Unruly moment, manufactured outrage

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 10, 2009 07:44 AM

GOP Rep. Joe Wilson apologized for his outburst last night when he called out one of President Obama’s many lies.

I’ve never seen Nancy Pelosi’s face show so much emotion in my adult lifetime.

The Left is in high dudgeon — never letting a moment of manufactured outrage go to waste.

Sure, members of Congress should leave the heckling to town hall protesters.

But it was Obama who said himself in the speech: “If you misrepresent what’s in the plan, we will call you out.”

That’s what Joe Wilson was doing, wasn’t it?

And that’s what Democrats would undoubtedly tell you they were doing during George W. Bush’s 2005 State of the Union Speech when they booed and shouted down his remarks about the need for Social Security reform. Omri Ceren remembers:

***

Allahpundit, via Twitter: “Joe Wilson’s big mistake: Not saving the ‘liar’ catcall for when The One was pushing his moronic ‘deficit-neutral’ mega-lie.”

Obama now just tells lie after lie after lie after lie and gets away with it. No illegals, no increase in cost, no death panels, no loss of insurance.

Why not write in the bill that illegals are excluded? If they are not specifically excluded, they will be included and Obama knows it. He IS a liar. Of course, we all know that since he told us he didn’t know about Rev Wright’s racist rhetoric after 20 years of listening to him.

McCains office should get whacked today too as he is an enabler to Obama. He should be out there defending Wilsons position that Obama lied about illegals. Instead, he is all up in arms over the civility issue. Civility vs lies about illegals in health care. Which is more important? Go Joe!

Maybe this is the first time a congressman made a direct verbal attack on a president during such a speech, but I would really like input from the folks here about whether they can remember any televised speech given by a president to congress in which he accused, so repeatedly, the voters, members of the opposing party and segments of the media for lying (he did use the word at least two times), misrepresenting, and flat out doing anything possible to undermine reform of any kind.

Sure Joe was a bad boy for shouting out like that but he apoligized for his lack of civility.

Now lets turn the talk to what he was saying. Isn’t it true? Instead of talking about his outburst, lets talk about the substance of his statement.

If Republicans controlled the MSM like Dems do, this would the the tome of the day. If the state contolled media continue to talk about it, hopefully, it will morph into the discussion about Obamas statement and how Joe was right.

Lets mobilize to put the focus where it belongs, on the veracity of Obamas statement about illegals not being covered. Thats a winner for the GOP.

Call your congressperson today and tell them to focus! The key word to spread is LIE not civility.

    I am Joe the Rep.

Funny that you mention “parliamentary”. I’d argue that the U.S. is rather different in this regard. Many other parliaments, and I’m thinking about the UK specifically, are rather noisy and do shout many things at the PM.

Also, we’re probably only looking at this from the perspective of the POTUS address to Congress being a televised event which changes the dynamic. Something tells me that our earlier Presidents had to deal with such shouting. Television broadcast might have been the factor that added the decorum, not the nature of the congress itself.

    Just a guess, though…

The President wants my help! This is what comes of registering on the website when SEIU had their webmeeting with Da One.

I just got this from our President:

    Elm Creek –

I just finished laying out my plan for health reform at a joint session of Congress. Now, I’m writing directly to you because what happens next is critical — and I need your help.

Change this big will not happen because I ask for it. It can only come when the nation demands it. Congress knows where I stand. Now they need to hear from you.

Add your voice: Ask your representatives to support my plan for real health reform in 2009.

The heart of my plan is simple: bring stability and security to Americans who already have health insurance, guarantee affordable coverage for those who don’t, and rein in the cost of health care.

Tonight, I offered a specific plan for how to make it happen. I incorporated the best ideas from Democrats and Republicans to create a plan that’s bold, practical, and represents the broad consensus of the American people.

We’ve come closer to real health reform in the last few months than we have in the last 60 years. But those who profit from the status quo — and those who put partisan advantage above all else — will fight us every inch of the way.

We do not seek that fight, but we will not shrink from it. The stakes are too high to let scare tactics cloud the debate, or to allow partisan bickering to block the path. Your voice, right now, is essential.

See my full plan and call on your representatives to support it:

    http://my.barackobama.com/SupportReform

Ours is not the first generation to understand the dire need for health reform. And I am not the first president to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last.

    Thank you,

    President Barack Obama

I guess I’m who he’s talking about with the reference to “scare tactics” and “partisan bickering.” You see, I don’t believe that he can fund his plan without increasing the deficit or raising taxes, and I have people who understand that the numbers don’t add up.

I also don’t have any faith that any government-run plan can be “self-sustaining” given the mess that Social Security and Medicare are. The United States Postal Service can’t even deliver the mail without constantly asking for rate increases AND cutting services.

The President asks me to contact my representatives to urge them to support his “plan” which is short on details. I’m going to contact them, all right, but it won’t be with the message President Obama wants me to send.

    ECS

I listened to BO last night. It was one of the most appalling exhibits of Hubris that I have ever experienced. All joking aside I would have sworn I was watching Benito Mussolini. The only thing he didn’t do while “chin up micro-nodding” as he looked about, was to cross his arms. I say this not because I detest the man I say it because I am afraid for our great nation and this is what I see.
As for the message, it was an astounding exercise in mis-information and outright lies. How any thinking person can swallow this load of barnyard offal is completely beyond me. I don’t care how “well delivered” it is , if it looks like sheep dung and smells like sheep dung and if you step in it and it sticks and stinks like sheepdung it most probably is sheep dung.

Your mention of the “unless excluded they are included” reminded me of Phantom of the Paradise:

When Winslow is making his contract with Satan, er Swan:

“All articles which have been excluded shall be deemed included”

Wilson apologized for being ‘uncivil.’ He did not take back the substance of what he said.

That is perfectly okay. Apologizing for offending someone or hurting someone’s feelings is always a meaningless apology unless it includes taking back the meaning of what was said.

“I would not have pointed out were an ugly mutt if I had known it would hurt your feelings.”

The shills on The View couldn’t stop talking about how wrong it was for Rep. Wilson to “scream” at President O. during his speech, including Meghan McCain. Amazingly, it was Barbara Walters who pointed out that Dems regularly boo-ed, shouted down, and screamed at President Bush (something Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg conveniently forgot when criticizing Rep. Wilson). While we couldn’t scream at the table, in my Granddaddy’s house and my Daddy’s house growing up, it was at the diner table that we all often had the greatest debates and discussions about politics. Tempers did get heated, sometimes, but if a flat-out lie was told, someone would invariably point it out. Most of the debate was taken up by my Grandfather (a New Deal Democrat) and my Dad (who — to my utter shock and amazement – admitted just a few years ago that he was a registered Democrat), but as we got older, my brother and I would join in, as well as aunts and uncles who happened to be there. Ahhhh, the good old days 8) They’re gone forever!!!!

Rep. Wilson was right to have done what he did. It is when people sit idly by and do nothing and say nothing that evil is able to advance in this world. The fact that President O. was stopped dead in his tracks by Rep. Wilson’s statements, and the utter look of shock and horror on Speaker Pelosi’s face (and, interestingly enough, the Vice-President looked like he could have cared less….in fact, he looked like he’d had too much to drink, but maybe that’s just my view) are enough to let me know that Rep. Wilson was absolutely right. He never should have apologized for anything. Were I in his shoes, I likely would have done the same thing, minus the apology.

He’s going to need it; most reports say his Dem challenger has received between 5-700K, nearly overnight.

If the people in his district are so easily swayed by a Democrat with money then they deserve the representation they’ll get and everything “The One” and the current Congress is going to do to them. The people in the country need to wake up to the fact that if a politician has a “D” beside his name he/she cannot be trusted to follow the Constitution or represent them in Congress. If they have an “R” beside their name then you can trust them just about as far as you can throw them.

Have you ever watch the UK parliament? It is lots more fun. Cat-calls are the norm, not the exception.

    It works for them.
