ACORN Watch: Charlie Gibson and the ostrich media; Update: Audio added
Several Chicago readers and Twitterers report that ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson told WLS-AM Chicago talk show hosts Don Wade and Roma this morning that the reason he hasn’t covered the ACORN scandal is that he didn’t know about it.
Reader Patrick M. e-mails:
While listening to Don Wade and Roma this morning on WLS AM Chicago, they had Charlie Gibson on as their usual Tuesday morning guest. Don asked Charlie, why, after the senate last night voted to halt funding to ACORN and after three of those video tapes of ACORN employees helping the pimp and prostitute set up shop, there was no mention of it anywhere on the network news. Charlie gave out a most uncomfortable laugh and said that that was the first he heard of it!
Don and Roma pointed out that ABC’s Jake Tapper reported on the Census Bureau’s decision to drop ACORN from its data collection partnerships on Friday as a result of BigGovernment.com’s video stings.
Gibson also admitted to Don and Roma that he didn’t know about the Senate vote to de-fund ACORN.
Gibson’s got his head in the sand. So typical of the ostrich media.

Don: Okay, here’s my news question. A Senate bill yesterday passes, cutting off funds to this group called ACORN. Now, we got that bill passed and we have the embarrassing video of ACORN staffers giving tax advice on how to set up a brothel with 13-year-old hookers. It has everything you could want – corruption and sleazy action at tax-funded organizations and it’s got government ties. But nobody’s covering that story. Why?
Gibson: HAHAHAHAHA. HEHEHE. I didn’t even know about it. Um. So, you’ve got me at a loss. I don’t know. Uh. Uh. But my goodness, if it’s got everything including sleaziness in it, we should talk about it this morning.
Roma: This is the American way!
Gibson: Or maybe this is just one you leave to the cables.
Roma: Well, I think this is a huge issue because there’s so much funding that goes into this organization…
Gibson: I know we’ve done some stories about ACORN before, but this one I don’t know about…
Roma: Jake Tapper did some blogging on it. I know he’s blogged at least once on this scandal.
Gibson: You guys are uh really up on the website.

Charles Gibson and the rest of the media HAVE NO CHOICE but to do what they are doing. There is an old saying, “You have to pick the hill you want to die on.”
The media will bitterly contest this story in order to kill it or “die on the hill” trying. They have no choice, because they know where this story leads……….to the front door of the White House.
The Democrats in Congress, the RNC, the NEA, the AFL-CIO, SEIU, and Organizing for America all have strong links to ACORN. David Axelrod sent e-mails from the White House to people who NEVER had emailed they White House. Just where do you think he got them? Of course they are exchanging data and information, as well as cooperating fully.
Obama was a lawyer and community organizer for ACORN. You know intuitively, he still have links to them. They helped him gain the White House. Logically things will be coordinated through the White House.
If properly investigated, this will make Watergate look like a parking violation. People like Charles Gibson are FULLY AWARE of that. They can’t let this story be taken to its logical conclusion.

Gibson shot himself in the foot. He should simply have shut up. Now he has firmly established himself the media benchmark for anchormen keeping abreast of current events.
Maybe he should visit this blog more often instead of watching ABC News…

I agree. I’ve said many times that the worst thing that could happen would be for this site to turn into an echo chamber. However, disagreement can be done with taking ad hominem shots at our host.

That should go down with other iconic statements such as “the dog ate my homework” (aka the NYT non- Van Jones coverage excuse),” the check is in the mail” and “I was only following orders”.
Hey, John B. John Deaux’s been around here for a while. I can say without a doubt that it’s not the dissenting opinion to which he’s referring.
He’s questioning why posters who very deliberately and intentionally launch ad hominem attacks on Michelle because they don’t like her point of view should be allowed the continued courtesy of being able to post their bile.
If they have a different opinion or view, that’s fine. Finding it necessary to include the insult (which undermines any contrary view they may be presenting) is not.
I don’t believe RSS is always like this, but he does get grumpy from time to time. There are others here who don’t even bother to express a different view, they just react in knee-jerk fashion to anything that might resemble an attack on statism or the leaders that endorse it.
That said, Michelle’s tolerance is very high. As you say, that is commendable. That doesn’t mean that we have to like those that slam her continuously while enjoying the privilege she gives them in posting on her site. It’s just poor manners on their part.

I’m not buying Charlie’s faux ignorance for a minute. It’s just his/ABC’s pathetic excuse for not practicing honest journalism.
If these guys are going to report the news, the first thing they must do is know what is happening. If I were ABC News, I would have serious concerns about this man’s competence for his job.
Even if he hadn’t gotten wind of it any other way, you would think he could be checking out the competition to see what they were covering!

I think Legacy media is quite descriptive of what these news organizations are.
‘Legacy media’ is old, with entrenched and soon becoming obsolete journalistic rules, unable to be ‘retooled’ into something lean and truthful.
‘Legacy’ media’, in order to become mainstream once again must be shut down and a totally new organization with new rules built in it’s place.

As for the has been Charlie Gibson and the alleged mainstream media, well, I haven’t paid them much attention since Sam Donaldson use to yell at President Reagan at press conferences. Leaving profanity aside, what would be a good way to refer to them? I’m not sure at this point what to call them but I’m beginning to think they may no longer deserve First Amendment rights as they no longer function as a protector of We the People, the press actually promotes the democrat view these days. That is dangerous. We conservatives should continue to point out their bias, mock their sanctimony and ignore their sponsors.
I have it, a name, the Indentured Press. Indentured to serve only democrats.

I read an article sometime in the last few days about ACORN and Cloward-Piven and have previously read something about Obama and Cloward-Piven. Today I was thinking that the real mastermind behind the Cloward-Piven strategy is George Soros. With all the Left wing organizations that he funds, all of which seem to have the same goals of draining the Treasury, sowing discontent, agitating for increased spending and government control, he must be purposely trying to take down the US.
I’m supportive of 1st Amendment rights and the right to petition the government but can what Soros is up to really be classified as a citizen merely trying to influence his government? Or is he up to something more sinister that can only be defined as war? I believe he is an enemy of the American people and our free republic.
The conservative movement has momentum with the whole ACORN thing so I think now is the time to go after Soros and his entire web of sappers.
