Union politicking at the pulpit

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 1, 2009 10:02 AM

Church sermons that espouse conservative values are met with hysterical cries of “theocracy!”

But orchestrated campaigns by Big Labor bosses to fill churches with Democrat-supporting pulpit speeches are met with…the sounds of crickets chirping.

Check out the AFL-CIO’s latest initiative to preach Obamacare at houses of faith across the country:

Each Labor Day weekend, Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ) and the AFL-CIO sponsor the Labor in the Pulpits /on the Bimah /in the Minbar program, which highlights the shared goals of the faith community and the union movement for a new vision for justice in our communities.

As part of Labor in the Pulpits, union members serve as guest speakers in congregations to speak out about their faith, work and the union movement. Some AFL-CIO central labor councils use this program as an opportunity to host a Faith and Labor meeting in which participants discuss important issues facing workers in their local communities and reaffirm their shared commitments to social justice. This year, more than 1,000 faith congregations are participating in Labor in the Pulpits.

Over the years, the Labor in the Pulpits program has helped thousands of congregations focus their Labor Day weekend services on the injustices facing low-wage workers and the religious community’s efforts to support those workers’ struggles for living wages and family-sustaining benefits.

Says IWJ Executive Director Kim Bobo:

Labor in the Pulpits /on the Bimah /in the Minbar expresses in a very clear way the bonds between religion and labor. Every major religion teaches respect for work and the moral duty to care for the poor and foster social justice-the same goals that the union movement holds.

Those shared goals create a natural bond between us. That bond is even stronger this year as we stand poised to bring about real change in our country from reforming health care to stopping wage theft and making our workplaces more democratic.

Sounds good to me. Let them speak. It’s a free country.

Just make sure that if they say something you disagree with, you ask the Pastor (or Rabbi, or Priest, etc.) to give you equal time.

Now… if you don’t GET that equal time, then it’s time to make a stink.

This is so typical of the Liberal Wad, demonize Christianity, belittle everything associated with religion except when it comes to pushing an agenda. Now the Wad is Holier than thou and religion is just another name for Union. This tack and behavior makes me sick on so many levels I cannot begin to count em.

Oh, sorry. I thought the union movement’s goals were to bully and claw every bit of benefit and wage increase they can extort from the companies they work for. In the case of the UAW, committing murder-suicide in the process.

Gee, unions talking about “stopping wage theft”…. now THERE is an oxymoron, spouted by a moron.

    Care for the poor? Yes.

Social justice? First please define that, and then show me where in the Bible “social justice” is mentioned as being a duty of government.

We have obligations to other believers. If you are a Christian or a Jew the Bible is loaded with references of how we are to care for other believers.

But I don’t recall “big government” and “organized labor” being mentioned.

From your own treasure, not from the government largesse. It means sharing your good fortune as an individual and through the efforts of your church.

So I guess *they* get to determine when the separation-of-church-and-state line gets crossed. Seems that any talk at all about politics should remove that church from the tax shelter, regardless of what side you’re espousing.

So I guess the unions are against withholding tax? And against “graduated” tax systems. I guess they should then also be against sameness in wages (every honest person knows some workers work harder and accomplish more than other workers – paying them the same is theft from the one who accomplishes more).

Didn’t the unions get a bailout? I’m sure that if you “follow the (TARP) money” you’ll find the unions have a pretty good portion.

If so, then that makes them beholden to the gov’t. Separation of church and state anyone?

If my observation while in attendance at Bible believing, Bible teaching churches is correct, you won’t find any liberal speakers getting up in front of those congregations. The vast majority are very conservative both spiritually, socially and politically. A liberal in one of these churches is as rare as a born again Christian in a homosexual lead liberal denomination.

Definitely look for the union label on the rock. Then turn the rock over. You might just find a Democrat functionary underneath. Now, for those who are cool with that, fine. Head on over this Sunday and knock yourself out.

[Personally, I would prefer to avoid the Purple Monster or at the very least, think twice about it, but that's just me.]

As an example, here is how the local Univeralist Unitarian church describes its upcoming (9/6) Sunday Sermon:

A group of citizens from Snohomish County has worked together for more than a year to draft a human rights ordinance for Snohomish County. This ordinance provides tools for individuals to use when they feel they have been the victims of any sort of discrimination. It seeks to bring parties together through dispute resolution methods rather than expensive and divisive litigation.

    [Emphasis mine.]

Now here is the presenter (from wikipedia.org):

Luis Moscoso is the Director of Government Relations for the Washington Public Employees Association/UFCW Local 365 in Olympia, Washington. He oversees and coordinates the WPEA’s Legislative-Political program and issues advocacy agendas. He is responsible for evaluating and facilitating the union’s strategic, operations and education programs. Mr. Moscoso is serving his second term as Secretary of the Washington State Democratic Party.

Have a question what his “dispute resolution methods” are? Come to the party and ask away.

The fools who believe that they can live any way they want while their pastors preach from the Oprah book of the month and still be “Christians” are the same fools who believe the union dogma. Just give money and the union takes care of this life; the liberal “church” takes care of the next life. They will be sadly mistaken believing in either.

The churches are tax-exempt. If they speak about politics and take sides, they need to be reported. They should lose their tax-exempt status. If my pastor started spewing liberal garbage from the pulpit, I would tell him, privately, that if I hear it again, I will report him to the IRS. Fortunately, I haven’t heard anything like that. However, now that my synod has approved gays in committed relationships being pastors, I will probably be leaving that church anyway. Sigh.

So, what else is new? Obama has been preaching from the day he started campaigning except from the Alinski book, not the Bible. He only uses the Bible when it suits his purpose and wants to get the congregation fired up.

Can I get a “hallelujah” anyone? Maybe an “amen” or two. Praise Obama and pass the stimulus money on down. Let’s not hear any jingling in the collection plate, only the rustle of high denomination bills and checks. There you go brothers and sisters. Remember, I throw the money against the wall after every service. What sticks to the wall belongs to the church, what don’t is mine! Praise be!!!
