Rush and Beck on the Fairness Doctrine threat

By Michelle Malkin  •  August 27, 2009 11:19 AM

In case you missed it yesterday, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck spotlighted Team Obama’s direct and indirect threats to free speech — and how the Fairness Doctrine (or some stealthier form of it) might be reinstituted.

Watch the whole thing.

Rush has the full transcript. An excerpt:

BECK: Now joining me on the phone is radio talk show host Mr. Rush Limbaugh. Rush?

RUSH: Glenn Beck. How are you, sir?

BECK: Very good, sir. I want to play something for you. I don’t know if you just saw it, but I want to play it again. This is the new diversity officer for the FCC, a newly created position. This is what he said at a speech or talk he was giving about Chavez’s Venezuela and how the media work down there. Watch this.

MARK LLOYD: In Venezuela, with Chavez, you really had an incredible revolution — democratic revolution — to begin to put in place things that were going to have impact on the people of Venezuela. The property owners and the folks who were then controlling the media in Venezuela rebelled — worked, frankly, with folks here in the US government — worked to oust him. He came back and had another revolution, and Chavez then started to take the media very seriously in his country.

BECK: Rush, I find that breathtaking.

RUSH: I find the whole administration breathtaking, Glenn. You’re doing great job this whole week. I mean I saw Sarah Palin even “tweeted” about what you’re doing, urging people to watch. This whole administration is as radical and far left as any that the country has ever had, and what they’re trying to do here to communications is simply stifle dissenting voices. They’re trying to wipe out any opposition. If you look at Barack Obama and his track record as a politician, it is to clear the playing field. He doesn’t even like debating his opponents. He just wants to get rid of them. And this “diversity czar” comes from a fringe, radical, Saul Alinsky-type of background; and the things that he’s talking about doing — and I watched your show for the first half hour today — but the things he’s talking about doing to shut down radio are simply un-American. It’s not enough to say that it’s not constitutional.

It’s simply un-American, and make no bones about it, folks, Glenn is right — and I think he’s maybe underselling a little bit about as far as their intentions are concerned. The stimulus plan! Glenn, look at what they’re doing to the US economy. Anybody with a sense of economic literacy would know this is not how you create jobs. You do not rebuild the private sector. This is being done on purpose. All of these disasters are exactly what Obama wants. The more crises, the better. The more opportunity for government to say, “Let us come in and fix the problem.” His number one opposition is on radio and Fox News. His number one opposition is on radio. They can’t go Fairness Doctrine because it’s too obvious. So they’re trying to do this backdoor route with “diversity” and ownership, a 100% tax on operating in order to pay public radio because they’re supposedly fair. It’s insidious. But I don’t think it’s gonna work in the end because the American people are too informed, Glenn. They’re too aware of it. Their radio means too much to them. Their free speech — freedom in general — means way too much to them. And just as they’re fighting back on health care and a number of other things, so will they fight back on this.

Flashback:

Barack Obama has a stunning lack of tolerance for free speech. And one thing Americans can expect from an Obama administration, and a Democratic-controlled Congress, is a legislative attempt to bring back the so-called Fairness Doctrine, which will limit free speech and diminish the conservative influence on talk radio.

A new ATI-News/Zogby International poll released on Oct. 26 made it clear that those who intend to vote for Obama support re-establishing the Fairness Doctrine.

The poll asked likely voters, “Some members of Congress have discussed reinstating the Fairness Doctrine for broadcasting. The Fairness Doctrine requires radio stations to provide equal air time for opposing viewpoints.”

“If reinstated, regulators determine if both sides of an issue are equally presented. There is concern among some broadcasters that this equal presentation could lead to dropping some popular conservative talk shows in an effort to avoid airing less popular liberal talk shows. Knowing this, do you support or oppose reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine?”

Those likely to vote for Obama support reinstating the Fairness Doctrine by a margin of 49 percent to 36 percent, and Democrats support it 47 to 38 percent. Independents marginally support the fairness doctrine 42 percent to 40 percent, though this is within the poll’s margin of error. (The remaining respondents all replied “not sure.”)

Those polled were then asked, “Some say the Fairness Doctrine could result in popular radio shows, such as Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh, to be taken off the air in some markets. Knowing this, do you support or oppose reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine?”

When informed that the Fairness Doctrine might take Limbaugh and Hannity off the air, the percentage of Democrat likely voters who support the Fairness Doctrine rose to 53 percent. The percentage of Obama supporters supporting the Doctrine rose four points to 53 percent. However, the percentage of Independents opposed to the Fairness Doctrine rose to 49 percent.

Great point, PP, and one much on my mind yesterday.

Sometimes I wish that politicians (and media commentators and journalists) never even met one another, face-to-face.

To all the clubby GOP senators reminiscing about what a great chum Teddy was personally, I say: Who gives a rat’s butt how much fun it was to tip one back with him and slap his back. We sent you to Washington to ****FIGHT**** him.

I don’t know if Beck is right, or if he’s a bit overwrought. Allah, over at Hot Air, seems to take a lot of what Beck says with a grain of salt. Speaking for myself, I saw a piece by Beck a few weeks back about the Nazi takeover of Germany and the German health system which was just historically wrong…he had events completely out of sequence.

Nonetheless, we are left on our guard. Is President Obama a real-life Jake Featherston?

They have never said it outright but all libertarians and conservatives see this as a communist Congress and Administration working hard to bring the system down. Once that happens, they have the pretext for total control of the economy and civil liberties.

I’m sure the “governing” communists were stunned that their planned sub-prime crisis did not fully and immediately accomplish that. Prison is too lenient for these traitors.

I am consoled that I am not alone in these feelings of dread, and suspicion. Finally, we have a small group of brave patriots willing to do what’s right. May God protect them, and us.

Thank you Glenn, Rush, Michelle, Mark, Sean, and so many others than are fighting this fascist takeover. We must be prepared for what’s coming!

I have been thinking along similar lines. We need protocols in place to facilitate conservative conversation even after ObamaState tries to shut it down. There also need to be mechanisms to sustain the talk radio hosts through an alternate means of distribution.

I think about peer-to-peer technologies like like Napster and BitTorrent, not that more primitive approaches like email lists and trees should be ignored.

Of course, you have got to assume that resistance, by such means, to an ObamaState assault on internet free speech would eventually be overcome by the a technological response from our Washington masters. So we need also to think beyond the internet.

I fear this can only turn out badly, unless a majority of elected officials begin to see the light. That won’t happen unless their elected positions are put at risk, and they begin to fear the voter.

Obama wants the U.S. to become a “Banana Republic” so bad, well, maybe he should rethink that…those places have military coups to replace leadership. If he continues, he may just get what he wants (if all Constitutional means fail.)

Ronald Radosh explores the case of Van Jones. Jones is Obama’s green jobs “czar” (his formal title is Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation at the White House Council on Environmental Quality). As green jobs “czar,” Jones’s responsibility is to coordinate the stimulus spending to assure that a hefty portion of it goes to projects that promote green energy.

In his relatively recent past Jones was a Marxist revolutionary. From 1992 until 2002, Jones was a member of a radical communist group that was dedicated to “organizing a revolutionary movement in America.” Does Jones remain a Marxist revolutionary today?

The White House has declined to provide a straight answer to the question. We will accordingly assume that, in Jones’s case, “commissar” would be more like it.

UPDATE: A commenter points out that Jones is not a “czar,” but rather an “adviser.” The Wall Street Journal distinguished between the job titles here in the case of Jones. Does the title of Obama administration “czar” have formal legal contours? The Chicago Tribune asks: how many czars are there? In any event, I think commissar is the more appropriate honorific, and Victor Davis Hanson makes the case that the Marxist spirit pervades the White House.

First of all, they don’t know for sure if the flu will mutate into something else that the vaccine won’t touch. What is in the vaccine? Will it work? We really don’t know. I don’t want it and I don’t want my family to have it either.

Bad, bad stuff is going on that we don’t even know about yet. The Unfairness Doctrine is perfect for these communists–they can use it to propagandize every aspect of the media. I work with people everyday who seem to have absolutely no clue or concern with what’s going on with this administration, or they don’t care. I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees – and I mean it–we just can’t give up on our Constitution and losing our Freedom of Speech would make us servants to these marxists masters.

Rush was just saying that someone at the CDC has some courage to question the number that they are using in the reports. 90,000 is the number. It wasn’t clear if it was 90,000 who have been diagnosed or 90,000 who could be diagnosed.

lgm, did you take your medicine today? Your writing style doesn’t read like your normal stupid self. I agree that Glenn Beck is an alarmist. His sidekick, Stu Burguiere, is always calling him on the crazy stuff he says. However, if you listen to him, he inserts a lot of disclaimers and exhortations to do our own research. I don’t believe that Obama could get away with raising and sending out armies of thugs to force his will (although, I believe he would try if he thought it would work). The scary thing that GB mentioned is the possibility of martial law or other form of suspension of the Constitution (but don’t we already have that?). This would be due to a national threat – real or perceived – that the Federals would use to justify such a suspension. That prospect is frightening under any administration. Does anyone doubt, given Obama’s track record and shady personal associations, that it is doubly dangerous on his watch? After all, Obama’s Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel, said, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”!!!
