On a related note: I saw Reese Witherspoon on Ellen (I only stopped channel surfing because I think Reese is HOT) where she commented that one of her most used momisms was “I am your mother not your friend.” Ellen could not grasp the concept. No big surprise there given her lifestyle. For the record, I think Ellen has every right to live her life as she sees fit and I actually enjoy her humor.

As the mother of an early teen girl, I can tell you raising one is both wonderful and hair-raising. Comes with the territory, wouldn’t miss it for the world.

These are the same parents who drive their kids 2 blocks to the bus stop in a Hummer and sit there with the engine running until the bus comes. Even in nice weather.

The school is less than a 5 minute drive.

How did my grandparents say it? Something like “They don’t have the brains God gave them”.

I feel the same way myself. There was a time, early in my marriage, that my husband didn’t want children and I was the one urging us to procreate. This was in my 20′s when I was more energetic and gung-ho. Right now, part of me just doesn’t want to deal with it, knowing what I know about our culture and degraded public education system.

It isn’t even possible to keep your kid away from a culture that no longer reveres childhood, innocence, and exploits them mercilessly (just see the commercials selling crap to kids on tv). I grew up in an age (the ’80′s) where Madonna was a sexualized icon to young girls. It can only go downhill from there.

As a teacher and maybe parent, all one can do is learn the word no and stick to it. Be there and parent when so many other parents just give in and look the other way. Be there to guide and tell your kids to enjoy their childhood and not give in to the evils of peer pressure or worse yet, pop culture.

This is why parenting has become so undervalued. Many of the babyboomer generation passed down their drug-taking, addiction-ridden ways to their kids, making parenting none essential. So many kids don’t have role models even in their own parents, so this kind of perverted crap that shortens kids’ childhoods with no challenge from the very people who should be there for their kids is disheartening.

It’s very saddening. And disturbing.

I read in the San Francisco Chronicle a few years about a store in San Francisco that takes Barbies and turns them into x rated figurines. It wouldn’t be a shock to learn that this store is responsible for the stripper dolls.

The t-shirt pasties are real. I found them here: Twisted Twee I am still looking for the doll, but I did look around and find a photo that wasn't cropped as much as Michelle's. That photo shows that these were on a shelf next to other items, but it's unclear as to where. Photo
