Hey, Rep. Betsy Markey: You’re invited to a town hall meeting you refuse to hold! Updated

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 13, 2009 03:49 PM

Reader Kelly e-mails that Colorado Democrat Rep. Betsy Markey is hiding from her constituents and refusing to hold a public forum during this long, hot congressional recess.

So Kelly has graciously taken the opportunity to convene a town hall for Rep. Markey — and extended an open invitation. If the congresswoman doesn’t show, her voters will have a placeholder ready:

Hi Michelle,

Thought you’d get a kick out of this grass-roots movement we have going on here in Northern Colorado. This all started with a rant I made to a few of my buddies in an email, complaining that our rep, Congresswoman Markey, is nowhere to be found! Here we are 2 weeks into a 5 week recess, other reps are having 2-3 townhalls to meet demand while this crazy health care debate is raging, and Markey has only issued a vague statement about “small public gathers, schedule to be release probably next week!”

That’s unacceptable, and we’re doing something about it! I mentioned in my rant that we should hold our own town hall and put a big empty chair up there on stage where our elected Rep. should be!

Well, one thing led to another and here we go. We’ll video the entire affair and hand deliver it to her office along with petitions and letters that anyone who turns out is free to give to us.

I’d rather be fishing with my boys, but I’ve reached a tipping point this year and I’m not going to be silent anymore!

Wish us luck!!!!

Regards,
Kelly Trosper

Press Release
Citizens Invite US Rep to Her Own Town Hall Meeting

FORT COLLINS, COLORADO, A community town hall meeting will be held Aug 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Council Tree Library in Fort Collins. The only thing missing from this meeting might be Northern Colorado’s US Representative, Betsy Markey (D-CO).

After numerous unsuccessful requests to receive Markey’s town hall meeting schedule Kelly Trosper, a Fort Collins resident, and several of his frustrated friends, have taken the unusual step of scheduling a town hall meeting on behalf of Markey — and inviting her to speak.

“With the August recess nearly half way over, we can’t wait any longer. When other Reps across the nation are adding extra meetings, we still don’t have a schedule from her. This is a forum to discuss urgent topics, to include Health Care reform. We’re having to set one up ourselves, because our Rep isn’t making herself available,” says Trosper, who hopes she will attend.

In case Markey doesn’t attend, the group will have a video of the proceedings delivered to her along with letters that come via email to nocotownhall@gmail.com.

Trosper and his friends are calling their grassroots effort the Northern Colorado Townhall Committee, and have set up a Web site for other community members awaiting information, www.nocotownhall.com.

Trosper says the Northern Colorado Townhall Committee’s objective is to provide a forum for community members to discuss what is important to taxpayers in Northern Colorado.

“If she won’t put together a town hall for us, the folks of Northern Colorado who elected her to represent our views to D.C., we’ll put one together for her.”

***

Well, lookee here: A new town hall schedule for Rep. Markey.

Some folks here in Vegas are doing the same thing. Neither of our Senators (Reid and Ensign – one whacky Dem and a Repbulican who can’t keep it in his pants) nor the two Reps (Berkley and Titus – both Dems) are having town meetings (although Harry did have a Green summit here with Bill Clinton and Manbearpig). So a local radio talkshow hostess named Heidi Harris is having one for them and filming it so they can give it to our employees to review at their leisure.

Oops, I didn’t mean to click the “submit” button just yet. Wanted to add that I hope to see this kind of initiative among voters all over the country. Politicians who won’t be confronted by their constituents are cowards.

My wife and I are going to a Town Hall meeting this evening with our Rep Mary Fallin (Oklahoma). She will not vote for the health care reform package, but we need to show her our support just the same. And to counter any counter protests, if any. Will report back if any contentions arise.

These reps have grown so used to not listening to the American people it has become common place. Many use townhalls as their final sounding board and when these reps get criticism, they just ignore it and continue along their merry way.

This rep should be ashamed of herself. But she won’t. Because these politicians as well as the White House have no shame. This is THEIR country now and we SERVE them and our concerns for the future be damned.

No, wait, forget that. If the web site looks too slick, everyone will know you are just a front for evil insurance company execs.
No, wait, the MSM and libs are onto our hand painted protest signs and fake anger and modest web sites. They have found out it’s all orchestrated and produced by Dick Cheney at a secret site up in Cheyenne.

Seriously though, a great idea for a town hall, Ft. Collins. Give a warm welcome to my niece entering vet school at Colorado St. in the fall.

A friend of mine in Ohio called Senator Sherrod Brown’s office a while ago to ask (politely) if he’d be having a townhall. She said the lady she spoke to was very rude to her and said she wasn’t able to give out his schedule. My friend later called his DC office and someone there told her that they didn’t have a date for a townhall. Then today my friend tells me that lo and behold, Senator Brown had a townhall but the announcement for it showed up on his website the day of the event, and she never saw it published anywhere (although she might have missed it). She was pretty mad. They’re laying (or is that lying?) as low as they can I guess to avoid us.

Also, here in NH our Senator Sheehan (D) had a telephone conference townhall from DC. Over 15,000 were on the call and 500 were holding to ask a question. She spoke for a little over an hour, although kept leaving to take a vote on the cash for clunkers so had an Obama spokesperson helping her out. 15,000+ people — And this is NH. Our biggest city only has 100,000 people in it!

How about an actor to portray the rep? The actor can nod her head and say next question without answering like Arlen Spector, can say I just don’t get it like Claire Mccaskill, can talk on the cell phone like Sheila Racist Lee, and can tell everyone to stop telling lies like Barack Obama. (that’s Obama telling people to stop telling lies, not Obama telling lies).

Then at the end the actor can thank everyone, tell them how important it is to hear them out and let them vent and then tell them they are all wrong and she will vote yes on the health care bill because she is smarter than all the people who showed up with handmade signs made by Dick Cheney. That would be good realistic acting.

In other good news. Brian Baird (WA ST 3rd CD) has apologized for his comparing Americans who are voicing their opinions on health care to Nazi Brown Shirts and Timothy McVeigh and is planning on holding town hall meetings after all(and actually giving decent notice):

in response to some of the things we’ve been seeing across the nation I have said some things myself that I regret. I want to express that regret directly and announce that we will be holding a series of five town halls so people can express their opinions and ask questions.

I believe that this is in direct response to many of his constiuents (on all sides of the political spectrum) letting him know that his cancelling of town halls is unacceptable (he usually has multiple town hall meetings every recess).
