RSS: Are you saying the Wright brothers were Southerners?

What fantasy world has the Wright family being from a Southern state? Wilbur Wright was born near Millville, Indiana in 1867; Orville in Dayton, Ohio in 1871. They lived in Ohio most of their adult lives. No way could they be called Southerners!

Although they did first achieve powered flight in the south (Kitty Hawk, NC) and they set up the military’s first flying school in the south (Montgomery, AL), it is foolish to consider them Southerners.

Yep, because the best way to discourage partisan division is to have a partisan split vote chastising behavior on only one side of the aisle.

…because they believe the American public can’t see right through that little waste of time and money.

I’ll tell you what Obama has succeeded in doing, and that’s to take all the sting out of the term racist. If it has no meaning other than that applied by these airheads, who can object to being called racist? If words have meaning, they must be applied correctly, and trying to shroud (cloak, sheet) all criticism of Obama’s statist policies as racism effectively makes that charge meaningless.

rss, you obviously know very little about the civil war. probably due to your public school education. look at the facts of the civil wars start. new england christian do gooders flocked to kansas to assure it was a “free” state. reminds me of todays libs crossing the country voting in contended states. they then proceeded to go into missouri and steal slaves and move them north. the missouri folks got mad and burned lawrence to the ground, because lawrence was the center of the new england carpetbaggers enclave. but the war was about economics, not slaves. it was about new england cotton mills and tobacco factories needing the bounty of the south. was new england ever an agricultural area? the south wanted to sell it’s products to england, hence the blockade of charleston and new orleans. those fine nonracist new yorkers had a huge riot in new york because they wouldn’t go fight for those southern negroes. in the south they call the civil war the war of northern aggression. democrats from new england have a very ugly history during that time and the decades after, which is why we have the outlaws of the 1870 and 80’s cole younger, jesse james etc, were all southern soldiers whose property and livelihoods were stolen during the war.

All right. My paternal ancestors lived in South Carolina, did not own slaves, and fought for the Confederacy. They did not fight to preserve slavery but to preserve the rights of states to control their own internal processes, and because they were South Carolinians and, to their minds, the state, their friends, and their family were endangered by the Federal Government.

Misguided? Maybe, considering the current intrusion of the Federal Government into state and local jurisdictions. Dishonorable? Hardly.

I’m not going to address the person who posted the comment about Joe Wilson’s defense of the Confederacy. I am going to make a comment that, as far as my own knowledge of history is concerned, is a fair statement.

For starters, we were lied to in school when we were taught that the American Civil War was fought over slavery. Yes, that was a part of the debate – a considerable part of it.

But the primary reason the southern states seceded from the Union was the issue of states rights.

I could go on at length about the ways in which our beloved Abraham Lincoln trod on the Constitution – and please understand, if he had not, the United States might not exist. Nor, might I add, would the Confederacy. European powers were watching eagerly for the least sign of weakness in the still young country that is our home. The European empires were still looking to acquire more and more territory, and the riches of the North American continent were more than enough enticement for them to want to see the dissolution of the Union.

Therefore I am of the opinion that he was right to act as he did, for the preservation of the country. As he said, quoting/paraphrasing Scripture, a house divided against itself cannot stand.

As a New Englander, from a long line that traces back to before the founding of this country, I can understand how it is that many persons of Southern heritage still view the conflict between the states as a battle for the Constitutionally guaranteed rights of the states vs the federal government. So I’m not going to assume that Joe Wilson wishes for a return to slavery just because he defends the Confederate flag.

    Nor should anyone else.

What they didn’t count on was the majority of Americans catching on and refusing to allow political correctness to intimidate us!! Unfortunately, the race/ideology war is officially on and there doesn’t seem to be any way to stop it. God help us because they have the black panthers and the unions, and those folks play rough.

Yes, I’ve read much along the same lines. Newspaper editors were scathing in their criticisms of Lincoln (he was, in their opinion, stupid, ignorant, etc., etc.). The contemporary commentary on his now immortal Gettysburg address was mainly on how disappointing it was (and short – for which countless schoolchildren, tasked with memorizing it, have been grateful) ;-)

RSS was right to note that the level of discourse in the modern day Congress is more civil than it often was back in, oh, say Andrew Jackson’s day. IIRC there was a beating with a cane/walking stick that occurred within the hallowed hall of Congress.

Hope-a-Dope rode the racial spoils gravy-train all the way to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but that’s the end of the line. And everyone stupid enough to have thought that this would make any difference in race relations now has a choice:

    - Admit that they got snookered into believing a fairy tale; or

But 12 Democrats voted no on the resolution: Michael Arcuri of New York, Bill Delahunt of Massachusetts, Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, Maurice Hinchey of New York, Paul Hodes of New Hampshire, Dennis Kucinich of Ohio, Dan Maffei of New York, Eric Massa of New York, James McDermott of Washington, Gwen Moore of Wisconsin, Gene Taylor of Mississippi and Harry Teague of New Mexico.
