The bottom line on Tom Ridge: Weasel
What a weasel.
Former Bush DHS head Tom Ridge is hyping his upcoming tell-all book, which claims that the Bush administration pressured him for political reasons to raise threat level assessments.
But not a single official will back him up…including himself!
The money paragraphs in the New York Times today on Ridge’s allegations:
Tom Ridge, the first secretary of homeland security, asserts in a new book that he was pressured by top advisers to President George W. Bush to raise the national threat level just before the 2004 election in what he suspected was an effort to influence the vote.
…The most sensational assertion was the pre-election debate in 2004 about the threat level, first reported by U.S. News & World Report. Mr. Ridge writes that the bin Laden tape alone did not justify a change in the nation’s security posture but describes “a vigorous, some might say dramatic, discussion” on Oct. 30 to do so.
“There was absolutely no support for that position within our department. None,” he writes. “I wondered, ‘Is this about security or politics?’ Post-election analysis demonstrated a significant increase in the president’s approval rating in the days after the raising of the threat level.”
Mr. Ridge provides no evidence that politics motivated the discussion. Until now, he has denied politics played a role in threat levels. Asked by Eric Lichtblau of The New York Times if politics ever influenced decisions on threat warnings, he volunteered to take a lie-detector test. “Wire me up,” Mr. Ridge said, according to Mr. Lichtblau’s book, “Bush’s Law.” “Not a chance. Politics played no part.”
Let me repeat the bottom line:
He “suspected.”
He “wondered.”
But:
Mr. Ridge provides no evidence that politics motivated the discussion.
Just to be clear:
Mr. Ridge provides no evidence that politics motivated the discussion.
So, either he lied to Lichtblau. Or he’s deliberately fudging now to create book hype and interest among Bush-hating liberal journalists.
Who’s politicizing national security, Mr. Ridge?

Anything to make a buck. Sell your soul to be popular with the very people who hate you. Sad, very sad
As Tom Ridge is a family friend, I should recuse myself from commenting, but I won’t. Book hype, nothing more, nothing less.
May your words forever stand to show others how moderate RINO’s show their appreciation.
May your words forever show your lack of integrity, honesty and loyalty.
True or not. You lied then or you are lying now.
Who defends a known liar?
Dear Tom,
How about some names, so they can respond. I sure as hell won’t buy
your book good luck with libtard sales. Two words Tommy – DIXIE CHICKS.
Of all the great men to have come from PA, you sir are not one of them.
Tom Ridge = Collin Powell light.
Heh! Washington DC speak.
I hope the book is stocked in the fiction section where it belongs.
If Bush/Cheney wanted to have direct “without question” control of the DHS, they would have created the agency as a czar-run operation instead of something controlled by official cabinet position — which is what Obama’s doing almost every day.
But at least Ridge and his publisher were smart enough to know that, without a little red meat to entice the derangement syndrome crowd, his book would be as popular as a 90-year-old nun in a singles bar. Now, thanks to juicy tidbits like this, it’ll be as popular as an 89-year-old nun in a singles bar.
By the way, great column today Michelle. Corporate Shills for Hope and Change. The next edition of your book, Culture of Corruption, will be a thousand pages with these “updates” added!
Tom who? We have some we-weeding in our ranks still left to do.
You know what? At some point you have to question the man/team that put these kind of people in positions of authority.
Bush left political enemies in positions of power that could do real damage. He didn’t clean out foggy bottom. He didn’t clear out the CIA. And he didn’t fire the us attorneys when he took office, like every other president does, and they all came back to haunt him.
Knuckleheads like Ridge are the product of Bush assuming everybody was on his team because they always had the best interests of the country in mind.
Bush and his team had a political tin ear and their lack of political leadership greatly contributed to the massive losses in 06 and 08.
Call me crazy, but wouldn’t our elections make a great target for the Islamo-facists? I mean wouldn’t they just love to send a few people wearing bomb vests into polling places to try and raise some chaos? Raising the alert level for the election would seem to make sense.
How long till Ridge’s book hits the Bargain Table at Border’s?I give it 6 months.
The Slimes gave a mention to a “conservative’s” book?! Egad!
Aha…a slam on GWB. Written based on polls, no doubt.
Ditto #4; this tripe by Ridge will stand no chance of topping Michelle or Levin at any point in its trajectory. (Anybody know how well O’Neill and McClellan’s pathetic books did?)
zorro: I doubt an update will suffice. Probably a sequel each year as long as this creepy guy’s in office.
BTW, has anyone else noticed how rarely he even bothers to smile these days, except when he’s being blatantly snide?
On August 21st, 2009 at 7:18 am, Rob Roy said:
Yes indeed; that was one of his hugest faults. He didn’t flush the turds as they should’ve been. Whether or not he would’ve but for 9-11, we’ll obviously never know. PRIORITIES.
Once again, Michelle gets to the facts.
Smearing the Bush White House with false allegations about politicizing national security is an acceptable book promotion?
Proud Vet:
I clearly remember having this conversation with a coworker in 2001. We couldn’t believe he would be so naive.
And, thanks for your service to our country!
Scott McClellan thinks Tom Ridge is a weasel.
Sorry, haven’t posted too much lately. BabiesGrandpa is in the hospital unexpectedly – is better, should be released today.
Anyway, IF GWB extremely disliked what Tom “The Turncoat” Ridge was arguing about, I suspect he would have replaced him then. As it turns out, GWB was very generous with his loyalty, to a fault.
I thought Turncoat Ridge was a little too slick (as in RINO) while he had his job. This just confirms it.
Conservative books are dominating the best seller list so Ridge decided to hype his book to liberals.
Idiot!
Obama:(taking a few tokes) “I’d so hit that. (cough)”
This thread was custom made for lgm. A perfect opportunity to bash Bush.
C’mon, lgm, swoop on by.
The weasel will get his 15 minutes of liberal love in the media and then be tossed aside as trash. I hope it was worth it to him.
If this doofus had any integrity, he would have resigned in lieu of raising the threat level. He is a lying p.o.s.
He is a dumb weasel at that.
He does not see that all of the best sellers are not being bought by the “blame Bush” crowd?
If it helped keep Al (the Hoax) Gore out of the White I say… Brilliant!
Levels should always be higher during an election, duh. Even if it means we have to protect Odopeys dumb a$$.
*White House.
Pelosi,Boxer and Ridge can fight for top spot .
Ahh, there you have it. Pushing a book? Didn’t all the other weasels from W’s administration do the same thing?
scott mcclellan
tom ridge
sad sad people
More dry rot… feed him to the wood chipper…
Who would’ve thought? Ridge was a weasel all along …
Just when we’re finally slowing down the Obama-Reid-Pelosi liberal fascist juggernaut, along comes a RINO to allow the Treason Media to shift the spotlight back to their preferred bete noir, Dubya. (It’s not as if the woeful, inarticulate, turn-other-cheek ex-Prez will step up and defend himself, the schmuck.)
Enjoy your 30 pieces of silver, Tommy boy.
The self-gratifying, fame-seeking, cash hungry list of popular wannabe’s continues to grow.
Can’t…he’s stuck in the p-trap.
With all the political capital and donations the DNC has stashed, I would not be surprised if it was found that they troll for ship jumpers just to bash anything Republican. Liberal books never do sell well, so there has to be ‘other’ incentives.
Something tells me that if the threat level WASN’T raised and the country was attacked then there would be claims that the Bush administration stupidly pressured Ridge NOT to raise the threat level despite OBL’s new promise to attack!
People like Ridge running Homeland Security is why sane Americans have armed themselves to the teeth.
Shut down Homeland Security, divide their funding up between the Border Patrol and the FBI, then go have a nice day. Problem solved.
Tom Ridge wrote a book….
….. and the world collectively yawned.
Ridge may be going the McCain Route of trying to kiss up and bow down to the Liberal Press, hoping they will vault him to the top of their GOP wish list.
I remember Ridge’s time as PA governor. Yes, he was a lying weasel! While campaigning, he came into my area and promised that a long-unfinished road project would finally be completed. Eventually, it was – AFTER he rammed another gas tax increase down our throats! This guy is a RINO of the first degree and I wouldn’t elect him dog catcher.
Hey Tom, to quote my favorite line from my favorite Kurt Russell movie, “Backdraft”:
Ridge is all “wee-wee’d up,” man.
this is what bush gets for catering to the rino east coast ivy league smart set. politicians one and all, no principles which can’t be bought, no ideology which can’t be coerced by the press adoration of the go along to get along set.
Does anyone think the whole “threat level” is of any practical use at all?
Cue Capt. Louis Renault…
I’m shocked, SHOCKED to find Tom Ridge fudging the record to curry favor with the presstitutes.
Bold prediction – Ridge’s book will never pass “Culture of Corruption” on the sales charts.
OK. I don’t like tom Ridge either. I agree that he is a weasel. I must also tell you that the terror threat levels were always a waste of time. First, the level never went below elevated. Secondly, whenever they were elevated nothing happened, so they were not a good indicator of anything.
Tom who? This guy sat on his but while the nation was overrun with illegal aliens. He now is concerned about some colored tiles on an imaginary “threat index” that frankly makes no sense in the first place. And he thinks that is going to sell books?
Scott McClellan, meet Mr. Tom…
What a putz!
Ridge is a fudger.
Oh goody, another ‘er word:
birther
deather
mobster
fudger
Lets see how many days in a row MSNBC uses this story .Over /Under 45
So if I understand this right, assuming what he says is true: so long as he stands to lose something, regardless to the threat to the Constitution or American public, he will do and say nothing? Only after he’s out of the job, out of a position to take a stand for what is right, and conveniently out of political danger, will he say something, assuming it’s all true?
As I see it, he is either a coward for not saying something then or a liar for making it all up for personal gain.
I understand your point and agree with your underlying premise.
However, if used properly what the threat level does is communicate to various organizations that based on their SOP’s what they need to do based on the level of a perceved threat.
For example, a regional airport in theory has 25 security measures they are pre-planned to implement based on threat level. This is how it is supposed to work:
SECURITY IMPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR xxxx
Green – 12 measures with 8 people
Yellow – 17 measures with 11 people
Amber – 21 measures with 14 people
Red – 25 measures with 19 people
So, if you get the threat level wrong, you may have implemented too many needless measures and people deployed or to few. Security people would rather error on the former.
It was amusing watching Keef Slobbermann and Wesley Crusher… er, sorry… Rachel Maddow lap this up like a dog returning to its vomit. Maddow’s headline was “CONSPIRACY THEORY PROVEN TRUE.” I laughed.
Let it be known that this is the first time a man has ever given Rachel Madcow an orgasm.
Let it also be known that this is the first time liberals have unquestioningly believed anything Tom Ridge or anyone else from the Bush Administration has ever said.

HI FLYOVERMAN #37. My thoughts exactly on shutting down the useless Department of Homeland “Security”. The WW2 / Cold War era FBI and OSS/CIA did much better jobs with a lot less people. But they weren’t “politically correct”.
***
Another pointless Federal bureaucracy that duplicates the work of other more competent agencies. President Bush did not want to approve setting up this agency–but “folded” under public and congressional pressure to “do something” (anything!) right or wrong and didn’t veto the bill.
***
The PETER PRINCIPLE applies here–once an organization grows too big no useful output occurs, and no outside input is needed anymore. The empire sustains itself checking old ladies shorts at the airport, throwing out perfume bottles, and wanding passengers at the airport to “improve” security. Oh–and don’t “profile” the Imams praying on the bridge into the aircraft!
***
They issue pointless color coded “security alerts”–same level for 8 years! Security is a digital zero or one–you have a threat or you don’t.
***
Send them all to Parris Island for Marine Corps basic training. Give rifles, sack of bullets and grenades, and helmets to the 10 percent that don’t wash out and ship them to Afghanistan to start smoking Talibans.

Hope and Change you can believe in!

Hmmm, I wonder what the LGM Collective has to say in response to this, as it is diametrically opposed to what they posted about Ridge’s assertion yesterday, on another thread -
I will never trust or vote national office for any Republican politician living the North East. Tom Ridge is a RINO WHINO. Intoxicated with liberal media stardom and Republican country club cocktail dinners. I wonder if he and Scott McClellan have candlelight dinners together.
Flyover,
yeah…I can see the value in that. However, this threat level is something which really has little meaning to the general public. And advertising it to the general public, at best opens one up to charges of using it for political purposes and at worst can actually be manipulated for political purposes.
Ridge, another spineless, c.c.repub.
another one out of Penn. the state has an abundance of mealy mouthed go along to get a longs’.
Speaking of mealy mouthed Pennsylvanians was Sen. Sphincter this animated when he was a republican or is this new life for the old traitorous codger?
When used properly, by the right people, it is. It’s the easiest and quickest way to let state and local law enforcement know they need to step things up to a designated course of action.
Interesting that NBC this a.m. reported Ridge’s allegation as FACT, and, hyped it as a “headline” “breaking news” type of story, making it seem like big stuff! Then, the next news item they reported was how “wildly successful” the CFC program is!! Scumbag, treasonous MSM. I have to slum around over there once in a while to get my rightous anger going. And it sure worked this morning! I can’t wait to see NBC crash and burn. It is coming very soon.
I absolutely agree. Well said.
Next he’s going to tell us it was actually Dick Cheney playing bin Laden in that tape.
Many of us from Pa have known this for a long, long time.
As a governor, he made Rendell look good.
Now, that’s an accomplishment!
That’s my definition of a “First Responder.”
OUCH!!!
Talk about a beat down….
OK, Ridge is a weasel, but he’s the best of the Bush administration. At least lying about the terrorism threat to win elections bothered him a little.
FIFY
tossing BS flag:
no way did RINORidge’s time as gov make fast eddie look good, either you don’t live here or you are fibbing.
Ridge started out very good with intent to reduce waste etc, I was involved with that and we got alot done.
Yes it fell by the wayside when boyblunder took over when rinoridge left. Two things he was an abject failure at was privatizing the PLCB and
bringing the teachers union into state level negotiations vs schoolboard level. At anyrate don’t mean to turn this into a PA minutia thread but could
not let stand that he was worse than fast eddie. That is BUNK
He was known throughout DHS as an empty suit. The first two years of DHS were a joke. I met Ridge and was unimpressed. Cherthof.. exact opposite – knowledgeable, demanding, good leader.
I actually agree with Chappy on this – the threat color of the week is probably one of the stupidest things our government has ever done – besides not impeaching Carter (gross, malignant stupidity must be at least a “misdemeanor”).
What little respect people had for that system died when they started having “code orange” for some sectors of society and “Yellow” for others. Oh, and my favorite – keep a stock of duct tape and plastic at home..? Any grown man that doesn’t keep a roll of Duct Tape handy is a fool anyway.
Let’s get this straight: Ridge was pressured to elevate threat levels, at times that were extremely beneficial to W’s reelection campaign (days after the DNC and days before the election itself), based on “intelligence” that was 3-4 years old.
Whether or not Tom Ridge suspects the reason for the well-timed pressure, it’s extremely hard to give the Bushies the benefit of the doubt here, especially in light of them politicizing the war from the start, often to the detriment of the effort (like waiting until after the ’06 midterms to come up with the new strategy so that they could keep lying about how everything was hunky dory).
A sense of conscience about lying not shared by Obama and the Obamaroids, apparently.
As opposed to them pumping a new strategy before the elections, and being accused of “politicizing the war” once again?
Do you think Obama politicized the war? The Democrats in general?
I disagree. As I recall, these threat levels were released to the GP, so that all of us would raise our awareness, post 9/11. This was done on more than one occasion and not just around election time. What I find fascinating is that you lean toward the “Politcal purposes and not Book hype” side of things here, and bend over backwards trying to excuse MSNBC’s blatant picture cropping to expand their white racists with guns agenda.
Things that make you go hmmm.
Do I think Obama has jeopardized the mission and put our troops’ lives at risk in order to save face? No.
You are wtrong it is true. If it were not so, why is it that the media peole don’t even care about anti-war activists now that Obama is in office and has kept the war on?
Compare Charles Gibsons almost slobbering account of Cindy Sheehan in 2005 vs. his treatment of the same woman in 2009 -re: his “enough already” comment. Now that Obama is in office, they want the peaceniks to disappear because they were useful for only one thing attacking Bush.
Don’t be selectively ignorant.
So his insistence that the highly successful surge didn’t jeopardize any lives, presuming, of course, that he could have persuaded more experienced senators of his wrongheaded assumption?
By the way, has he caught Osama bin laden yet? I am just asking because we were told that it was achievable when Bush was president, but he didn’t want to do it…
I was unaware that option was available to him.
What’s the deal with him? What’s in it for him to make such wild-eyed accusations without proof now? Has he been infected with the stupid gene (i.e., lefty gene)?
Ummmm, actually I don’t. The closest thing I said was that this system opened itself up to charges of being manipulated for political purposes.
I have zero interest in buying or reading his book.
I guess I inferred you leaned that way, because your response to flyoverman only mentioned the possibility of political abuse and not anything about possibility of book hype. My mistake.
Ha ha. Next time you want to avoid answering a question, don’t repeat the question immediately prior to NOT answering it.
So now because Ridge comes out with this Bush tell-all, suddenly he’s the “best of the Bush administration”??? You’re nothing but a TPM sycophant and have no thoughts of your own.
I believe the Soviets called them “useful idiots”. I suspect the heads of the Democrat party do likewise.
When your boss ask you to do unethical things, you may do it reluctantly at first.
If such demands become routine, your conscious begins to bite and you become resentful.
When the stress is unbearable from such unethical working condition, you either blow the whistle on your boss, OR quit your job.
The S-hole Tom Ridge did neither between 2001 and 2005.
He is an opportunist and selfish Roach.
He is assured of appearances on the TV circuit for a couple of weeks and some glowing reviews from the news papers nobody is reading anymore.
The book is destined to be on Worst Flop List.
Why, you ask?
Because public school educated Lefties are not interested in reading any books.
Liberal elites KNOW IT ALL, they don’t need to read anything.
If these groups liked to read books, Pelosi and Boxer would both be on the Best Seller list with their recent master pieces.
Is he talking about the same George Bush who along with Karl Rove, Spencer Abraham, and Grover Norquist, were planning on a bill signing at the White House on September 11,2001, in front of radical muslims, that was to stop the Government from using Classified Information to deport radical muslims?
Why, I think this is the same fellow.
Get Paul Sperry’s book “Infiltration” for more on that! Chapter 27.
Hard to know who to believe on this one. The guy trying to sell a book, or a guy trying to get re elected.
