Congressional Fugitive Watch: Has your lawmaker absconded today?

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 17, 2009 02:01 AM

At Hot Air, Ed Morrissey has compiled a very handy list of congressional representatives who have refused to show up for town hall meetings.

Ed jokingly calls them Milk Carton Politicians.

But the missing kids on milk cartons are mostly kidnap victims — abducted and missing against their will.

The lawmakers on the run from voters during this August recess are deliberate runaways from accountability. They are intentional absconders from public scrutiny.

The congressional cowards belong on Fugitive Watch posters. Keep on them.

***

Last week, I noted the new phenomenon of empty chair town hall meetings convened by voters who can’t get their representatives to meet with them.

Reader Mary Kay Mason e-mails an exchange she had with the staff of Democrat U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina back in May:

Dear Mary Kay,

I understand that everyone would love to have some time with their Senator, so we will keep your request on file and continue to review it each week, with the backlog of requests that we are still working through.

Perhaps you would like to stop by one of her Carolina Coffees each Wednesday morning in DC or drop by one of her regional offices as we get those open.

Again, I will be back in touch as soon as possible. Thanks for your continued patience.

Sincerely,

US Senator Kay Hagan D-NC

On Saturday, 200 constituents turned out for a mock town hall meeting on health care with Sen. Hagan in abstentia.

Via the Star News Online in NC:

She couldn’t come, but they pretended she was there, saying her absence wouldn’t silence their opinions about health care reform.

So, at Saturday’s “mock” town hall meeting, leaders of the local Constitutional Patriots hung an enlarged photo of Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., and announced plans to send a video of all speakers’ questions and comments to her office.

Almost everyone who spoke to the crowd of more than 150 people seated at New Hanover County Northeast Library – and to Hagan’s photo – was opposed to the health care reform legislation lawmakers are considering.

…The crowd that gathered was a mix of ages, though most of the speakers were seniors who spoke of their worries of receiving adequate health care when they were sick.

And via the Raleigh News Observer:

A statewide public opinion poll released this week suggests that the health-care overhaul no longer has majority support in North Carolina.

A lot of that going around. They can run, but they can’t hide.

Virginia found one of its senators. He was in Burma (about as far away as you can get), giving himself a “pat on the back” for rescuing some American in jail. I guess he was trying to emulate Clinton. With all that is going on, this summer, this senator is out of country. It’s another proof that politicians are more interested in their reelections and position, than helping the people who elected them.

I for one, do not consider the Junior Senator from VA one of my Senators. Have not forgotten how rude he was to the former Presidnet, and that his campaign, like that of the Congressman who was elected (not by me) to represent this Congressional district in Va, was simply a ‘I hate Bush’ campaign.

Good to see the absconded Gabrielle Giffords (AZ)on the short end of a recall petition, not that it’ll go anywhere. Hope she’s looking for work next fall; we’ll see if even the vermin liberals from Tucson can help her overcome her steadily decreasing popularity.

Drudge linked a story in the “Merced County Times”, a link that the paper apparently immediately took down.

    From their ‘front page’:

Won’t you come home Dennis Cardoza? Why won’t you come home? They cried the whole night long.”
    Aug 13, 2009

Normally this is the one time of the year that we can expect to hear from our Congressman. Traditionally there are Town Hall meetings to give the constituents a one on one with their Congress in discussion of the various topics being debated on Capitol Hill.

Our Congressman Dennis Cardoza says there will be no Town Hall meetings. He is not expected to return to Merced County over the summer recess.

Following that is a “Read More…” linked to the SAME page that Drudge posted but it’s “404″…

Ike has been like that forever. The only reason he keeps getting voted in is because of his tenure and his position on the House Armed Services Committee (I think that’s the one). Whiteman AFB is in his district, and people are just oh-so-scared that if good ol’ Ike ain’t re-elected that Whiteman will go bye-bye.

He’s also been a solid 2nd Amendment vote over the years.

What people fail to realize is that Whiteman would be just as safe with somebody else in there, and that finding a solid 2nd Amendment candidate in Missouri is as easy as falling off a wagon.

I wish the people in our congressional district would wake up, look at Ike’s record as a whole, and realize he’s no better than any other lib donkey congresscritter and give him the heave-ho.
