Marshall C. Sanford, will you PLEASE GO NOW!

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 26, 2009 02:04 PM

My opinion of Mark Sanford is well-known. So is my repeated call for him to go away and quick.

It’s taken too long, but South Carolina Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer has finally asked the lying liar to step down — and state House Republicans are meeting this weekend to discuss impeachment:

Lt. Gov. [Andre Bauer] announced today he is asking Gov. Mark Sanford to resign, saying “serious misconduct” by Sanford as well as “continuing distractions” are making it impossible for the state to move forward.

Bauer promised he would forgo his own plans to run for governor if Sanford resigns in the next month or the Legislature impeaches him by then.

He would not detail what he considers “serious misconduct,” the wording used in the state’s constitution for impeachment, but said it is clear that Sanford is absorbed in his defense and that makes “it virtually impossible for our state to solve the serious problems we are facing without a change of leadership.”

Sanford has been under political attack and media scrutiny ever since he returned from a secret, five-day trip to Argentina and announced June 24 that he had engaged in a year-long extramarital affair with an Argentine woman.

His wife and four sons have since moved out of the Governor’s Mansion and First Lady Jenny Sanford told Vogue magazine in a story published last week that she believes her husband has been “obsessed” with the other woman and has been going through a midlife crisis.

Some of Sanford’s staff watched the Statehouse news conference but returned to their offices immediately afterward without any response.

Bauer’s call, which he repeated in a letter to Sanford, came three days before House Republicans plan to discuss impeachment at a caucus retreat in Myrtle Beach.

With apologies to Dr. Seuss: Marshall C. Sanford, will you PLEASE GO NOW!

You can go by bus. You can go by jet. I don’t care how, just get, get, get.

Despite his moral failings, Sanford is a good governor. Bauer is a hypocrite to demand Sanford’s resignation. Bauer himself abused his office by using it to get out of traffic tickets for multiple speeding instances (and I’m not talking about a mere 5 or 6 miles over the limit; I’m talking about deadly speeds) and verbally accosting at least one highway patrol officer who dared to enforce the law.

Sanford’s affair has nothing to do with his being governor. And, no, he didn’t charge the government for the costs. This is nothing more than political pandering at its finest.

I understand why Michelle and others want Sanford out. And if this had anything to do with his office, I would be right there with you. But it didn’t and Bauer would do far more damage to the state than Sanford has done or could do. South Carolina is replete with the Good Ol’ Boy system and Bauer is right in the thick of it all.

Nothing good can come of Sanford’s resignation.

Or are you in favor of the wasteful, nepotistic spending that has plagued the state for so long and continues thanks to the likes men like Harrell, McConnel, Knotts, et al? Sanford calls it like it is. South Carolina’s system of government is dysfunctional at best. The SC governor is the weakest governor in the country in terms of power to overhaul a broken system. But Sanford hasn’t let that stop him from trying.

And don’t start with the school system. The governor is powerless to change things on the executive and judicial levels, let alone the educational system. We had the opportunity to elect someone to SecEd who could have done some good; instead, we pick yet another loser in Jim Rex. We have the system of education in SC we deserve because we keep electing people like Rex.

If they will lie/cheat/steal to/from family and trusted associates, then why wouldn’t they lie to and/or steal from the people who put their trust in him/her.

We need to demand that our elected officials be an example of honesty and morality, not excuse them for being only a little corrupt.

I’d hate to see someone worse step in for Sanford too, but if the voters allow then they get the Government they deserve.

I voted for him the first term and didn’t the second term and I’m glad I had no part in it.

I didn’t think anyone could literally list anything good he did for this state other than take care of Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach and all our tourist areas. He stated once on national TV that he would never want his children in a SC public school. How sad that he never made a slight attempt to make our schools decent and not the disgrace that they indeed are.

His fiscal responsibility? As we’re finding out…he meant that just for us but not himself. ;)

What? You mean that if I just stop discussing it some dem isn’t going to harp on this????? They’d love him to stay on, just to weaken real conservatives in that state elsewhere longer term…and the longer term is what is important.

The bottom line is that he lied about the affair, and unless it can be proven that his affair solely came out of his salary as governor, he still has legal problems which are in fact impeachable, which if he does not resign, is a probability for he has become a liability to himself, his wife, his party. Moreover, his continual babbling about his Christian faith-which he tore to shreds like a dimwit-has destroyed his credibility.

If you want to wrap yourself around this guy, you can go ahead and do so. Again, I do not know what you are going to gain by it.

Other than for the above, thank you for chirping.

To your bold points. He doesn’t represent ‘conservatism’ unless you say he does. If he’s conservative, that’s great. . . but he’s not the sole arbiter of conservatism.

He’s not wrapping himself in Republicanism. His Lt. Gov is a R too who doesn’t think he represents R’s well. You don’t think he represents R’s well. He’s a man who made mistakes in his PERSONAL LIFE.

The more you talk about his ‘misuse of government funds’ the bigger the issue becomes. That’s not really important to you because he paid back the questionable amounts. The more you talk about it, the more legs this story will have. And the Dems will say it’s the republicans who think republicans are criminals.

It’s like the US investigating the CIA. Why do your enemy’s job for them? Especially if it doesn’t affect you.

You have an issue with his ‘misuse of government funds’ because you are mad that he cheated on his wife. He’s come clean on the funds he’s used.

In NC, we are STILL investigating our former gov for misuse of funds. His travel records for using highway patrol funds for the entire year of 2005 are missing. The feds are looking for them. He was a D, his Lt. Gov is now the Gov and she’s a D. Lots of our D legislators are now in jail for violating federal law.

Again, I’d trade our corruption for this ‘corruption’ in a second. But I’m not wrapping myself around Sanford specifically. I just don’t think this issue is as important as people here seem to think it is.

Our former gov’s wife was given a cushy job at a state college. They made the job up for her (200,000/year). When outrage forced them to get rid of her, they didn’t refill the position.

I could continue about WHY our D speaker is now in JAIL (not impeached, in JAIL). . . but I’ve seen gov corruption. Sanford’s is tame.

I cannot imagine why Sanford is so determined to cling to any last vestige of power. He is toast for at least the next decade and probably for life. Why won’t he just clear the decks and let South Carolina get on with business without the soap opera?

Is it really necessary to put everyone through this mess until the end of his term?

I mean even Spitzer had the decency to resign!

Agreed. Every time I see this guy on TV, I cringe. If he would resign, at least he could retain a semblance of dignity. But to continue to whine and babble about how much the state “needs him” after he abdicated his responsibility to fly to Argentina to satisfy his lust, is just too much to bear. He abandoned his responsibility, deceived and defrauded the people of South Carolina, and has brought shame to himself and to his family, as well as to his state. TIME.TO.GO.

I remember all too well the sordid details of our fine president Clinton who shamed our country with his inability to control himself, and his penchant for lying. For months on end, the nation was treated to a nightly parade of trash talk. As a direct result of Clinton’s actions, our public standards of decency were permanently lowered. Now we have Sanford who can’t even see why he should no longer hold the public trust, after he threw it away.

I’m not obsessing either…nature takes care of its own.

How do you know what is important to me?

It was Sanford’s actions that brought this imbroglio upon him…not me.. and not the next critic. Get it?

You have an issue with his ‘misuse of government funds’ because you are mad that he cheated on his wife.

I could honestly care less about his wife. She made her life with him and she will have to deal with his adultery in whatever way she chooses.

I suspect that the charges of misuse of government assets and funds will turn out to be overstated if not completely fabricated. It is a convenient lever to use against someone who is now wildly unpopular.

The problem is the guy is now completely ineffective. If the Lt. Governor is also a slime-ball then I guess trading one slime-ball for another may teach the good people of South Carolina to stop voting for slime-balls!

Frankly, it is time all of us learned that lesson. We have a chance to demonstrate our ability to learn in 2010 and again in 2012. Time will tell…
