    Today’s Book Recommendation

Harry Stein’s new book I Can’t Believe I’m Sitting Next to A Republican certainly has its funny moments and the cover is close to priceless, but on the whole this is grimly serious work. The subject is the social cost of being a conservative, republican, however one wishes to express the fact that one is in opposition to the dominant left-liberal culture. Whether in family, career, education, or personal well-being, the cost can be enormous and Stein spells it out, not sparing the reader or himself. I suspect that most people who contribute to this site can supply their own unhappy stories. Stein’s message is not one of hope and change is not likely anytime soon. Instead the book is a call for courage and perseverance.

Stein is a first rate writer and at 200 pages, the book is a quick read. It is my worry, however, that with so many fine non-left books out there, this one might get lost in the crush. If you have time, please check it out. Here is the Amazon.com link.

graysonret, I know you are talking about the hypocrasy of the president, but I would like to talk about what you brought up about the F-22 and more waste.

Whether you agree with Air Force leaders or not on the numbers and I don’t remember the exact numbers, they stated we need “X” numbers of F-22s and let’s also throw in the continuing production of C-17s of which they need “Y” numbers. Both of those numbers have been met, but congressional members, in an effort to protect jobs, keep funding production and adding to the Air Force inventories.

What they’re not adding to is the Air Force budget to maintain and operate the increasing number of airplanes the Air Force says they don’t need. The money has to come from somewhere and I’ve seen in the past that what starts getting cut on Air Force bases are “quality of life” programs such as rec centers, libraries, and ect…

As much as they talk about “supporting the troops,” sometimes I have to question if they actually do.

    (gets off the soapbox)

Queen Shelia does not tolerate the peasants failure to show the correct Worship of Her Imperial Importance. 36 years ago this month, a Democratic-majority Congress passed the Fulbright-Aiken Amendment, —”Notwithstanding any other provision of the law, on or after August 15, 1973, no funds herein or heretofore appropriated may be obligated or expended to finance directly or indirectly combat activities by United States military forces in or over or from off the shores of North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia.”

It was a time of division in this country that has never and will never, not in our lifetime, heal. When the reports of Cambodian and Communist Viet Nam reprisals, death camps and ethnic cleansing started coming in the Left told us both it never happened and “the traitors deserved it”. The Leftist street theater mocked putting plastic bags over peoples heads.

And now that same Leftist element, their children and heirs, run every facet of government, control too much of our education, news organizations, television, movies and are determined to control talk radio and the internet. They can’t have their reprisals, death camps, ethnic cleansing and plastic bag parties with anyone watching.

Perhaps President Obama can declare August 15th William Ayres Day?

The energy being used to recharge them burns fuel and costs money. Even Fox News has touted them without asking the 6 very important questions that need to be answered before we hang our hat on this technology.

1)How much does it cost to plug these in overnight?

2)How much fuel is burned by the utility company to deliver that electricity?

3)Are they just moving the fuel use from one location to another without any real savings?

4)Will this result in a higher demand for electricity that the power plants cannot deliver?

5)Will the bottlenecks to building new power plants be relaxed?

6)Will the environmental extremists be prevented from sabotaging new plants with nuisance lawsuits?

Ford was more critical than those reporting on them. Their announcement materials explained the need to insure the electric grid is ready for the new models. I heard many news reports but none went into this aspect of it at all.

One of the objectives of this administration is to raise the price of electricity to promote using less of it. Increasing the demand without increasing the supply will do just that.

Refusing to use more nuclear power also proves the end result they desire is very high electricity prices.

If you are talking the idea that we will sell out our future for what appears to be good for us today, that is what “Faustian” has come to mean. That’s for sure. Not sure how you were using the term so I asked.

Also in today’s world it can mean manipulating the masses with making a thing seem like something its not to those masses for their support. You manipulate the masses perception of a thing by external means to convince them to do what whoever is in control desires. Certainly that could apply to today’s political class as well.

But again that is a far cry from the original idea. In fact God steps in to save Faust because Faust has demonstrated some value and understanding of his, Faust’s, place in creation by striving and continuing to search and not give up. Despite some of the crude things Faust pursued at the hand of the devil.

In other words “Faustian” can cover a great deal of ground. Which is why I much prefer “Frostian”. Especially Jimmy Durante’s Frosty the Snowman.

    So much less complicated.

I have read reports how American officials tried, unsuccessfully, to stop the release of the Lockerbie terrorist bomber. Such as

Robert Gibbs, a spokesman for the US President, said: “It’s the policy of this administration that this individual should serve out his term where he’s serving it right now.”

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has already called Scottish justice secretary Keny MacAskill to urge that Megrahi serve out his term in Scotland.

And seven US senators, including Edward Kennedy and John Kerry, have written to MacAskill urging him to keep Megrahi, 57, behind bars.

Beside this travesty of justice and the pain it causes the families of the victims, there is one obvious glaring point here, and of course the MSM is completely ignoring it. That is, by electing Obama, wasn’t that going to increase our influence with our allies, who would no longer treat us as pariahs? This tragedy highlights the lie that the Europeans (and the rest of the world) finally respect us for shooting ourselves in the foot. Rather, they are getting a great laugh at our expense and snub their noses at us. Just like the Carter years our allies don’t respect us and our enemies don’t fear us. And this circus is just getting under way!

I think that enemies that don’t fear us are naive fools. Anybody in the Middle East alive today should admire the self-restraint of our leaders. I would have nuked them on 9/12.

But as for allies laughing at us…we’re the people subsidizing socialism by essentially supplying their entire national defense. What’s not to laugh at?

    ***
You missed three “biggies”–first the big battery bank in the car costs thousands of dollars and will need replacement in 3 or 4 years–and caused a lot of environmental costs building and disposing of it. Compare this with $80 for a new Honda gas car battery every 3 years.
    ***
Second–there will probably be a TAXPAYER FUNDED subsidy to pay for the battery replacements–who will buy a 3 year old car with this big cost coming soon?
    ***
Third–my El Paso, Texas to White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico daily round trip commute was 100 miles. I think the electric car would have stranded me pretty soon–in the middle of the night in a sandstorm or snowstorm in the middle of nowhere. (My 1973 Ford Pinto did die on the road a lot!) A twenty mile walk if nobody gives you a ride–and they may rob and kill you instead of giving you a ride. And you can’t “pack heat” on a military reservation either.

My 1996 Acura Integra has 280,000 miles–I drove it to work for ten years and it never stranded me. It still runs great–good original air conditioning, CD player, cruise control, etc. all work well. The range of the Chevy Volt, which also has a gas engine, is as long as you provide it with….gas. If your round trip commute each day was 40 miles or less, (or 80 miles if you could borrow an electrical outlet at work), then you would use zero gas in your commute.

Toyota introduced the Prius in the US in 2000. They have yet to replace the first battery pack due to it wearing out.

The battery warranty on the Prius is 100,000 miles or 10 years except in California where it is 150,000 miles.

The batteries are expected to last at least 200,000 miles, but that remains to be seen since none have worn out yet.

Hybrid cars aren’t THE answer, but they are for many people a good idea and I’m glad to have more of them to choose from……and, no, I don’t currently, (is that a pun?) own one.

Not sure why you think they’re not replacing battery packs. A quick trip to a Prius forum indicates that battery death is a sore spot with the owners, especially since the cost of the battery hasn’t come down in the same 9 years you referenced.

Hmmm, well so much for that reference.

I read your link and there were a few who people said they needed battery replacement, one at 130,000 miles and the others, I think around 160,000…so, I guess it can happen.

Still, at the very least, anyone who plans on having the car for less than 10 years and driving it less than 100,000 miles is covered by a non pro-rated battery warranty. After that you’re on your on. I did notice there were post discussions about buying rebuilt battery packs, so I assume they get recycled.

Consumer Reports rates the Prius highly for reliabilty, at least they did the last time I looked.
