Cone of Shame Award: MSNB-see-only-what-we-want-you-to-see

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 20, 2009 04:45 PM

Oh, you are just going to love MSNBC’s explanation for why the network doctored up video of a black town hall protester carrying a gun to suggest that gun-toting Tea Party folks are all white racists.

This takes the cake.

I don’t think there is a Cone of Shame big enough:

It was a water tainter, meant to mislead viewers into assuming all Tea Party participants are violent racists. They knew the entire footage was out there; they didn’t care. All they wanted was a chance to further prejudice viewers’ minds against the Tea Party movement.

And you know what a better, easier way to do this is? Show guys 1 through 11, the ones who were white, and simply exclude the unnecessary cropped picture. Abracadabra. Problem solved. And you saved yourself all that unnecessary cropping time and anxiety over being caught.

But not as effective at portraying Tea Partiers as potentially violent, wholly unreasonable as the out of context clip of a weapon.

You’re giving Contessa the benefit of the doubt

Only in that I believe she genuinely assumed the guy was white. Not in her argument or assumptions.

Her assumption was racist. Perhaps we should start screaming “profiling!” and “racism!” like Skippy Gates…

    Chapoutier,
This reminds me of your argument yesterday that mentioning similarities between Hitler and Obama were done (in the case of Rush) gratuitously to evoke a visceral reaction in viewers. Trying to gin up a negative response against your opponent by association with a hated figure.

Sounds like some folks are making that same argument here against MSNBC only this time, you are on the “I can see how this wasn’t what you think” side of the argument.

In both cases, someone is using the power of suggestion to say more than the actual details alone would convey. So now the Town Hall Protesters are being “slimed,” it seems.

Regardless, these scenarios don’t match their explanation.
And your explanation defies common sense. That would be purposely concocting a lie that is 1) totally unnecessary and 2) obviously going to be exposed.

But isn’t it the nature of lies, that the perpetrators always think that they won’t get caught?

    Zackly.

It’s not as if there is a history of the MSM fabricating lies, doctoring documents, etc. to one-up the opposition. They don’t play by the rules. They take a by any means necessary approach and we’re to believe that this was just some innocent mishap?

    Riiiiiiight.

That’s what I’m saying, brother. The “that’s too dumb for them to contemplate” argument holds no water for me given the antics of the MSM from Rathergate, Eason Jordan and the “They’re killing the journalists!” and on and on.

But even that still doesn’t mean that there was collusion between the film editor and Contessa to purposely hide the race of the gentleman so that Contessa would be able to purposely lie about it

Give me a break, I saw the footage before I learned that the guy was black and I was curious as to why the head or the hands were not shown. When I found out, I was not shocked that MSNBC did this. That was a blatant, our viewers are stupid enough to fall for anything we report. Having read your posts long enough Chap, I am not shocked that you fall for it.
