Another pipeline closed off: House cuts ACORN funding, 345-75

By Michelle Malkin  •  September 17, 2009 02:44 PM

Better late than never:

The US House today joined the Senate in voting to defund ACORN, the community advocacy group beset by allegations of voter registration fraud and videotapes apparently showing employees advising conservative activists posing as a prostitute and pimp how to break the law.

The measure, offered as part of a motion on a student loan bill, passed by a vote of 345-75, according to the office of House Republican leader John Boehner.

The Senate voted earlier this week to withdraw housing and urban development funding. Last week, the Census Bureau severed ties with ACORN, which on Wednesday said it is suspending accepting new clients during an investigation.

But congressional Republicans are calling for all federal funds to be cut off and for a Justice Department investigation.

Just the beginning. Far from the end.

Since everything is about racism nowadays, I wonder how all the black people in the house voted on this?

There are about 40 black members of the house. I think JC Watts is the lone republican. Would the vote be 1 yes and 39 nos/not voting/absent?

I would be willing to bet that about 35 or more are in the no/not voting/absent category. Almost half the total nos.

If blacks vote in mass to keep funding a criminal enterprise would they be saying that it is ok to be a criminal as long as you are helping blacks?

Wouldn’t that not only be racist but also a big part of the black problem in America? Supporting bad behavior to achieve your goals is a really bad policy.

Wishful thinking, Chap. :-) …These scum are well-nailed by now.

I think you miss my point. All I am saying is that ACORN is in control of what cause of action they would bring and I have heard nothing to indicate they are considering a slander COE. And if it is slander, there is a difference between accusing the filmmakers of calling the entire organization corrupt and accusing them of manipulating the film footage.

If ACORN sued wouldn’t they be subject to full disclosure laws?

I don’t think they want FULL disclosure.

exactly…maybe some enterprising organization like Judicial Watch or USJF will do exactly that…which will allow them to get into the books…that is if they already haven’t been destroyed via data wiping and document shredding….

Diana Degette! Looks like it’s business as usual for my representative. Sadly, she’s a shoe-in…almost always running unopposed, at least by anyone who has more than any shot of winning. I was reading her website last week and saw that she’s not only campaigning for singer payer, but she has also apparently put forth a private bill that seems to grant legal status to family that…?…didn’t have legal immigration status before. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding exactly what legislation in proposed bills is trying to do, but I think that what was going on. Didn’t even know Reps had that power. Sigh.

I’d hate to have to put on my amateur lawyer suit again, but the other day I found a list of the states and their eavesdropping laws summarised for reporters. Most states actually allow recording if one of the parties agrees. A very few require both parties and Maryland is one. The Federal law only requires one party. Vermont has no law, eavesdrop at will!

Maryland’s law makes it a felony to record a conversation (“lets go kill all those people” – oops sorry, we have to prosecute you for recording the mass-murder plans) but only a misdemeanor to video people in restrooms, changing rooms or their bedrooms. Odd.

Of course the idiot Chappy chooses to ignore the fact that I have never weighed in with an opinion on whether the filmmaker did or did not break the Maryland law on recording conversations.

I do note that the state’s attorney only indicated that a law may have been broken. I fully expect the leftists in Maryland to use the organs of the state to persecute conservatives who dare expose leftist thugs for what they are.

Chappy just loves to ignore facts and tries to project an image of Atticus Finch or Perry Mason he is more like Holden Caulfield without the sympathetic character traits. In the end, he is a poor ambulance chasing lefty lawyer who leeches good wine off his rich friends.

It seems very strange that the Speaker of the House would not be listed at all!

As I said, it is actually very common because the Speaker traditionally doesn’t vote at all unless his/her vote could be decisive.

Then she would be listed as present and not voting, but there is no mention of her anywhere on the vote count.

So if you don’t have any opinion of whether or not they are ACTUALLY guilty (which, let’s face it you don’t, because you know as much about the law as you do about Barbera d’Asti) why would you say a MD DA would be an “idiot” for prosecuting it?

Chappy just loves to ignore facts and tries to project an image of Atticus Finch or Perry Mason he is more like Holden Caulfield without the sympathetic character traits.

Wow. Someone knows how to google “big important sounding literary references”! Good job! Maybe someday, after you work your way through “Everybody Poops” you’ll get around to actually reading them! Now go google Maryland’s law on conspiracy and tell me why ACORN is guilty of it. You know…like you claimed before I stepped in and schooled you (yet again)? Remember when you said Maryland’s law was very different, yet refused to say how, or give a citation?

In the end, he is a poor ambulance chasing lefty lawyer who leeches good wine off his rich friends.

I will admit, having people that will hang out and talk to you without having to give them a credit card number does have its advantages.

Interestingly enough, San Fran Nan didn’t vote to defund ACORN but she did vote to rebuke Joe Wilson.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said last week that the House should “talk about health care, not Mr. Wilson.” But she still supported members of her party who insisted on a formal rebuke and cast a rare vote Tuesday, in favor of the resolution. The House speaker usually does not vote.

I heard this story on the radio this afternoon while driving on the Northern State Parkway in Nassau County, NY. I saw a bumper sticker on a Ford Crown Vic that said “Pete King for Congress”. I looked at the license plate and it said “US Congress”. I passed the car slowly (traffic jam) and it was Pete King himself. This was at about 5:15 PM EDT. I guess Mr. King was not in DC for the ACORN vote. Absentee ballot? Who knows the rules? Anyone out there?

DUH!!! Shuttle flight from DC….what was I thinking?

La Repubblica and La Stampa reported that the new trend is to bathe in Italian red wine. Angelina Jolie in fact seems convinced of the virtues of the grape, cosmetic, preferring for this strange activity exclusive Montesodi, with some digression to the Barbera d’Asti.”

What’s interesting is that the filmmakers are being investigated over charges that pale in comparison to the ones that came about as a result of their own investigation.

If ACORN thinks they can be saved by this statute, they have a huge problem in that (1)law enforcement routinely gets a pass on the same thing (O’Keefe basically did what could and should have already been done by law enforcement), and (2)O’Keefe is more than happy to go to jail should a judge find him guilty … which happens to be the whole point of civil disobedience. You accept the punishment for what you did right that happened to be illegal. It worked for Rosa Parks, and it will work for O’Keefe. Look for O’Keefe to benefit BIG in the long run, despite whatever may befall in any lawsuit.

In either case, ACORN is screwed, and if Mr. Obama winds up somehow being implicated (which I am not saying will or will not happen), so is he.
