about what we stand for and we boldly speak in specifics. You don’t need to hire paid agitators with global communists affiliations to show up to our gatherings. We outnumber everyone.
btw, the reason conservative books sell, and liberal books fail is simple to explain. conservatives read, and are involved in their news. liberals watch dancing with the stars and american idol. pop culture at the checkout stand (people) are the news sources of the left. if not, explain why jon stewart is the lefts primary news source.
This is where the phrase, “There is no such thing as bad publicity” comes in. Yes, it’s likely that MM and MLevin would get the look-down-our-noses treatment from both of those rags, but if it gets the word out that these books exist, that’s good enough. And if these papers do a hatchet job, that’s a BADGE OF HONOR, right?
Just another example of why the MSM are less and less relevant. Their snarky little blog will draw a few snarky comments, including mine, but it’s not selling any papers, unlike your book.
I just posted this on the WaPo blog (unabashedly quoting oneself):
Now reporting self to “fishy” web site….oops that was for a twitter post.
Dispite no MSM review, I am anxiously waiting for my delivery of Mark’s and your book from Amazon!!!
Part of the “angry mob” and proud of it! Cathy B in AZ
He says that as if conservatives are some alien race of beings.
Your smug sense of superiority is showing in your choice of words, Mr. Levingston.
and the last time I checked my local military exchange…none of the books were on the shelf…but dear leader’s books (even the spanish version) was prominently displayed….hmmmm
Borrowing from ‘The Blues Brothers’:
“We have both points of view-Liberal AND Leftist.”
That’s understandable. The military has to go with the current administration. Being an Army brat, I knew that the PX wouldn’t have everything I wanted.
Michelle,
Please don’t use the word “snark”. It reminds me of a certain disgusting someone who fouls this blog with his babbling blather.
The movies that make the most money are not necessarily the best movies. They don’t get the best reviews. They are not the most remembered.
Speak of the devil……….
When did this blog change into the Entertainment Tonight blog?
In the eyes of the movie critic, they are not the “best movies”. If they are making the most money, then the people going to see them have a different opinion.
Look at Star Wars. It’s a legend, but I don’t ever remember it winning a “best picture” award.
I usually ignore lgm, going by his posts. But, I wonder…does this person come on strictly to aggravate or does he live completely in a fantasy world?

I haven’t had cable or statelite tv for 10 years. I haven’t read a newspaper in 5 years. yet, I am well-informed through the internet.
The main stream media can have a long and sufferable death for all I care.
True, lgm. John Wayne’s movies are the most remembered.
Hello, everyone. I need a small bit of help, and this may prove to be fun for you as well. Check out the Wiki page on fallacies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies
Now, can anyone help me: Which fallacy is lgm engaging in today? Feel free to save the link for future reference.
No LGM lives in his grandma’s basement.
BTW, Michelle…as someone here astutely puts it, “If you’re not catching flak, then you’re not over the target.”
You and Mark keep up the good fight!
Notice the left always claims to want all voices heard yet never allow them to be?
Now that I have Michelles book I will wait for lgm’s new book.”How To S**T and Fall Back In It.”
JammieWearingFool–and that’s just the voices in their heads!
I recently published a conservative book entitled “Ideological Bigotry.” It has not made the Jayson Blair Times best seller list, but it has gotten me radio interviews, and a couple nights ago a speech at the Reagan Library.
I would consider it an honor and a privilege to be hated as much as Michelle Malkin and Mark Levin, and for the same reasons.
As for the Great One, I was also at Hannity’s Freedom Concert in San Diego. There were no angry mobs, and the only thing people yelled at soldiers were “Thank you” and “We love you.” Mark Levin was there, and he was on fire.
Keep fighting the good fight Ms. Malkin. Ideological Bigotry will be defeated with your help.
Respectfully,

lgm: NOW it makes sense.
It is time for Conservative celebrities and start running for office. If Franken can win in MN, why not conservatives. Rush should run in Missouri (the Limbaugh name is big there), Beck in Utah. Laura Bush should move to a state where she would have a chance and run as well. If he is old enough,Rick Perry should appoint George P. Bush (Jeb’s son) to the Senate if Kay Bailey Hutchinson resigns. I could see all the attacks, and we could just scream “Racists”. I am tired of the Right operating on Marquis de Queensbury rules while the Left operates on Marquis de Sade rules.
“Sandboxing” is a practice in computing of using specialized software to run an operating system in such a way that it is completely isolated from everything else on the computer. That’s essentially what the WaPo is doing. They’re taking the “ew-gross-icky” conservative authors and critics and running them in a special section where their readers won’t get any horrifying conservative cooties on them. Now they can say they “covered” the phenomena without having to wade in and actually sully themselves with the topic.
Admits that Conservatives qualify as “other voices” while not even trying to refute:
And they wonder why newspaper subscriptions keep falling.
If Pelosi used a different colored crayon, she would sell more books.
A tectonic shift? In 2003, Michael Savage, Bill O’Reilly, Michael Moore and Al Franken all had #1 bestsellers on the N.Y. Times list. In ’04, Sean Hannity and Richard Clarke had #1 bestsellers a month apart. In ’05, Neal Boortz and Al Franken (again). In 2006, there was Ann Coulter’s “Godless,” “Fiasco” by Thomas Ricks, the last and harshest of Woodward’s book on the Bush White House, and “The Audacity of Hope.” And a year after “Godless,” Christopher Hitchens’ “God is not Great” was #1.
Gee, one day you’re telling us about art fetching the highest price, and today you’re telling us that the best isn’t about price/sales.
Make up your mind, lgm.
And a couple of those weeks it wasn’t number one, it actually sold more books than the number one book.
