Another pipeline closed off: House cuts ACORN funding, 345-75
Better late than never:
The US House today joined the Senate in voting to defund ACORN, the community advocacy group beset by allegations of voter registration fraud and videotapes apparently showing employees advising conservative activists posing as a prostitute and pimp how to break the law.
The measure, offered as part of a motion on a student loan bill, passed by a vote of 345-75, according to the office of House Republican leader John Boehner.
The Senate voted earlier this week to withdraw housing and urban development funding. Last week, the Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN, which on Wednesday said it is suspending accepting new clients during an investigation.
But congressional Republicans are calling for all federal funds to be cut off and for a Justice Department investigation.
Just the beginning. Far from the end.

Here is my question. Given the number of incidents that are now documented regarding ACORN and child prostitution (I don’t know how to put it delicately), it is clear that such activity is a part, possibly a large part of the ACORN enterprise. Moreover, it is highly likely that this sort of thing has been going on for sometime, possibly years. Therefore, it would have been highly unlikely for the highest levels of the Democrat party (since almost by definition they are the prime recipient of ACORN’s activities) not to be aware of A) what was happening and B) given their awareness, made little or no effort to stop it.
I am therefore asking: what did Obama know and when did he know it?
Key thing to check, have the House and Senate defunded the same thing? I would not put it past the nitwits to cover their tracks by pretending to do something when in reality they weren’t. But given all the GOP votes in favor of defunding (presumed racists), this must be the real deal. Or?
Would like to know why the freshman rep from Northenr VA, did not vote.

For any ACORN entity with 501(c)(3) status, revoke it! That should discourage individual donors who get a deduction only for contributions to 501(c)(3) charities (public charities), and it should foreclose foundation grants because, I think, they get penalized for making grants to nonqualifying entities.

My personal theory as to why Barney Frank didn’t vote on this is because his boyfriend once got pimp advice from ACORN and voting on this measure would have been considered a “conflict of interest” in Frank’s eyes — he was just being a responsible public servant by skipping the vote.

Still hoping the ACORN nuts file suit against Brietbart, O’keefe and Giles. In the discovery phase, they can/will demand ACORN disclose internal records, disbursements, communications etc. That’s when the real fireworks can start.
There is a concept called “relevance” in asking for document production. Why would you think any of the documents you want would have any bearing on any civil case they may have against the filmmakers or the people that distributed it?

The besy thing about ACORN’s problems is that you just know that they are lobbying intensely on their top level sponsors to save them thus the “fear of political violence” and public distancing and not voting. I don’t think this is the basis of the potential suit. I think it is the (alleged) illegal filming and the subsequent rebroadcasting.
Fine – this takes care of direct funding, but what about all the money ACORN gets from federal block grants that get passed through the states?

My Congress-Weasel Richard Neal voted “No”. I called his office in DC to ask for his reasoning. They put me on hold for about 2 minutes then came back and said they did not know as the vote just happened.
Told them I was going to send a large contribution to his competitor in the 2010 election.
Probably a waste of my time but perhaps the cumulative effect of these calls and Tea Parties, etc. starts to make a diference.

I know their lawyer sent a letter to Fox and Breitbart. I have not been able to locate that. But even if it were a case of slander or defamation, the claim would be that the videos were somehow edited or manipulated to distort the truth of the meetings. And as such, the only relevant evidence for or against would be the authenticity of the tapes.
I would not be surprised at all. I would also not be surprised to see a small fine as the punishment against the filmmakers, not against Fox or Breitbart.
Hmm there are names missing from that vote count, because 345 + 75 + 2 + 11 = 433 and there is 435 in the House, so who are missing 2?
The reason I mention this is I noticed Queen Pelosi is left off that list, which means she was not in the chamber when this vote took place. Where was she??? This is just a fact I think many missed when reporting about this vote.
But chap the filmmakers and Fox could request application data to check against criminal records for history of pimping/prostitution.
Not to mention if any houses purchased through ACORN have been listed by Law Enforcement as drug houses/ areas of prostition.
Why would you think that? What do you think the cause of action against the filmmakers, etc…would be? Any evidence has to be relevant to that cause of action.

Chap these are all claimed to occur on the tapes. The defendants would be able to go after all that to show a pattern of illegal behavior to reinforce the authenticity of the tapes.

IF, and this is a big if, ACORN were to try to sue for slander, it would be on the basis that they purposely distorted the tapes to make it falsely appear the employees were saying the things they were. The only evidence relevant to that is the footage itself. The filmmakers would have to do is produce the raw footage and maybe both sides would throw in an expert or two on film editing.
I still don’t believe the basis of any suit would be slander. I have listened to the CEO of ACORN on three different interviews, and each time she has said they are suing based on the illegal taping in some states.

As I said, it is actually very common because the Speaker traditionally doesn’t vote at all unless his/her vote could be decisive.

I heard this story on the radio this afternoon while driving on the Northern State Parkway in Nassau County, NY. I saw a bumper sticker on a Ford Crown Vic that said “Pete King for Congress”. I looked at the license plate and it said “US Congress”. I passed the car slowly (traffic jam) and it was Pete King himself. This was at about 5:15 PM EDT. I guess Mr. King was not in DC for the ACORN vote. Absentee ballot? Who knows the rules? Anyone out there?

It truly is not cowardly at all it is procedural. Pelosi has not voted in even the most non contraversal votes out there I would imagine. Her not voting is not an issue at all as this is the norm for the speaker of the house not just this speaker of the house.

I cannot understand how or why there wasn’t a unanimous vote against funding ACORN in both the House and the Senate.
Correction:
I understand that I don’t trust many of the Senators and House members. I understand that they are not as wise, well educated, or good or wise in their judgment as I would like, so, I actually CAN understand why they did not vote unanimously.
They do not have the same values, morals, mores, or point of view as I have, and I find often their judgment to be offensive.
Nevertheless, in a standard in which ACORN is clearly a corrupt organization it follows that all Federal Funds must, and should be cut off from them and they should be investigated.
The fact that something is as obvious as this makes it difficult for me to accept that the vote against ACORN is not unanimous.
If ACORN sued wouldn’t they be subject to full disclosure laws?
