And now: Cash for Kitchen Appliances

Washington just doesn’t get it. Spending beyond our means is what got this country into trouble in this first place. Political gimmickry like Cash for (fill-in-the-blank) only exacerbates the root cause. Government has no business encouraging people to take out car loans or home loans — or buy new refrigerators or dishwashers — when they should be saving their money instead.
They don’t get it. Via Business Week:
A $300 million cash-for-clunkers-type federal program to boost sales of energy-efficient home appliances provides a glimmer of hope for beleaguered makers of washing machines and dishwashers, but it’s probably not enough to lift companies such as Whirlpool (WHR) and Electrolux out of the worst down cycle in the sector’s history.
Beginning late this fall, the program authorizes rebates of $50 to $200 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances. The money is part of the broader economic stimulus bill passed earlier this year. Program details will vary by state, and the Energy Dept. has set a deadline of Oct. 15 for states to file formal applications. The Energy Dept. expects the bulk of the $300 million to be awarded by the end of November. (Unlike the clunkers auto program, consumers won’t have to trade in their old appliances.)
…Not surprisingly, appliance makers cheered the news. Electrolux spokesman Tony Evans calls the federal program a “great opportunity to encourage consumers to replace their old appliances.” Lately, cash-strapped consumers have chosen to repair, rather than replace, hobbled dishwashers and other water-intensive appliances, according to industry analysts. Electrolux says it is readying “aggressive” marketing programs that will run parallel with the rebates, and it’s reasonable to expect appliance makers and retailers will devise additional discounts to amplify the rebates’ appeal. “We will be ready to go when the new incentive programs hit the market,” Evans said.
Forget a new fridge. I want cash for an upgrade to Wii Fit Plus. I’m sure the Fitness Czar will approve.

I’m simply flabbergasted.
How much for my 8-track recorder/player?
I am with 30 pcs. I have no words for this.
“$50 to $200 for purchases of high-efficiency household appliances”
LOL, Maybe its $200 if you buy a GE washer or dryer. $50 for other brands.
Awesomely awesome!
More money to go for more Chinese-made P.O.S.’s. Perhaps the gov’t should put a buy American clause in there to keep his minions in the yoon-yuns happy?
I WILL NOT DO IT!
I do not care how much they offer I will NOT trade in my wife! Who is going to find my glasses, keys, watch, hearing aids, wallet, cane, left shoe and lower plate?
Really, I am miffed!
=======
You too? Have any Patsy Cline tapes?
I’m still asking how it is constitutional for the central government to hand money to people because they bought into a govn’t approved purchase and deny others the same monetary reward? Now the taxpayer is asked to fund a kitchen remodel?

The “bailout” news gets more surreal all the time. When you are in a hole and want to get out–STOP DIGGING DEEPER!
***
General Electric stands to gain a lot by another INCOME REDISTRIBUTION scheme–they make the lion’s share of household appliances–under other brand names also. They are big President Obama (PBUH) supporters.
***
When you have a big fire there are 3 ways to put it out–(1)remove the fuel, (2)remove the oxygen, (3)cool the area below the combustion sustaining temperature. THROWING MORE GASOLINE ON THE BLAZE NEVER HELPS! More wild spending at taxpayer expense is what got the blaze going in the first place.

Government, run by goofballs. What could go wrong with these very same goofballs, note the interchangeability of the goofballs from one agency to another .. with them running your health care.
The only ‘cash for anything’ I would go for would be any gun I want to buy. I do not think that would fly in dc though.
L
The HUGE percentage of those who will participate are going to be people who were about to buy in the near future anyway.
Besides subsidizing the sale itself, all it does is take a large number of those sales that would have occurred anyway over the next 6 months to a year and encourage them to happen sooner than they would have eventually happened on their own anyway.
Additionally, these moved-up sales will be compressed to occur over a shorter period thus stressing the supply chain.
The net result will be a spike in activity like what happened with clunkers that will likely be followed by DIP in activity after the program ends.
They should have at least waited long enough to hear this ‘other shoe’ fall with the CARS program before doing it with appliances.
Question is: When will America fully awaken from it’s coma? We’re starting to, but not fast enough.
. . . provided that Joe the Plumber does not profit in any way from this process.
ANOTHER OLIVE BRANCH FOR GENERAL ELECTRIC!
That’s GE for those in Chicago.
How far up “the one’s” posterior is GE CEO Immelt? I’m glad I sold my GE stock the day Jack Welch retired.
After appliances what’s next?
Back in June Sarah Palin said:
I’d like to trade in my old Dell 4300 servers. They use a lot of electricity. How much would I get for an Apple III or a Commodore 64? Will the insanity ever end?
The very question the Founders warned about in the earliest years of the Republic.
Woodrow Wilson rejected our Constitution as a hindrance to War Socialism and the Federal Reserve-the same Federal Reserve he came to fear. Barack Obama and all too may Senators, CongressCritter and Judges reject our Constitution as a Bill Of Negative Right, a relic of an agricultural era, White Man’s Law and other lies.
Be Vigilant as a free people or Obedient as subjects-the choice is yours. If you do not have copies of the Constitution and Federalist/Anti-Federalist Papers you can get them just about anywhere cheap enough. Certainly cheaper than the cost of slavery.
Stand Firm
Okay, maybe I’ve got a case of the Mondays, but I’m really confused by this:
Let me make sure I understand. Rebates will go to the purchase of new, energy-efficient appliances. But what happens to the old ones?
Oh, the dumpster. Rather than repairing the old appliances and say, selling them to the needy for little cost or giving them away free-of-charge. Just like Cash for Clunkers took away cars (and parts) from people who might not be able to plunk down a car payment every month or finance new appliances.
So which is it?
Are we supposed to be a consumer nation that tosses away stuff to buy new?
Or a “green” nation that consumes less and makes things go further?
Because I’m having a hard time putting my finger on the pulse of this one. Time and again we’re told by eco-elites how capitialism is destroying the planet, how we need to consume less, and – most important – how we need to kill off future generations to save the planet for the prairie dogs (or something). Large families (many of whom hand down, repair, and reuse commodities rather than toss and buy new) are lambasted as practically criminals for having “eco-misdemeanors”…
But now we’re in the wrong for doing the very things we’re told are good: namely not unnecessarily using resources or tossing stuff in landfills.
Am I missing something?
Why would one think the libs would learn their lesson from the Cash for Clunkers fiasco?
1. They’ve watched the Canadian and UK health care system failures and want to emulate them.
2. They’ve watched how tax cuts during a recession help bring us out of a recession. What do they do, they raise our taxes.
3. They see where crime committed with guns is highest in strict gun control cities. What do they want? Stricter gun control.
If you can’t learn from other’s bad examples, you’re going to feel the consequences of your own.
“Government has no business encouraging people to take out car loans or home loans. . . “
Unfortunately, it is part of our culture. The Government has always provided incentive and disincentive to promote a particular behaviour.
There are mortgage deductions, farm subsidies (to grow and not grow stuff), subsidized home insurance for homes on the coasts, low interest loans to rebuild in flood plains, etc.
This is not to justify what is done, but to demonstrate that it is in our political blood that we do less than intelligent things to get people to do less than intelligent things.
I am thinking that it might be a good thing having Mr Obama as President, because everything being done appears to be the last straw on the camels back. Not only is it a good thing to stop adding straws, but maybe, just maybe, it is time to begin removing the old straws, too.
Like this healthcare socialism being proposed. Get rid of all socialism, start by the old straws from the camels back. End the socialism of Medicare. End the socialism of Medicare. End the socialism of Social Security. End the deductions for children. If you want them, you should be able to pay for them. End the home mortgage deductions.
And, absolutely no more subsidies to motivate people to do what they wouldn’t ordinarily do under common sense circumstances.
no but I do have a Beatles “Let It Be” 8-track…any takers??
I have the following items I have been hanging on to despite my wife’s nagging:
Victrola VIII record player
Royal FP typewriter
Commodore 64 computer
Rotary dial phone (color black)
Zenith black and white TV
Lots of sort-of working power tools too. I’m pretty sure my patience will pay off if I can just hold out a few more months after the congress approves a Cash for Junk program.
Z,
I hope you are right, brother. I truly do.
I have two apple 2e computers that info is on the five inch dics for an estate I am executrix for. I would love to get rid of those things, but can not until the estate is settled. They take up lots of room.

I am sure this will do a lot to stimulate the unemployed 10% of the country that has no money spend on anything and they other 50% of the employed that are too afraid to spend anything fearing a layoff.

These idiots are so oblivious to reality. Grey Poupon for me, but not Thee
No. I wouldn’t say that you are missing anything. Other than the fact that liberals are the biggest hypocrites known to man. They also speak out of both sides of their mouths.

You are so right in that we all need a refresher course and a good dose of what it means to be an American. Most under the age of 30 have never read the beautiful message of The Constitution of The United States.
The tremendous debt we owe the Chinese and others around the world leaves me thinking this is the same brand dogbone the Scots offered the Libyans…I want to scream at our creditors worldwide to shut off the credit. I want our conservative leaders to wake up and speak out at every opportunity that we cannot continue down this path. When our economy is destroyed, the civilized world goes with it. We’ll not even be able to feed ourselves, much less anyone else.
I have a 1 year old LG dishwasher. Since it’s a CA appliance, it’s “green.” Which means it’s gets the dishes wet. Clean? Well, that’s another matter. I generally have to clean the dishes before I put them in the dishwasher.
Can I get in on this scheme? I want to buy a dishwasher from a normal State that doesn’t force appliance makers to turn their products into politically correct pieces of garbage.
I could use a new rifle. I wonder when “Cash for Carbines” will begin?
The only clunker I want to trade in is our President. Unfortunately, we need to wait 3 more years to do that.
In the meantime, I should get a stainless steel .38 snubbie and a concealed carry license. I could also use a few more boxes of .45 ACP shells.
Hey! Do you think they’d notice that the MP5 I turn in is really just my son’s broken airsoft rifle?
No? Sweet!
I bought all new appliances 3 months ago. Where is my
handoutRebate?look at where immelt has led ge stock, and look at how much that clown has invested in obama policies (ecogreen commercials etc) that he has to be paid back, but a consumer report just said last week whirlpool was way better than ge on product these days.
This is a precursor to Cap and Trade. In that bill, you won’t be able to sell your home with any appliances that do not meet their environmental requirements.
And good for those crash strapped consumers-and perhaps they would not be quite as cash strapped if they were taught an old Americanism (And I best most people have one)
Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do
Do without
A penny saved is a penny earned
Avoid getting into debt
And of course:
AVOID DEBT AND SLOTH…
1. Debt enslaves, especially when cosigning for another – Pr 6:
1-5; 17:18
2. Laziness will bring poverty – Pr 6:6-11; 10:4; 13:4
— So Christians are to be industrious, and avoid indebtedness
– cf. Ro 12:11; 13:8
And if you can handle Polonius:Hamlet Act 1, scene 3, 75–77
Neither a borrower nor a lender be,
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.
(Shakespeare was actually Russian-he was expelled from Siberia for cruelty to undergraduates!)
Perhaps these ugly times will teach some old lessons-that and I think Obama is going to suck up all the available credit.
jsr: If you even consider turning over a Victrola VIII record player to Fedzilla I will sell all I have and hunt you down.
Now I love you dearly darlin’ but we all have our limits.
They do, actually. At least in Colorado where a semester of Government is required in high schools. But that doesn’t mean they actually hear what it says. My kids have had lessons on the Constitution at least 3 times over their school careers, but most of the same kids in the same classes don’t know ANYTHING. It’s like watching Jay Leno’s Jaywalking.
The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, as well as all other history, is emphasized in our home, over and over. Current events are always a top topic and related to our past history. How many other households do you think do the same?
If it’s not American Idol or Sex In The City, most people just don’t want to hear it.
Gov just can’t keep its sticky finger out of the private sector. This is another government induced bubble about to burst.
there won’t ever be a program like that…they’ll just enter your house, take them, and won’t bother to reimburse you a penny of what you paid for them….
And these idiots (to be kind) can’t figure out, or don’t give a turd why the majority of the US citizens think so low of them!
We get what we elect!!!
Rifles? What rifles? Ain’t no rifles here. I sold ‘em all at the last gun show.
RE: Cash for Carbines
Ruby Ridge–let that be remembered by all.
God is our witness we do not want war; but if war it must be than By God Let It Start Here.

Battle at Lexington Green, 1775
The officer then swung his sword, and said, ‘Lay down your arms, you damned rebels, or you are all dead men. Fire!’
The Scot, the Englishman, the Frenchman and the Canadian gave up their guns and rights as a Free People all too easily, let us be vigilant and pray ours are not so weak a people. Governments have killed more of their people than all the criminals combined. Unarmed citizens are much easier to control and march into the camps as Obama’s friend William Ayres has sworn to do.
You did
what a coincidence-me too!
how can it be…unbelievable, but yet how could one expect anything different.
Who are these dimwits that come up with these cures that are worse than the disease? They did not learn one thing from the cash for clunkers fiasco or the proposed cash of coffins…gads these people are really, really stupid!
CommonSense #37
Thank you for nurturing the next generation of Americans. We can only pray your children will find others to share their knowledge.
How many households that teach their children to be responsible citizens you ask? Not many. They haven’t the time to even get to know their children much less see to their civic educations.
Great, now my hard earned tax dollars are being used to remodel Sharon Jasper’s kitchen.
Dang; there’s another thing I did wrong when I thought I was doing it right: I bought myself two EnergyStar appliances last year to increase efficiency and eco-friendliness. I did it with my own hard-earned money, and now it looks like you can also do it: with my hard-earned money! Obama needs to change his name to Robbin’ [from the] Hood!
Or even Robbin’ the Hood, the elderly, young and future generations?
Al Qaeda has already beaten us to the idea; they just announced their new program to get modern rifles into the hands of jihadists – “Kash for Kalashnikovs”
Hey, Obama had to pay back his buddy Immelt at GE some how for his help in getting him elected.
If SubZero, Wolf, Viking, Dacor, Thermador, et al., qualify, I’m in.
Iowa, you took the words right out of my mouth. You think a rebate of $2000 would be a good start?
