Unruly moment, manufactured outrage

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 10, 2009 07:44 AM

GOP Rep. Joe Wilson apologized for his outburst last night when he called out one of President Obama’s many lies.

I’ve never seen Nancy Pelosi’s face show so much emotion in my adult lifetime.

The Left is in high dudgeon — never letting a moment of manufactured outrage go to waste.

Sure, members of Congress should leave the heckling to town hall protesters.

But it was Obama who said himself in the speech: “If you misrepresent what’s in the plan, we will call you out.”

That’s what Joe Wilson was doing, wasn’t it?

And that’s what Democrats would undoubtedly tell you they were doing during George W. Bush’s 2005 State of the Union Speech when they booed and shouted down his remarks about the need for Social Security reform. Omri Ceren remembers:

***

Allahpundit, via Twitter: “Joe Wilson’s big mistake: Not saving the ‘liar’ catcall for when The One was pushing his moronic ‘deficit-neutral’ mega-lie.”

Where was the outrage at all the lies Obama was telling? Scolding Congress, actually, but telling them and us things which he, an intelligent man, knows not to be true. So spare me the shock and amazement from the faithful followers when their Messiah is called out. Good grief, even the AP did a fact check and found his remarks, uh, disingenuous, shall we say? (As Rush would say, in Rio Linda that means he lied, truth died.)

How about sending that video of the Congress-critters booing and shouting during W’s address to all the Dems (and RINOs) who are condemning Wilson.

Democrats and Republicans alike are denouncing Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting “You lie” at President Barack Obama during his speech to Congress, an extraordinary breach of decorum for which the South Carolina Republican swiftly apologized.

“There’ll be time enough to consider whether or not we ought to make it clear that that action is unacceptable in the House of Representatives,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., said late Wednesday…when asked about possible punishment for Wilson. “I’ve talked to Republican members who share that view.”

House Republicans did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but there was widespread condemnation of the outburst from members of both parties.

Apparently there are two different sets of rules.

I came across an email factoid that makes one stop and pause. It’s about the Cash for Clunkers program but can you imagine what a government run health care system would look like?

Leaders from the independent aftermarket were among the most vocal against the program, and they continue to be so after the fact. As, CARQUEST’s Pete Kornafel, chairman of the GAAS scholarship committee, writes:

Here’s some math from your stories ballyhooing the fact that the average clunker got 15 mpg and the average replacement gets 25…

    • A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline.
    • A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year.
    • So, an average clunker transaction reduces U.S. gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.
    • The total is about 700,000 vehicles – so that’s 224 million gallons/year.
    • That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.
    • 5 million barrels of oil is about ¼ of one day’s U.S. consumption.
    • And, 5 million barrels of oil costs about $350 million dollars at $75/bbl.
    • So, we all contributed to spending $3 billion to save $350 million.

How good a deal was that???

Talk about an outrageous breach of protocol, not Wilson’s remark … Obama using a joint session to address a PARTISAN ISSUE!

That’s supposed to be used for things like declaring WAR not unconstitutional government ‘health care’ and other such liberal tripe.

The republicans should have all WALKED OUT as Obama walked in. That would have been a MUCH louder message than any outburst from a single Congressman – and one for which there would have been NO APOLOGY REQUIRED.

But what did Harry Reid have to say when he called President Bush a liar in 2007? From the DU: (you gotta love the comments)

“When I have dealings with people, and they tell me one thing and do something else, they’re not telling the truth, what else do you have to call them? I am a person who calls things the way I see them,” Reid said

And what was everyone in the media and elsewhere saying about the “boo-ing” and heckling that the Dems did during the 2005 SOTU address?

TED KOPPEL (ABC host): When the president talked about the bankruptcy of Social Security, there were clearly some Democrats on the floor who thought that that was taking it too far. And they did something that, apparently, no one at this table has ever heard before. They booed. [ABC, Nightline, 2/2/05; Koppel's panel consisted of former Bush adviser Mary Matalin, former Reagan chief of staff Ken Duberstein, and former Clinton speechwriter Michael Waldman]

JOHN ROBERTS (CBS White House correspondent): At a couple points in this address, it looked more like the British Parliament than the United States Congress. I’ve never heard the minority party shout at the president during the State of the Union address. [CBS, post-speech coverage, 2/2/05]

JOE SCARBOROUGH (former U.S. representative (R-FL) and MSNBC host): After the Democrats booed and hissed, Republicans were on the floor saying, you know, we never once did that to Clinton. So every time he would talk about Social Security, the roars got a little louder. And they got behind their president. [MSNBC, Hardball, 2/2/05]

BOB BARR (former U.S. representative (R-GA) and CNN contributor): It will be a very, very difficult battle as we saw by the unprecedented and, I think, highly improper virtual booing of the president when he simply said that the system is going to be bankrupt and the time is now to fix it. [CNN, Inside Politics, 2/3/05]

JOE WATKINS (radio host and CNN substitute host): Did you hear it? Certainly not the polite protocol usually practiced when a president speaks to Congress. If a Democrat one day delivers a State of the Union address, I hope the Republicans won’t lower themselves to such a disrespectful level. I hope last night’s behavior by a few lawmakers doesn’t set a new precedent, that both parties can agree to remain civil, even when voicing disagreements.

    [...]

PAUL BEGALA (CNN host): Let me correct your history — 1993, I was with President Bill Clinton in that House chamber when he addressed a joint session of Congress. And Republicans heckled him when he cited Congressional Budget Office statistics about the deficit. [CNN, Crossfire, 2/3/05]

JOHN GIBSON (FOX News host): Maryanne Marsh, what did you think of those audible jeers, boos, for the president? It sounded a little like the House of Commons: that grumbling that comes from the back-benchers when they don’t like something [British Prime Minister] Tony Blair said. That isn’t very common for state of the union speeches, is it?

MARYANNE MARSH (Democratic strategist): I don’t ever remember hearing it, and was very surprised. But I have to say at least the good news is the Democrats are fighting and they’re on offense. And they’re more united than they’ve ever been against George Bush and the Republicans. [FOX News, The Big Story with John Gibson, 2/3/05]

Yes…it just wouldn’t be the Liberals/Dems/Progressives at all, were it not for their blatant, disgusting hypocrisy.

I only regret that the Congressman apologized, and shame on McCain for demanding it. Of course, we all know what grandpa did with his campaign, so we shouldn’t be surprised. Wouldn’t want to upset his buddies in the Politburo.

I would much prefer to see conservatives rise above it, if for no other reason in deference to the office. He did not appologize for the expression of truth, but a serious breach of decorum. Good for him.

BO is a dirty stinking liar. Will he fine the Gitmo boy scouts if they don’t buy health insurance? No because they are our guests. And how lovely that Eric Holder, who called me a coward for not speaking out on race because I am white (to which I promptly yellow out loud, N*gger! to show my bravery!) giving convicted new black panther racists who were intimidating whites inside a polling area with their “made in Rwanda” clubs a get out of jail gift. Will we have to arm ourselves to vote? Its pretty clear that everyone who is a democrat is a crook or brain dead.

It can be done “civilly” but it still must state EXPLICITLY that what Obama said is not true and then lay out the truth. It must be done nevertheless.

It is okay for President Obama to stand up in Congress and lie his butt off.

Wilson told the truth. Don’t we need more of that?

When are Democrats and RINO’s going to start telling the truth?

Not at the speech? Fine. Why aren’t they telling it now. How about Congresspeople who think Wilson was out of line saying something like:

“Joe Wilson shouldn’t have called Obama a liar while he was giving an address to a joint session of Congress. What Joe said was obviously true, and Obama is a scumbag for lying like that to Congress and the American people, but it was the wrong venue to call him a liar, and Joe Wilson should apologize.”

Now, see, if one of Wilson’s fellow Congresspeople said THAT, I could respect their opinion on the matter, but when they just say Wilson shouldn’t have said what he said but without addressing the TRUTH of what he said and the ARROGANCE of Obama for lying to us like that, then they are just scum and their opinion is TRASH.

For someone representative of the “anti-cowboy” mindset, “We’re callin’ you out!!” sure does sound like something a drunken, belligerent cowboy would say in a saloon – not to a joint session.

It has to be hard to be in Congress these days as a Republican; every day you have to listen to Hope-a-Dope and his minions lying their butts off, and every day you have to come up with novel ways of calling them what they are, like:

    - “Disingenuous”
    - “His math doesn’t add up”
    - “The facts don’t support his claims”
    - “The CBO forecast says otherwise”

    And so on.

Heck, when I watch the so-called “Right-wing echo chamber” also known as FOX News, I spend a lot of time shouting at the screen. The imagination shudders at the prospect of having to endure a D.C. environment that’s all-donkey, all-the-time.
