happy2behere, are you saying your parents actually went to the meetings and determined for themselves that it was a racist organization or your parents just believed the rumors and so wouldn’t even consider stepping in the door?

Anyone who feels at home on this blog would definitely feel at home in the Birch Society. But you have to give them a chance. Once you do, it won’t take long for you to realize you’ve been duped.

Thanks for sharing that. I never really knew names of such people who tried to discredit the Society. If my mother was still here, she would probably know.
I will read it in full.
All I know is there has been nothing at all in my exposure to the Society, reading materials, communications, events I’ve attended, etc. that would indicate racism in any way. This goes back to when I was growing up. I am virtually the same age as the organization.

But, is your only beef against them that they had a racist reputation in the 60′s?

If your parents encountered racists within the group, I accept that 2nd-hand observation.

But it’s also possible that others labelled them as “racist” simply because they opposed the Civil Rights Act. The JBS claims that they opposed the CRA because it violated the 10th Amendment. It’s possible that the CRA supporters didn’t want to debate the act on constitutional grounds, and found it easier to just label the JBS as “racist”.

Even to this day, anyone who opposes the “progressive” (Socialist) agenda is labeled a “racist” (see today’s HotAir piece on the comments of Obama’s former pastor of 20 years).

The “racist” smear has been thrown around so much by the true racists (people like “Rev” Jeremiah Wright) that I really don’t pay attention to it anymore.

Although I was in elementary school during the 60′s civil rights movement, I distinctly remember the Bircher Society as having a very racist reputation. My parents supported Goldwater, but decided not to join the Society where they had many friends, because it was too racist, even for them.

Perhaps you buy their explanations for not supporting the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it’s your choice. But given an historical and personal perspective, I could never do it. There must be other organizations to can support that have a less tainted reputation.

The [John Birch] society opposed aspects of the civil rights movement in the 1960s because of its concerns that the movement had communists in important positions… The society opposed the 1964 Civil Rights Act, saying it was in violation of the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution and overstepped the rights of individual states to enact laws regarding civil rights.
