ACORN Watch: Charlie Gibson and the ostrich media; Update: Audio added

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 15, 2009 09:52 AM

Several Chicago readers and Twitterers report that ABC News anchor Charlie Gibson told WLS-AM Chicago talk show hosts Don Wade and Roma this morning that the reason he hasn’t covered the ACORN scandal is that he didn’t know about it.

Reader Patrick M. e-mails:

While listening to Don Wade and Roma this morning on WLS AM Chicago, they had Charlie Gibson on as their usual Tuesday morning guest. Don asked Charlie, why, after the senate last night voted to halt funding to ACORN and after three of those video tapes of ACORN employees helping the pimp and prostitute set up shop, there was no mention of it anywhere on the network news. Charlie gave out a most uncomfortable laugh and said that that was the first he heard of it!

Don and Roma pointed out that ABC’s Jake Tapper reported on the Census Bureau’s decision to drop ACORN from its data collection partnerships on Friday as a result of BigGovernment.com’s video stings.

Gibson also admitted to Don and Roma that he didn’t know about the Senate vote to de-fund ACORN.

Gibson’s got his head in the sand. So typical of the ostrich media.

***

Bernie Goldberg’s looking for new names for the “mainstream media.” I’m pitching ostrich media. How about you?

***

Update: Courtesy of Don and Roma and WLS, here is the audio clip of Gibson. His laugh is really something. Reminded me of Barney Rubble. My favorite comment from Gibson? When he snarks that “Maybe that’s just one you leave to the cables.”

Here’s a transcript:

Don: Okay, here’s my news question. A Senate bill yesterday passes, cutting off funds to this group called ACORN. Now, we got that bill passed and we have the embarrassing video of ACORN staffers giving tax advice on how to set up a brothel with 13-year-old hookers. It has everything you could want – corruption and sleazy action at tax-funded organizations and it’s got government ties. But nobody’s covering that story. Why?

Gibson: HAHAHAHAHA. HEHEHE. I didn’t even know about it. Um. So, you’ve got me at a loss. I don’t know. Uh. Uh. But my goodness, if it’s got everything including sleaziness in it, we should talk about it this morning.

Roma: This is the American way!

Gibson: Or maybe this is just one you leave to the cables.

Roma: Well, I think this is a huge issue because there’s so much funding that goes into this organization…

Gibson: I know we’ve done some stories about ACORN before, but this one I don’t know about…

Roma: Jake Tapper did some blogging on it. I know he’s blogged at least once on this scandal.

Gibson: You guys are uh really up on the website.

    tre,

Thanks. We are blessed so I am in no hurry to get a job. Been working all of my life and this is the first break I have had.

I feel bad for the kids – all of our kids. Imagine having to take work at $8/hour just to pay bills and still not have the ability to make it.

We saved so we are doing okay. Pray I have a great break! ;)

I noticed NBC is not doing a daily running body count during the war while O-Dopey is in office as well. Can’t make our Theif CIC look bad now can we? (Like he needs NBC’s help)

I would stay away from the animal references. As ConservativesRus said, ostriches do not put their head in the sand (how would they breathe?).

If you use lemmings, people may continue believing the myth that lemmings commit mass suicide (Disney doctored that movie).

    I like “State Run Media.”

soap, sorry to hear about the layoff.

My husband has been out of work for almost a year now, and the market isn’t very friendly right now (especially given his age – just under a year shy of SS eligibility). We’re hoping to hang on until he can file.

I hope you have better fortune – after a well deserved break. ;-)

Remembering a favorite Far Side cartoon: dinosaurs in a meeting, one says something like “The ice sheet is advancing, the mammals are gaining ascendency and here we are with brains the size of a pea”

    Maybe the Dinosaur Media fits.

HI JOHN DEAUX–I think I have the answer to your question WHY DOESN’T MICHELLE MAKLIN BAN DISAGREEABLE POSTERS.
    ***
There are always two (or more!) sides to most issues. Sometimes the poster’s comments are valid concerns stated by rational people. At other times it is CRAZY WACKO stuff.
    ***
Good journalism is fair to both sides–and MM is a fair journalist. Her documentation and proof skills are excellent. And she isn’t dumb–letting a fool vent shows them up for poor thinking and a lack of basic “smarts” and civility.
    ***
Like the old West adage said, “Give them enough rope and they will end up hanging themselves!” Or like the Bible (paraphrase) says–better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a wise person–instead of speaking stupidly and confirming that you are a fool.

Charles Gibson and the rest of the media HAVE NO CHOICE but to do what they are doing. There is an old saying, “You have to pick the hill you want to die on.”

The media will bitterly contest this story in order to kill it or “die on the hill” trying. They have no choice, because they know where this story leads……….to the front door of the White House.

The Democrats in Congress, the RNC, the NEA, the AFL-CIO, SEIU, and Organizing for America all have strong links to ACORN. David Axelrod sent e-mails from the White House to people who NEVER had emailed they White House. Just where do you think he got them? Of course they are exchanging data and information, as well as cooperating fully.

Obama was a lawyer and community organizer for ACORN. You know intuitively, he still have links to them. They helped him gain the White House. Logically things will be coordinated through the White House.

If properly investigated, this will make Watergate look like a parking violation. People like Charles Gibson are FULLY AWARE of that. They can’t let this story be taken to its logical conclusion.
