Senate votes on Johanns amendment to cut off ACORN housing funds; Update: Amendment passes, 83-7

Photoshop credit: Leo Alberti
Just watched GOP Sen. Mike Johanns introduce his amendment on the Senate floor banning federal funds in the current transportation and housing appropriations bill from going to ACORN. Currently, ACORN is eligible to receive millions more in taxpayer funds through mortgage counseling, Community Development Block Grants, and the Neighborhood Stabilization Program — in addition to the tens of millions ACORN Housing Corp. has already received.
The vote is underway right now.
The Johanns Amendment is #2355 to H.R. 3288.
Johanns cited the BigGovernment.com sting videos as evidence that ACORN cannot be trusted with government money:
“Until a full investigation is launched into ACORN, no taxpayer money should be used to fund its activities. A vote in favor of my amendment is a vote in favor of the taxpayer and a vote against the status quo.”
He forgot to add the five most important words:
ACORN is a criminal enterprise.
5:42pm Eastern. Roll call vote still underway. Several Democrats have voted AYE, including Cardin, Carper, Inouye, Johnson (SD), Murray, Tester, Warner, Bingaman, Begich, Nelson (NE), Webb, Landrieu, Bayh, Conrad, Rockefeller, Dodd, Pryor, Hagan, Kohl, Feingold, Boxer, Nelson (FL), Brown, Harkin, Lincoln, Wyden, Baucus, Klobuchar, Kaufman, Shaheen, Lautenberg (switched from no to yes), Menendez, Stabenow, Leiberman, Levin, McCaskill, Reid, Feinstein, Udall, Bennet (CO) Merkley, Cantwell, Dorgan, Schumer…
Durbin was a no. I’ll have the rest soon.
The final roll call vote – amendment passes 83-7. I’ll post the full roll when it’s up on the Senate site.
This is the beginning, not the end.
The Dems are finally, finally on the defensive on ACORN.
Republicans, keep digging and pushing and connecting the dots.

Update: Here are the ignominious ACORN sex ring enablers….
Burris (D-IL)
Casey (D-PA)
Durbin (D-IL)
Gillibrand (D-NY)
Leahy (D-VT)
Sanders (I-VT)
Whitehouse (D-RI)
Full roll call vote here. 9 not voting…
Burr (R-NC)
Byrd (D-WV)
Coburn (R-OK)
Graham (R-SC)
Gregg (R-NH)
Hutchison (R-TX)
McCain (R-AZ)
Mikulski (D-MD)
Vitter (R-LA)
***
Here’s a reminder of why McCain is such a flakeout on ACORN: REMEMBER?
Update: Several readers note that McCain and Graham were at a town hall event in S.C. at the Citadel earlier today. Still doesn’t excuse McCain’s alliance with ACORN on open borders. Also, the town hall was at 9am. Not clear whether they were already back in D.C. or not by the time the amendment hit the Senate floor after 5pm Eastern earlier this evening.

Why is a US Senator amending a House of Representatives bill?
It’s the transportation appropriations bill.
We need to watch closely who votes in favor of that ACORN scum.
I emailed my senators earlier today, urging them to vote “yes” on SA2355.
But, since they’re both (D), I’m not holding my breath.
I’ve seen this movie before:
Watching on CSPAN2.
Feinstein just voted “AYE!”
Let’s all hope that the pressure we have been applying to our elected officials regarding all of the wastefulness sinks in enough to get this passed. Afterall, we are about to enter the next election season and members of both party’s have their a$$’s on the line. Everyone, keep pushing and get this crimminal enterprise shut down and those at the top of ACORN get life plus 10.
I’d be very surprised if ACORN becomes defunded in any way before the mid-term elections. The Dems are beholden to ACORN and will spare no amount of political capital to protect it.
This is beginning to sound like titles to network sitcoms.
“The one about New York”
“The one about Baltimore”
I’m waiting for “The one about Chicago” followed by “Death becomes ACORN”.
Well, paint me green and call me Gumby.
Must be close to an election year.
The Dems can safely vote AYE. Acorn has hundreds of affiliated crime syndicates and unless the language of the bill includes them in some manner, I doubt this will actually do much to de-fund their criminal activities.
Schumer voted Aye. Wow.
Play ACORN off, keyboard cat.
OMG!
BOTH CA Senators voted to de-fund ACORN?
Folks are ice skating in Gehennah as we type!
Whooo Hooo! It passed!
Glad to see Durbin and Burris are doing such a good job representing their own corrupt interests. I really have to move. Ugh. Happy the amendment passed though. See all those Dems that voted for it? They can be frightened. They can be forced. They work for us not the other way around. Keep using your power people to free up this country.
Woot!
Agree with that. After all, this is the United States Congress. I smell a dog and pony show.
Once we skewer ACORN, we need to follow up by destroying SEIU.
Guess phone service in Gehennah isn’t so good, ’cause Kennedy didn’t call in a NAY vote.
So who are the other 9 that didn’t vote at all?
I actually got goosebumps watching the vote on C-SPAN2. This is the most optimistic I’ve felt since January 20th. I just hope this little act of CYA doesn’t let Dodd and the other clowns off the hook next year.
How many more dots need to be connected before we can start talking impeachment?
Will the MSM cover the ACORN story now?
MM, we really do surround them. Let’s keep this giant awake for a few more years!
Hey, does anybody know if this would also stop stimulus money from going to ACORN?
Good question, since one of the perennial “present” voters is presently occupying the White House.
Wish we knew how to destroy SEIU. I’d be right behind ya. But this is a great first step in ending ACORN.
I’m as giddy as a little school girl with this news! A lot of this is because of the tapes, but I think what pushed them to vote for the amendment is the little party in front of the Capitol on Saturday. The giant is wide awake and they know it now!
Hopefully the AFL/CIO and SEIU are next.
After that, the bankers.
All them senators been watching FOX news? Reading Michelle’s blog? How did they learn about obamacorn?
Anybody ever think, someone ought to read these bills that spend billions and figure out where the money goes?
ACORN is a criminal enterprise, and it will morph to something else and continue on.
It’s amazing how many average Americans remain unaware of the countless ties that bind ACORN, SEIU, The Center for American Progress, the Apollo Alliance, and Barack Obama.
Klobuchar voted “Yes”? That’s kinda amazing – our Minn lefties won’t like that, haha!
Waiting to hear on Franken’s vote – an “AYE” from him would be a shocker.
What were you doing at 20 and 25???
WAY TO GO HANNAH AND JAMES!
Wow. I can’t believe the CO Senators both voted no. Shocked I tell ya, shocked.
Serving in the Air Force (with Jimmy Carter as CIC for part of it), and drinking a lot.
Nothing as glorious as these two brave soldiers.
Carry on Hannah and James, we’ve got your back.
Really, people, what choice did they have after those videos hit FOX and the internet? If they had voted “No!” en masse the next gathering in D.C. would have been people heating tar, stacking rails, and tearing open feather pillows.
I can see Britt Hume asking, “Senator Dodd, how could you vote to continue funding ACORN Housing after the two videotapes showing their employees promulgating criminal activities in their offices as part of their duties? Don’t you find it strange that in two separate locations the actions were pretty much the same, despite ACORN’s denials?”
ECS
I think that I should report BigGovernment.com as a very ‘fishy’ organization.
My patriotic duty to OUR LEADER.

Thank you for your service!
There are several amendments here:
I am gladly mistaken…
If the Transportation/HUD Funding Bill with the Johanns Amendment in “tact” reaches the White House desk, it will STILL needs the POTUSA’s signature before ACORN and it criminal enterprises are “cut off” from the government “cash cow”. In the meantime, ACORN is scheduled to receive scheduled distributions of funds and they have applied for more grants, already! I am not holding my breath for ACORN to dissolve their activities anytime soon. I am sure their well-paid lawyers and far-left supporters (Soros & Company) will continue to supply money to keep ACORN in business for a long time! Am I skeptical? Yes, and much more than that! Aren’t you? jb
Why did the DEMOCRAT Senators vote YES? They saw the 2+ Million Americans March on Washington DC this weekend. Clearly knowing the tide is turning against Obama’s destructive agenda. Their lying Eyes saw Aye.
As we speak, the minions of liberalism are busy changing the names and addresses. The Hydra lives, don’t let up.
Can’t wait to see the President have to sign this (or commit further political suicide and veto it).
“Former ACORN Lawyer Signs Bill Defunding Organization” sounds like a great headline.
Perhaps the President will recuse himself due to conflict of interest and “attorney-client privilege”!
Boxer and Feinstein?
I’m shocked……and stunned.
ACORN has letters for their attorney posted on it’s site:
letter one
letter two
They need to call a “cleaner”, not a lawyer.
Is this a great week or what! And it’s only Monday!
Roll now up
The Nays – Burris (shock, SHOCK), Casey, Durbin, Gillibrand, Leahy, Sanders, Whitehouse
The No-Shows – Burr, Byrd, Coburn, Graham, Gregg, Hutchison, McCain (again, I’m shocked, SHOCKED), Mikulski, Vitter
Does this resolution include the billions ACORN was awarded via Obama’s non-stimulus?
Before we break out the good champagne, I have to remind you that all ACORN needs to do to avoid this amendment is change its name. Here is the full text of the amendment (via the Congressional Record, p. S9298):
Does that mean Franken voted AYE?
Another one that was put into office by ACORN?
Oh, wow, he will not be re-elected now.
He just bit off the hand that fed him.
/humor off
Well I guess this dog does hunt — go after ACORN and all its manifestations, leave no stone unturned. Track it and its associations all the way to the top.
Good!
ACORN, hopefully, won’t steal the next election.
Wait…do you mean John Kerry actually voted for the amendment? He actually voted?
Little dick durbin of course voted no.
He and his Daley led Chicago machine helped invent the criminal enterprise known as the nut brigade ACORN
Lets hope so. We have pounded, pounded, pounded and they have not listened. We marched a million men and a million women and they are starting to get the picture. However, Obama is out making speeches every day about passing his health care reform now. He is not listening. He has a one focus mind here. Do it, at all costs.
He may have actually jumped into the water before checking how deep it is. I think he is now caught bewtween a rock and a hard place. He has put a lot of political capital into this loser of a bill and he is in to deep to get out. He is pulling out all the stops because if it fails, he will lose a lot of political capital. Enough to hurt him.
I think it’s a little more complex than that.
Not that I trust any of them, nor their associates/allies. But don’t go imagining it’s that easy to get around this. It might happen, but it would take time.
And if they’re prosecuted under the RICO statue, they’re not going to be doing much of anything except lawyering up.
we must never let our guard down ever…
now let’s move to full FBI/Senate investigations into them at all levels and all of their tangled webs….
ACORN the nut brigade is more than just the housing side
The vote fraud part of this criminal enterprise is the big problem.
However take the victory and smile
Now back to work
Great news!
My thanks to Hannah and James for exposing these crooks and racists. Many thanks, too, Michelle for shining the light on ACORN.
Burris won’t be running in 2012 because he got a little too close to the scandals of Gov. “testicular fortitude.” If the GOP can run a decent not totally Rino candidate we might have a shot.
Durbin will be another Robert Byrd.
Wow. Another small victory for the VRWC, which seems to be happening with increasing frequency of late. The new media is making progress. Strangely enough the MSM completely missed the story again due to other pressing issues like MO’s incredible sense of style.
I’m not sure this is the best time to point out that we ususally support reading the bills before they vote
Unfortunately, this is a political gesture and won’t mean a lot. ACORN needs to be taken DOWN…all.the.way.down. Not just certain parts of it.
It is a start, however, and we need to start somewhere.
A detailed investigation needs to be performed on the housing loans and housing assistance that were a result of the fraudulent activities of Acorn.
The loans and subsidies are sourced from other finances, not the meager amount received for the ‘housing assistance’ funds Acorn received.
It appears that these funds paid for the operation of the ‘assistance’, not the loans and subsidies.
I hope some one can look into this.
Another victory for conservatives, and frankly Americans in general, against Obama and his corrupt group ACORN. Now THAT’S the kind of change we’re looking for….
Don’t worry your little heads, folks. Nancy and her crew will kill it in the House.
*They need to be defunded completely, as well as all the others addicted to OPM(other peoples money) in D.C.; We have to keep the heat on high and constant over the next few months for any of them to get religion; And don’t get too hopped up on most in the GOP to be of much help as they and the Dems are pretty much two sides of the same coin; DeMint, Pence, Blackburn and a few others are the exceptions.
*Thanks to James, Hannah, and Andrew B.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A no vote here is just as bad a a yes vote. These twits cannot even be bothered to stop funding crime in this country. I can’t do anything about the pathetic enablers McCain and Graham, but Hutchison you are so DONE for ANY office, Senate or the current sparkle in your eye Governor of TX. Dems aren’t going to vote for you, and you’ve so alienated conservatives. You are DONE.
To be fair, McCain and Graham were otherwise occupied. I will have to give them a pass on this one (FOX covered their session today).
Please explain, what job took precedent over them representing the folks in their states?
Hannah and another person (didn’t catch their name), announced on Hannity that something “Big” related to Acorn will will be released tomorrow.
GREAT!
THIS is what happens when ordinary Americans start fighting against the establishment, known as Congress and the current administration. I think we should all send Beck an email thanking him, as well as Michelle, for keeping an eye on ACORN and reporting the truth! Let’s keep it up, people!!
PS Donation to GOP Sen. Mike Johanns’ next campaign is on my books.
Juan McAmnesty
Lindsey Ghramnisty
These two bastard RINOS should not EVER be elected again… what a crock these two are… God… what total losers.
HOW do they represent US!
Explaining their positions on the health care issue and the Afghanistan war. At least these were the topics of the piece I caught. I do not know the group they were speaking too, but it appeared to be a small auditorium.
I didn’t say I agreed with them not being there. However, they appeared to be busy addressing the current issues that the country is divided over.
My point was that they were not ‘avoiding’ voting, as this appeared to be a scheduled event, whereas the bill presented today was not.
They are being funneled money from a variety of sources.
If money was being made from prostitution, graft, and other illegal trades, then I would think the IRS would swoop down.
The same racketeering laws used to prosecute other fraud operators and the Mafia should be used against ACorn.
‘Reaching across the isle’ means “turncoat” to me in today’s political environment.
How about simple defrauding the American People by fraudulent use of Taxpayer’s money. That should be enough, let alone all the fraudulent tax paper work and housing benefit applications that this organization used taxpayer money to assist with.
But didn’t lgm and Rest Stop Septic swear to us that ACORN was innocent and all the charges were trumped up right-wing smears.
There lies the reason for the dem vote in the Senate…Acorn has too many affiliates/alias’s to get white washed by this bill.
Acorn is being paid money to ‘assist’ people in filling out their tax forms and paperwork to qualify for low interest housing loans and even free houses.
By assisting people to defraud our government out of taxpayer money, while being paid taxpayer money to do it is horrendous!
Thye had the Audacity to commit such crimes and Hope that they wouldn’t be caught. Remember…Obama will take care of everything…he is on their side and protecting them.
Thanks for reminding me why I can’t stand McCain. Palin was the reason I got on board with the ticket. What a loser.
I would make a guess that holds true for most who voted on that ticket.
Does anybody think these few incidents are what prompted this vote? My guess is that soon there will be much more evidence of widespread corruption involving senators and congressmen nationwide coming to light as the few attorneys general with honor and decency begin to investigate, and this vote was an attempt to throw a shoe into the gears. Bipartisan heads are about to roll.
Yes indeed. Palin on the ticket made voting for McAmnesty palatable.
I would wager that this is the very bottom of a huge mountain of corruption involving the Banks, Fannie, Freddy and many politicians.
Thank God Alan Keyes was available, so that I wouldn’t have had to write in my own name for president.
RWR

No Kay is OK by me.
We don’t need someone infected with Washingtonitis running for Governor of Texas.
Voting for that freak Alan Keys had the same effect as writing in “The Lizard People”(Green Party) in the 08 election. In other words, it helped Obama become the next president. Voting for a third party in what is in all reality a two party election is as helpful to the conservative cause as being a one legged man in a a** kicking contest.
Thanks, thanks a lot.

They seemed to jump on this way too quickly, which makes me concur. What else are they aware of and hiding?
Can you smell the fear? Imagine what is going on in the White House….
Pressing this issue is going to create a schism between the Socialist thugs and the career Democrats trying to save their political perks. The closer this gets to the White House the more toxic The One will become.
I agree with those who have written that 9/12 helped shape this vote.
True, but I think Obama’s feelings right now are like General Garrison the commander in Somalia in 1992, who said in “Blackhawk Down” when the first Blackhawk helicopter went down, “We just lost the initiative.”
We are transitioning from defense to offense.
i have to agree about Keyes. If Raushenberger had been put on the ticket after Ryan dropped out then we might have avoided getting “senator” obama
Keyes was put on the ticket because the state GOP wanted a black guy to run against a black guy(I voted for Keyes in the 2000 primaries) and we see where that got us.
Keyes performance in 2006 makes it that I’ll write in Yacko, Wacko, and Dot before I write in Keyes.
ACORN = Help Criminals/Illegals get Free Houses that the taxpayer is paying for.
They were helping a person they thought was a criminal making $96,000.00 to cheat on the paperwork to qualify for a free house! How many hard working, law abiding citizens can’t afford a house, let alone make 100K a year and still can’t qualify for a free house. But go to ACORN, tell them you are ‘one of them’ (a criminal) and WOW, the free house is yours!
What a week. And getting better knowing that there are more O’Keefe ACORN episodes on the way. So sweet.
ACORN affirmative action child prostitution pimp entitlement episode 4 in 3…2…1…
Simply put, I do see a racial component to this, and I’m pround to have the honesty to say so. These scum are the dregs of society, the worst aspect of America. And the President tells us to aspire to their level in his commencement speeches. No wonder parents don’t want the King of the Dregs spreading his message to school children.
ACORN can deny it all they want, but the similarities on what they advise in multiple locations makes their explanation impossible to believe.
Not to worry. The House passed a bill that doesn’t restrict funding to acorn.
So I’m sure these crooks will find a way to agree on funding acorn.
The Senate resolution is just a show.
Then it becomes incumbant for conservatives to to take full control of one party or another, does it not?
